Retired pilot Pete Rock still travels a lot, sometimes on the ground and sometimes in the air. "I have a small airplane and we fly all over the east and southeast in that," said Rock. Rock has a concealed weapons permit from Florida and carries a gun with him whenever he travels. He says that it keeps himself and his family safer. But because every state has different gun laws, legally traveling with a firearm can be a hassle when you cross state lines.
The way the system currently works is that if you have a Florida concealed weapons permit and you want to travel with a firearm then you can only travel to other states that recognize Floridas permit. That's why Florida Congressman Cliff Stearns of Ocala (R-FL-06) is backing house resolution 822 otherwise known as The National Right to Carry Reciprocity Act. The bill would force states to recognize concealed weapons permits from other states.
In a statement released this week Stearn says: "An individual's license to drive is valid in other states, and my bill would apply that principle to concealed carry permits."
Rich Nascak with Florida Carry Incorporated says this type of legislation is long over due. "I think its an absolute necessity, it has to be done. It's ludicrous to have a system where something is a felony in one state is perfectly lawful in another state," said Nascak
And Rock says it would make life a lot easier for him. "I think its a great idea, i think the 2nd ammendment should apply in all 50 states," said Rock. The resolution needs to pass a vote in the House then it will move on to the Senate.
It just makes sense.
Which is exactly why it will go no where.
Since Vermont considers my right to carry to be absolute and I need no permit, would this proposed law protect me while traveling?
Since so many states now have “right to carry” laws I would think that these states at least would honor permits by other states. It wouldn’t help much in NY or places like that but you’d be good in most states.
As I read the law, it would not do so, because you do not have a state issued permit. A previous version of the law would have done so.
2) Since so many states now have right to carry laws I would think that these states at least would honor permits by other states. And you would be right. But there's no reason to just "think that" if you're going to discuss the matter. The National Rifle Association (www.nra.org) among others gives good information about which states honor which other states' concealed weapon permits.
3) It wouldnt help much in NY or places like that but youd be good in most states. Pro-criminal states like NY, MD, IL don't recognize other states' concealed weapon permits. Every state that has "shall issue" permitting recognizes at least some other states' permits, often by mutual agreement. Again, look it up.
4) To drive a car on a public road is not a right protected by the Constitution. To bear arms IS such a right. That's the only reason I would tolerate the feds getting involved in the matter.
In a statement released this week Stearn says: “An individual’s license to drive is valid in other states, and my bill would apply that principle to concealed carry permits.”
So it applys the principal that you have to have a license to exercise a Constitutional right? A license which can be revoked on a whim in many jurisdictions.
So it passes and you decide to carry concealed in New York or Chicago, and survive a stop by the police.
What are the chances you’ll end up charged with some crime which will result in loss of your right to possess a firearm let alone carry it concealed.
The intent is good, but I dont think this law will work in practice.
I generally hate the Federal Government and it’s unrelenting gaggle of useless laws, but since this is a Second Amendment issue, it seems to me that the Congress should pass a law that guns and the carrying of same is a Federal issue and the states can have no jurisdiction (just as now most states have “preempted” local governments from passing gun control laws). But then we have so many “limp dick” Republicans in Congress, it will never happen.
So it applys the principal that you have to have a license to exercise a Constitutional right?
I’d rather the federal govt stayed the heck out of it, other than the abolish the ATF and most other federal gun laws.
Its a Constitutionally protected right. Any laws necessary are a state issue except where states infringe on the right.
My copy of the Constitution must be a misprint. Nowhere in the Second Amendment does it require a permit to keep and bear arms.
The real kicker to that law is that someone who lives in NJ can’t carry in NJ(NJ is a won’t issue state) but could carry in NY on a Florida license. Anyone in the country with a valid CCW can carry in the “won’t issue” states except the residents!
>>It just makes sense.<<
It just makes no sense that we should have to ask an inferior politician to carry concealed? I understand that idea perhaps if somewhere in your past you had a criminal record. I find it offensive that I am considered likely to commit a crime and must register myself simply because I am carrying a concealed firearm for self defensive reasons.
You would prefer the Feds who have continued to pay our annual dues to the United Nations to have the authority over whether or not you or I can carry a firearm? These are the same feds that love Agenda 21.
Do you normally post on FR when you are drunk or high or whatever is that has collapsed you ability to reason?
I can't even take a pistol into NY legally to target shoot at a range 5 miles over the border.
If you re-read my message, you'll note that I said "The kicker to that law"
Under the proposed law, I would be able to legally carry in NY with my FL license.
I am well versed with the gun laws in NJ and to a somewhat lesser degree, NY, and I know how strict the laws are in NY and even worse in NYC.
My apologies, you are correct.
On the other hand, you currently can carry into PA with your FL license. Heck, you can be a PA resident without a PA license to carry and carry legally with your FL license.
You can get a FL CCW for $117. It’s a 7 year permit.

Thanks, that could be really handy.
