Perry tells NH no to border fence

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry says he opposes a fence along the U.S. border with Mexico.

Speaking to hundreds of New Hampshire voters at a private reception Saturday afternoon, the Texas governor says a fence would be ineffective and take too long to build.

The comments, which produced one angry shout, expose a rift with some conservative voters over Perry's immigration record. Tea party activists in Texas have been particularly upset by his steady opposition to the fence. He also signed a law giving illegal immigrants in-state tuition for Texas universities.

What about tunnels? Israel has a wall, but there are tunnels.

We need land mines and troops. And mostly, a government that says, “If you come here illegally, you will be stripped of assets and deported with a criminal record. You will never be allowed here again. Any employer that hires you will be fined/penalized.”

A fence may work well in some places, but the California border (and Arizona and New Mexico borders, for that matter) don’t have the Big Bend/Rio Grande separating them from Mexico.

Completely different situation from Texas.

He had his state file an Amicus brief supporting Arizona’s law, so you are quite incorrect.

He didn’t want the same law in Texas. You should get your attacks straight.

Now that's the kind of cognitive dissonance we've come to know and love from our government drones. IOW, that's talking out of both sides of his mouth.

“The fence is useless. We need land mines and/or troops on the border.”

I go for both. About 15 years ago I called a conservative talk show and said that we should just start shooting people who cross the border because we probably wouldn’t have to shoot more than a few hundred and the problem would be permanently fixed - and was howled off the radio in a rant. I say I was right then and I’m still right. CA probably wouldn’t be bankrupt today if they had taken steps decades ago. We are governed by sissies and our enemies know it, especially the ROP.

What? Canada’s not sympathetic to illegals?

What good does it do for a state to pass laws to deal with illegals when the Obama Admin turns around and sues the state?

It would be impossible to build a fence the length of the border between TX & Mexico.

What the anti-Perry people don’t tell you is the rest of the story, that Perry wants “boots on the ground”, National Guard troops on the border, because that is more effective than a fence.

I like Perry just fine and have defended him often, but I just disagree with him here and he seems a little weak to me when it comes to securing the border.

There is no reason we can't build a border fence. The only thing really stopping it is bogus law suits and a complete lack of will.

Great, he's for boots on the ground, but I am suspicious that anyone who doesn't want a fence won't be serious about the boots on the ground piece either when it comes time to walk the walk.

The anti-Perry folks spit out a lot of stuff that doesn't concern me. His flubs over Gardasil and the TTC don't bother me too much, but being weak on securing the border does.

If we had the will securing the border would not be very difficult and everyone in the world knows it. Build the fence, put large numbers of National Guard on the border, and train up 25,000 more border police. Problem solved. We need all of the above.

This is coming from someone that likes Perry and defends him constantly. He needs to assure people like me that the status quo on the border will change.

Bush also put “boots on the ground” he just didn’t allow them to have ammo and they had a standing order to retreat if confronted.

There is a river except where there is a lake.

Neither a wall or a fence is feasible in Texas. Either is a stupid suggestion. I mean lame brained, ridiculous, idiotic.

The solution is ruthless capture of hundreds or even thousands of illegal border crossers. Rather than kissing their asses, harsh and long remembered incarceration of men, women and children will solve the problem and be more reliable and a lot cheaper.

Mortal fear is the only solution

The ignorance of Texas geography on this thread is astonishing, since it is essentially a thread about Texas geography.

People just running their mouths (or keyboards) without knowing the facts.

“They OWN property on the other side”

Oh really?
And just how does that work, since Americans can only LEASE, but not OWN land in Mexico?

The few yards of border’s edge land required for the fence construction might be the first legitimate use of eminent domain in decades.

me too. I think it’s a great idea. I don’t know why we havent used them in Af/Pak. Mine the entire border where the Taliban goes in and out.

I can’t imagine it would be too popular politically, though.

Not only that but it does not at all address the tens of millions already in the country, or the reason we have them here.

Those numbers appear WAY too low, I suppose that is just the invaders from Mex. & So. America?

Needs to add the invaders from the rest of the world too in order to be accurate.
