Perry dominates in South Carolina (PPP Poll has Perry up by 23 pts.)
Public Policy Polling ^ | 8/30/11 | PPP

Posted on 08/30/2011 9:43:21 AM PDT by CA Conservative

Raleigh, N.C. – If there was any question that Rick Perry is the new Republican presidential frontrunner before now, PPP’s latest poll of South Carolina confirms it. A week ago, PPP showed Perry jumping to a narrow lead in first-caucus Iowa. Now, he has a double-digit lead in what will likely be the third-voting state. Perry tops with 36% to Mitt Romney’s 16%, Michele Bachmann’s 13%, Herman Cain’s 9%, Newt Gingrich’s 8%, Ron Paul’s 5%, Rick Santorum’s 4%, and Jon Huntsman’s 2%. This is a sea change from when PPP last polled the race in June, with Perry not included. Romney led with 30% to Cain’s and Gingrich’s 15%, Bachmann’s 13%, and Paul’s 10%.

If Sarah Palin joins the fray, it has no impact on Perry’s dominance but a lot on Bachmann’s standing. Palin would place third at 10% behind Perry still at 36%, Romney at 13%, followed by Cain’s 9%, and Bachmann and Gingrich tied at 7%.

Topinka? Again?" I am so glad I left Illinois. One of the 5 best decisions of my 63-year-old life!

Illinois is THEE political cesspool of America. Have fun with those taxes (my state and local tax burden dropped by over half when I moved to Colorado----and I have a way better house, Rocky Mountain view in a great neighborhood).

Like I said, please enjoy Pat's Quinntaxentials.

Where was Michelle “targeted”? She is favorably viewed on FR if that is the “here” you reference.

In many respects I feel for you non-Chicago Illinoisan. I don’t see your state getting an honest goverment primarily because of a Federal Usurpation destroying your republican system.

Your problem is the Dictatorship in-acted by the Federal injustice system in 1964, and their dictatorial edict Reynolds v. Sims.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reynolds_v._Sims

It is because of that Edict that Chicago is able to run your State for their own exclusive benefit at the expense of everyone else.

Kirk was preferable to adding to the Democrats power here.
Simple stuff.

No. I don't trust Romney.

But I trust McCain less.

The only reason I supported the ticket with him on it was because he chose Palin. I obviously would have voted for him regardless (I care enough about the country not to have wittingly voted for Obama by staying at home), but I did then and will always trust him less than I trust Romney. He's never done anything but be contrary (to conservative principles) to get his name in the news.

btw, no one tells me what to think. I do that entirely for myself, and I resist groupthink at all times in all places........including FR.

Not all this is directed at you, and I think you'll know that when the time comes.

Sounds like you have a good Conservative for a daughter, no reflection on Perry intended here, because I don't say that with regard to her opinion of him, but rather because you trust her judgment.
I don't know what her concerns are with him, so I don't want to capitalize off thoughts I'm not privy to.  I will say that it sounds like you have already been blessed since you trust her, and I salute you for it.  Good job.

As for policy statements, they concern me.  I've watched too many folks come up with great comments, after spending decades doing the opposite of what they now advocate.  As for explaining away things they have done, it impresses me a lot more when they don't need to.  I'm not going to categorize what you read, because I have appreciated an awful lot of your post on the forum, and I don't want to cast dispersions when they probably aren't warranted at all.  Besides, you didn't draft them.

As for Perry being a clone of Bush, that's a statement that express an overall vision, that can't be explained more accurately with as much ease.  When it came to Bush, there were things that he had done, that told me he wasn't a Conservative at his core.  Does that mean he was an evil man trying to destroy this nation?  No.  Neither is Perry.  None the less, people who are Conservatives at their core won't be fooled as often as people who need to ask what the right thing to do is.  That's not to say that Conservatives shouldn't listen to voices advocating alternative actions, but they need to come down on the right side at the end of the day.  If you're not a Conservative, you're not going to have the right yard stick to measure the true worth and implications of legislation, or an executive decision.

Did the dangers of a man not being a Conservative at his core materialize during the Bush administration?  I believe they did.  Others aren't willing to buy into that.

Over time we have come to this conclusion about Romney, and I think it is a sound one.  Despite major spin, we saw through it and over time came to the conclusion he was unfit to represent us.  Today we have a guy before us that most of us didn't know much about at all several weeks ago, and he's already not only being touted as the winner of the primaries and caucuses, but he's being touted as the next president.  Three weeks ago he was a bight shinny new bobble.  Now he's the next president?  This is an exact repeat of the last Texan pushed off on us.

There has been no public vetting of this guy on the grand expansive landscape.  Texans tell us he's swell, and we're supposed to fall in line.  Not just no, but hell no!  I'm not buying this routine this time around.  These tactics are designed to ram this guy through before anyone really knows who he is.  Is that what Conservatives consider a reasoned process?  Of course not.  That he would actually try to get away with this, and his supporters would, reveals quite a bit to me.  What's the bum's rush all about anyway?

We've gone from hardly any talk of Perry, to he's our next president, shut up and accept it.  Uh, no thanks.  Not a chance...

I appreciate your comments.  You will come to a decision that is reasoned.  I hope we'll agree when you do.

I appreciate the sentiments expressed, and extend them back to you.

Take care BlackElk.

All the babies that were allowed to live during the 8 years of the Bush presidency don't think he was a "moderate". And since when do people who claim to be true conservatives spend their time denigrating great men and war heroes like Bob Dole?

He is not a moderate. He's a statesman. His life story is made up incredible bravery and generosity. And his voting record is solidly conservative.

None of the snarky, self-satisfied computer-bangers who mince around FR dismissing people who actually achieved something as RINOs, are worthy to carry either the Bush or Dole jock strap.

Do you realize this guy wasn’t even known to many of us until a few weeks ago, and now we’re being told to sit down, shut up, and vote for the guy when we get the opportunity?

You tell me if you would like me doing that to you.

When Pete Wilson ran from California, I refused to endorse him because he was a RINO. Now I note that people from other states think it’s a sound idea to promote their guy so forcefully, that he overshadows people who are clearly more in line with Conservative views and values.

These are the people I should want to align myself with? Really?

You and I have no beef, but I will tell you that I am not impressed at all with these machine tactics, something akin to a union demanding certain actions out of their members.

Perry didn’t bother to declare until the 13th, and now the process is supposed to be over? That’s how Perry folks think it works?

This is defiantly true, Romney, unlike McCain at least has a good excuse for his liberal actions in Massachusetts.

McCain not only sold out conservative and Constitutional principle’s he actively worked with democrats to undercut them.

There is no comparison between Romney and McCain. McCain didn’t even have a liberal constituency to appease, McCain like Lindsey Graham came from conservative political base, which they abandoned to side with the liberals.

I gotta go with Monorprise here, Lakeshark, my FRiend.

McCain actively and repeatedly has worked with Democrats to undercut conservatives.

He loses hands down, IMO.

I’m a little confused. On the forum some folks have touted a $6 billion dollar emergency fund. I more or less figured that was a surplus?

Is Texas in a deficit situation now?

If so, I can see the consternation on that point. Hopefully for the people of Texas, they have a very small deficit, if at all.

How did you get the idea that I believe the country was pining for a conservative in 2000? It wasn’t, Bush was as conservative as could have been elected and, as you note, barely was. And the truth is had the RATS thrown out the lying weasel Clinton and run Gore as an incumbent Bush would have lost the election.

After 911 just about everything Bush did was to increase his abilities to fight the wars which we had to fight. He tried to bribe his domestic enemies. My only major criticism of Bush is he did not fight the RAT media and allowed himself to be attacked unjustly by it. This poisoned the peoples’ minds which is easy enough to do.

And “no” the so called announcement of a war chest did not stop anyone from running. It did announce that he would be a formidable force who had done his preparation to run a winning campaign. Just as Perry made sure he had the financial backing to run a real campaign rather than a slapdash, ad hoc one.

You are going to compare RR’s political history with Bachmann or Cain? Seriously? Where did I miss a lifetime in politics for either? Was either the president of a major union? Was either a two term governor of the most populous state in the Union? Or a former candidate? Only in the parallel universe not this one.

Cain (or anyone with political ambitions) might receive some consideration if he wins a political office somewhere. Unless that happens he goes nowhere. Michelle must win a statewide office to get much consideration. These seem to be the rules which must be followed to become president. Unless either decides to become a victorious general.

Another thing about Reagan is that he was a welcome presence in American homes for more than three decades as the host of popular tv shows. We grew up with Reagan as a familiar and kindly grandfather figure hardly a threat nor a political figure at all. This made it impossible for the RATmedia to easily demonize him and was why he was called the “Teflon” President since the slime did not stick. There is NO similar politician in our history. Without that mastery of the media and ability to thwart it Reagan probably would never have been elected. It would have Goldwatered him.

There were folks running around here criticizing her for things she didn’t even do, saying they couldn’t support her any longer because of it.

It lasted for about a week. It was sophomoric. None the less there were folks swooping in to say her campaign was over, they agreed with the detractors.

PPP is telling you what you want to hear and you're the one buying it.

As a person Cain is terrific. But it takes a politician to win political office and that he is not. The American people are not going to elect non-politicians to the top office in the land since there is no record of achievement politically to justify that.

Reagan cannot be compared to ANY of these people particularly non-politicians. He had been politically involved and active for decades before running for president. As you know becoming a union president is as political as you can get. Developing the skills of vote getting is critical.
