Perry dominates in South Carolina (PPP Poll has Perry up by 23 pts.)
Public Policy Polling ^ | 8/30/11 | PPP

Raleigh, N.C. – If there was any question that Rick Perry is the new Republican presidential frontrunner before now, PPP’s latest poll of South Carolina confirms it. A week ago, PPP showed Perry jumping to a narrow lead in first-caucus Iowa. Now, he has a double-digit lead in what will likely be the third-voting state. Perry tops with 36% to Mitt Romney’s 16%, Michele Bachmann’s 13%, Herman Cain’s 9%, Newt Gingrich’s 8%, Ron Paul’s 5%, Rick Santorum’s 4%, and Jon Huntsman’s 2%. This is a sea change from when PPP last polled the race in June, with Perry not included. Romney led with 30% to Cain’s and Gingrich’s 15%, Bachmann’s 13%, and Paul’s 10%.

If Sarah Palin joins the fray, it has no impact on Perry’s dominance but a lot on Bachmann’s standing. Palin would place third at 10% behind Perry still at 36%, Romney at 13%, followed by Cain’s 9%, and Bachmann and Gingrich tied at 7%.

My support for Perry grows every day as he is out there taking the brunt of the MSM smears. There is a full fontal assault of Perry, particularly in regard to his Christian Family Values. Palin has not, to my knowledge come to the defense of either Bachmann or Perry on these attacks.

As a result of this, my support for Palin is wavering. In light of the fact that the MSM in in total smear mode, Palin needs to either poop or get off the pot. If she doesn’t announce by this weekend, then I’m going all in for Perry.

“Don’t forget folks, he’s not a RINO even if his people are perfectly comfortable tapping Democrat polls to support him.”

Do you have any other polls that show someone else leading?

It doesn’t occur to you at all, that a Democrat poll could be gamed to support the candidate the Left might desire?

Really? Wow...

Folks, this has long since crossed the line of sane support for a candidate.

We’re now even encouraging Conservative candidates to pull out so Perry can run unopposed.

It’s flat out embarrassing to watch you folks stoop to this.

Rhetorical question...but why would anybody south of the Mason/Dixon line even considering voting for Mitt Romney? He just oozes that city-slicker Yankee elitist that most Southerners detest.

A close first or second in Iowa, a close second in New Hampshire followed by a large victory in South Carolina and Perry will damned near run the table.

note: the only unknown is what happens if Palin gets in the race.

So what you are saying is that who does the poll is more important than the polls accuracy?

Ironically, PPP polls, despite their origin, are one of the more accurate polls out there. And IIRC, to the extent they had a bias, it was actually towards Republican candidates last year.

I just had a thought that Jon Huntsman will become a 3rd party candidate and be the "John Anderson" of 2012. Anderson was a liberal Republican, just like Huntsman, who ran in the 1980 campaign as an independent.

From Wikipedia:

Most of Anderson's original support came from Rockefeller Republicans who were more liberal than Reagan, but it bled away. Many prominent intellectuals, including the author and activist Gore Vidal, All in the Family creator Norman Lear, and the editors of the liberal magazine The New Republic, also endorsed the Anderson campaign. He also had the support of many independents. Cartoonist Garry Trudeau's Doonesbury ran several strips sympathetic to the Anderson campaign.[9] According to the recently published journals of Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis voted for Anderson, as did Schlesinger himself. The hope that Anderson would score when the Democrats split in their support of Ted Kennedy and President Jimmy Carter faded when Kennedy endorsed Carter and the Democrats held together. Anderson's choice of little-known Democrat Patrick Joseph Lucey, a former Governor of Wisconsin, as his running mate signaled that Anderson was unable to win over any prominent Democrat. Although the Carter campaign feared Anderson could be a spoiler, Anderson's campaign turned out to be "simply another option for frustrated voters who had already decided not to back Carter for another term. Polls found Anderson voters nearly as likely to list Reagan as their second choice as Carter."[7]

That is the most important thing about this poll, Palin entry would have zero affect on Perry

Oh, we're sure that it *could* happen, I suppose. But you have yet to show that it actually *is* happening. That's the point. Until you can do that, you're nothing but just another whining little Palin supporter who can't stand it that somebody besides Palin is grabbing the limelight and the momentum, and who has to spin weird little conspiracy theories to account for the fact that reality is not meshing with your own personal little self-contained fact space.

And I'm telling you this as someone who's still holding out for DeMint to change his mind - i.e. neither a Perry nor a Palin supporter.

I only wish we had had a RINO like Perry at the helm for the last two and one half years instead of what we have now!

15000 Dow, 5% economic growth, unemployment 6% and falling fast! Borders secured! Iran nuclear weapons program dead in the water! On and on and on! DAMN what a mess that would be!

In fact, supporting any candidate BUT Palin is proof of Palin-hatred.

If you have any polls that would indicate a different trend, please enlighten us. But just complaining because you don't like or disagree with the outcome of a poll is not a compelling argument.

Look folks, this is a Democrat poll. Now we’re even comfortable with using that poll to game our selection process. Does that not cause shame for any of you? Seriously?

What the hell is wrong with you Perry people? This guy is not Conservative.

If this were April of 2012, and despite our best efforts Perry had run away with the nomination despite our best efforts to get Bachmann or Cain selected, I could see some sanity in what you’re doing.

The problem is, this is August of 2011. Right now we’re trying to get Conservative candidates to pull out, so Perry can run away with the nomination.

What is Conservative about that?

We are betraying what we said was our core beliefs. How can you folks do that with good conscience?

Well, Florida has been infested by a bunch of Yankees who have moved there to retire, so Mittens may do well there. Of course, if Florida doesn't move their primary back, they will lose half of their delegates, so even a Romney win there won't help him a whole lot.
