Approximately 65 million people are likely to be directly impacted by Hurricane Irene as the storm takes aim at the densely populated Eastern Seaboard. Evacuations are underway for high flood risk areas.
Mass transit cancellations, schedule changes and road/bridge closures are occurring throughout the storm warning areas. Please check with local news and Emergency Management Operations to determine the recommendations for your immediate area.

Probably from Roanoke Rapids, NC. “Honey, me and Skillet are gonna drive around and see what’s open. We’ll pick up some Bar-B-Q for dinner.”
Never heard it called a phone on a leash. :)
Last storm we had, the landline was the online thing that was worked through the storm, no cable, no power, and no cell phones.
And fill all your plastic ‘tupperware’ containers with water to freeze them into really big icecubes, and you won’t have to go to Timonium and stand in line for a bag of ice like so many people did the last time we lost power for an extended period.
Thanks!
Let us know when you’re back home & safe/sound !
Ha ha...Skillet, LOL!
Good point. We might need that ice.
Yup! A monster truck should be able to handle about anything a hurricane could throw at it.
Same thing here near Sandy Hook. We are inland - nothing but light rain. No one here seems to be panicking much.
I have never heard the Weather Channel and the local media report so much about what the President is doing. Again on TWC “Obama is paying close attention to this, potentially historic event he just signed an emergency declaration for RI.”
The weather is now political fodder, what needs to be looked at is how well the state governors handled their individual states, because the White House has very little to do with the response but the media need badly to paint Obama in a good light and they will use the misery of others to do their bidding.
We got email yesterday from our church about no services, youth group or confirmation classes tomorrow.
Our Church sits up on a rise on a corner, right across the road from a Chesapeake Bay tributary and the intersection floods everytime a rain coincides with a high tide. A new moon high tide along with the winds and rains is going to make that intersection part of the nearby marsh.
Good luck to y’all.
That would be the NBC Obama Sycophant Weather Channel. Gotta keep Obama looking good for 2012. Geez, Big Sis gave a pep talk a little while ago.
We had a generator that pulled the well pump, used it for maybe a couple of years until we got electricity. But we sold it recently because we’d rather have a non-gasoline method for long term disruptions. But IMO large tanks is the way to go if one has no other method, such as a shallow well, artesian spring, lake nearby etc. Some windy areas can use windmills to draw water up.
Every governor and government entity on the east coast is either suggesting or mandating evacuation of manufactured homes in flood planes zones. It’s pretty much SOP.
You got it!!
Obama’s crew have declared emergency areas before the storm even left the Bahamas. They are doing everything humanly possible, propaganda-wise, to make him smell like a rose.
If Bush had done that in 2005, the media and the Left would have screamed bloody murder. Nauti-nurse and anyone who followed the Katrina live threads knows that it was Clinton’s former head of FEMA who advised Gov Blanco not to request Federal participation for one very bad extra day. And that was done specifically so that President Bush could not be seen to be “in charge.”
We are hunkered down. Mainly concerned about no backup power for sump pump — which usually only runs when the dehumidifier fills it up.
Sorry so late... took a quick nap! I have two answers about wind speed:
1. With altitude, wind speeds will increase naturally as there is less air to move around. It’s not gonna be that significant, however, at altitudes that matter to most of us.
2. In the bigger cities, there may be a slightly different concern: the wind tunnel effect. When you push a lot of wind at a wall (or building), its still gotta go someplace, so it runs around the buildings and down the streets with a higher velocity. So anything loose will be thrown around violently.
I don’t expect there would be any danger of buildings getting knocked over or anything like that.
I’m mainly worried that one of the large old trees in my yard will come down.
