Shep just said they had to inspect all the subway lines before resuming service. That makes sense, but he added that it could only be done during the day. Any particular reason for that?

(other than the obvious that no one wants to work on the weekend)

Glen Ridge,NE NJ-12 miles west of NYC.

Totally calm.No rain,no wind. Is this the “center” of the storm, or has the bottom faded away?

I can hear the brook,in some woods, but can’t see it.not a concern to us, tho.

The rain is picking up again, and a bit of wind. Our power is out and Public Service says they estimate a week till restored.@#+?#*!

But am counting our blessings!

I have no idea...the subway system goes out to the burroughs and is not all underground. They’ll have to check Metro North, the LI Railroad and Amtrak, too. Daylight perhaps?

Discussion and 48-hour outlook

at 1100 am EDT...1500 UTC...the center of Tropical Storm Irene was
located near latitude 41.4 north...longitude 73.7 west. Irene is
moving toward the north-northeast near 26 mph...43 km/h...and this
motion with a little faster forward speed is expected over the next
day or so. On the forecast track...the center of Irene will move
over northern New England later today and over eastern Canada
tonight.

Maximum sustained winds are near 60 mph...95 km/h...with higher
gusts. Irene is forecast to weaken and become a Post-tropical
cyclone by tonight.

Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 320 miles...520 km
from the center. A weatherflow station on Fire Island recently
reported sustained winds of 50 mph...80 km/h...with a gust to 63
mph...101 km/h.

Estimated minimum central pressure is 966 mb...28.53 inches.
Central Park in New York City reported 966.5 mb...28.54 as the
center passed this morning.

Hazards affecting land

storm surge...an extremely dangerous storm surge will raise water
levels by as much as 4 to 8 feet above ground level from western
portions of Long Island island sound eastward along the southern
coasts of Connecticut...Rhode Island...and Massachusetts. The
highest surges will occur near the upper parts of bays and inlets.
Near the coast...the surge will be accompanied by large...
destructive...and life-threatening waves. Higher than normal
astronomical tides are occurring this weekend. Coastal and river
flooding will be highest in areas where the peak surge occurs
around the time of high tide. Storm tide and surge values are very
location-specific...and users are urged to consult products issued
by their local National Weather Service offices. Water levels
along the New Jersey and Delaware coast including Delaware Bay will
subside today.

Rainfall...Irene is expected to produce total rainfall accumulations
of 4 to 8 inches...with isolated maximum amounts of 12 inches...
from northeastern Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey northward
into New York state and interior New England. These rains...
combined with heavy rains over the past few weeks...could
cause widespread flooding...life-threatening flash floods...and
significant uprooting of trees due to rain-softened grounds.

Wind...tropical storm force winds will spread northward into
northern New England and Atlantic Canada today. Winds affecting
the upper floors of high-rise buildings could be significantly
stronger than those near ground level.

Tornadoes...isolated tornadoes are possible over southern New
England this afternoon.

I’m in Huntington. I woke up this morning, I have everything but cell service!

Looks like a little flood came through from under my front door, but thats about it.

Sunny, but still breezy here on the Eastern Shore of VA. Chincoteague Causeway was reopened earlier and many of my friends who evacuated are already back assessing damage. Not that bad, all things considered.

surface and radar data indicate that the center of Irene is moving
just to the west of Connecticut. The forward motion has accelerated
to near 020/23...and some additional increase in forward speed is
expected as the storm moves on the east side of a broad
mid-tropospheric trough over eastern North America. The official
forecast is similar to...but slightly west of...the previous track.

Surface synoptic data suggest that the maximum winds have decreased
to 50 kt. Continued gradual weakening will occur as the system
moves over land today. In 12 hours...global models show Irene
becoming embedded within a baroclinic zone so the forecast shows
extratropical transition by that time.

Significantly stronger winds are still possible over high-rise
structures and areas of elevated terrain.

Delaware looks like it might flood Easton (again) and Bushkill (again again). Downtown Bethlehem & Allentown some flooding near the Lehigh. Highways are clear. Creeks are swollen.

Personal update from NE PA. Few tree limbs down, lots of twigs & leaves & whatnot. Fire/police have been great keeping watch overnight. A little water in my basement, some seeping up through cracks in the floor.

Thank God no reports of major damage or injuries. I think we can all collectively sigh with relief it wasn’t worse (and a prayer for thanksgiving).
