UPPER DARBY, Pa. - As police in Upper Darby, Pa., search for more young people involved in last week's flash mob, more adults are thinking about arming themselves with guns.
People are talking about how afraid they are of being caught in the path one of these flash mobs while they're out minding their own business, and they want to be ready.
Law enforcement officials say it's a nightmare in the making because ordinary, private citizens are getting gun permits.
"We have people now that are fearful and carrying guns because of children. How sad is that?" Upper Darby police Captain George Rhoades said.
He said it's all legal.
"It's all self-defense," Rhoades said.
He says about 10 to 20 applications are processed every week in Upper Darby.
Rhoades says with that many people "carrying" and the violent actions of these flash mobs, the worst is bound to happen.
"Now we have this mentality, 'I'm not going to retreat. I'm not going to call 9-1-1. I'm going to be a vigilante and take care of the problem myself,'" he said.
That means flash mob children could be dead, and the would-be victims may have the right, but Rhoades is appealing to everybody to think twice.

Let's see. I'm about to be beaten almost to death, I'm vastly outnumbered, I have the means and ability to defend myself. And he wants me to stop and reconsider?
I corrected myself in Post 51 — I thought the COPS were afraid to use lethal force.
For us, CCW and lethal force are probably our only hope to stay alive when these punks attack en masse.
So, I get the gist that in their opinion that it would be better for these mobs to be encouraged by doing what ever they please instead of people defending themselves?
How is it being a vigilante protecting your own life?
It does seem like these flash mob events are occurring primarily in liberal paradises that don’t permit concealed carry...
How sad, indeed, that decent citizens are arming themselves against savage low-lifes? Not so very.
“Law enforcement officials say it’s a nightmare in the making because ordinary, private citizens are getting gun permits.”
(gasp) How horrifying.
(sarcasm)
Dan, respectfully, I have dealt with the individuals that make up those mobs most of my adult life. I have been in their lives, homes, minds, dealt with near riots, and can’t count how many times I have had to point my duty weapon at one or more of them to get them to cease whatever felonious activity they were involved in. I am trying to impart a little of my experience here to temper the bravado a bit. I know their culture and I am telling anyone that will listen, that if you do use force against them, it is their culture to respond in kind and if you aren’t available, someone that resembles you may do in a pinch.
I am not saying don’t defend yourself, I am only asking others to be cognizant that you are dealing with a culture where violence is the norm, not the random interruption of their lives; where life is extremely cheap and to many, their life, your life, anyone’s life is worthless.
The second most dangerous person in society is a motivated man with weapon. The first is motivated man with weapon who already considers himself dead.
yea but they dont quite get the message across,,,,,,,Sorry
I am old enough that I view any attack on me as attempted murder and I will shoot you dead at the first provocation.
I'm willing to let a jury can sort it out.
Good Lord! I hope this is true. If it is true, then there may be enough spirit left to create a slight possibility of stemming the long slide into the abyss.
When I was young, looters were shot on sight.

Sorry “combat” but you must be ‘older than dirt’.
Since the mid 60’s the rule of thumb has been to let the rioters have their way then during the Rodney BS they were really allowed to run rampant.
As to walking the streets at night, when I was stationed at New London CT in 1962, used to go to NYC for weekend and had no problem walking the streets at night (of course during the pre VN ‘summers of love’, being in uniform was a plus and quarters seldom cost) but for the hour or so the bars were closed etc it was just walking around time.
And during the days of $200.00 +- per month, Park Avenue wasn’t exactly on the ‘tour’.
Once the load of double oo hits you, you, you don’t have to worry about collecting social security.
With this clown in charge, it’s no wonder the thugs feel free to attack innocent people and steal from shopkeepers.
“Children” ... disenfranchised youths, LOL! Newspeak.
Almost as sad as having you appointed/promoted to "protect" the people of Upper Darby.
You can bet your ass they are. You can also safely bet the farm on that they have told the participants that they do not have to worry about the cops messing with them.
Do I even need to say what a richard head the cop is.I dont think you will see this crap in Georgia because we have been armed to the teeth for years.
“In the 60s, riots on campus got worse and worse until the shootings at Kent State.”
And sometimes, ROTC cadets had to fix bayonets to keep the rioters away from, let’s call it, ‘stuff.’
True story.
Egged on by the likes of Maxine Waters, Holder, Obama et all. They and other liberals want it like Britain, where you dast not resist, and if you do, you becone the criminal.
