RENE, S.D. When the nearly 300 students of the Irene-Wakonda School District returned to school this week, they found a lot of old friends, teachers and familiar routines awaiting them. But one thing was missing: Friday classes.
This district in the rolling farmland of southeastern South Dakota is among the latest to adopt a four-day school week as the best option for reducing costs and dealing with state budget cuts to education.

why dont we all go to a 4 day work week?
I would have loved a four day school week when I was in high school.
TwoHarbors Minnesota did the same last year after yet another school referendum got pounded at the polls. They lengthened the school days and everything worked out fine. The teachers thought it was a threat. LOL
You know where this is heading.....The government will teach the masses via the internet...
I find it interesting that FOX report that SD ranks 44th in spending per pupil but they don’t mention what they rank academically(SAT, ACT etc)Nationally... I bet it is in the top 20.
Teachers and administrators are getting four-day workweeks without any reductions in salaries or benefits. The socialist states are claiming big future savings on electricity and the like by cutting Fridays.
This will never fly. Far too many families use school as daycare for the kids, with both parents working during the day.
Well we’ve seen the recent $9.95/month high speed internet offering for school lunch eligible families.
Of course it only connects to whitehouse.gov, moveon.org, seiu.com, and democraticunderground.
The schools will still have to feed the children, breakfast, lunch and after school snacks on Friday?
Irene, SD is near my home town and is one of several small school districts in the county. There is a need to consolidate these small districts as there are not enough students or a population base to support this district. Sadly school consolidation has been fought in South Dakota for decades. Iowa was very successful in school consolidation and to avoid the controversy about what community would have the school, new consolidated schools were built literally in cornfields in a central location.
Online school already exists, K-12. They have tried to get homeschoolers to use it.
If it ever becomes popular with the students in PS wonder how they will answer the questions about socialization? LOL
Parents who don’t work use the schools as a babysitter, too...and a free cafeteria for breakfast, lunch and an “after school” sitter as well, where the kids are entertained and fed their last meal of the day. The only part the parents could manage was conception.

Sounds good, would have had at least 1 more job, maybe 2, dependent on how they handled the sports schedule.
I already do. Ten hour days. Saves some overhead. And I get a 3 day weekend every week.
And more to the thread topic. Just get those kids an iPad doohickey thingofamabob each and send them home. They'll do just fine. Educamate their ownsomes. Should save tons.
As long as they are getting the same amount of hours of study I see no problem with this. The actual study time of a school day is less than 7 hours if they dived this by 4 and added the extra to each day much money could be saved.
I personally think that is a great idea. One teacher for thousands of students could mean really good teachers could be employed for each subject. With cameras being common these days participation could be much the same by employing one aid per X number of students.
Well IMHO that is too bad because the majority in most school districts no longer have or don;t have kids at all and would love not having to pay additional taxes so someone could have daycare for their kids....
Anyone who thinks this is a good idea is sadly mistaken. This is just to cut costs so as not to have to make changes to teacher contracts. In my school districts, the teachers’ union demanded more half days of school, supposedly for teacher prep, but few of the teachers use the time that way. They now have several half days per month. I don’t know exactly how many.
Dropping one school day a week? I agree that it is not a good idea. They forgot to cancel the other 4 days of government school indoctrination.
