This is typical Perry. Talks tough before elections (hence the current sanctuary city blathering) but once he’s safely in office it’s a quick backslide into liberalism. He’s a hold your finger up to see which way the wind is blowing that day kind of politician. After nearly 30 years in politics, he’s got it down good.

i don’t mind an open border either.
as long as there are no benefits at taxpayer expense.
if a military man applies to bring a foreign wife here,
he has to show he can support her,
and swear she won’t be a burden on the state.
i want one set of rules, in both cases.

Perry will be the Republican nominee. Obama and the dems will define him as another GWB.

"We must say to every Texas child learning in a Texas classroom, "We dont care where you come from, but where you are going, and we are going to do everything we can to help you get there." And that vision must include the children of undocumented workers. Thats why Texas took the national lead in allowing such deserving young minds to attend a Texas college at a resident rate. Those young minds are a part of a new generation of leaders[;] the doors of higher education must be open to them. The message is simple: educacion es el futuro, y si se puede [education is the future, and yes, we can]."
Nice of him to use the ACORN/SEIU slogan on the end there.

"An open border means ....we have addressed pollution concerns, made substantial progress in stopping the spread of disease, and rid our crossings of illicit drug smuggling activity." The way to address border pollution (waste left behind by illegal border crossers), the spread of 3rd world disease, and drug smuggling is to CLOSE the border, not open it. These quotes by Perry will come back to haunt.

"As the governor has continued to say, in Texas, we have a shared interest with our counterparts in Mexico to
securing the international border between our countries in order to protect our citizens and the legitimate cross border trade and travel that will help bring jobs to each of our economies.
Gov. Perry will continue to urge the federal government to secure the international border from the growing threat of drug cartels in northern Mexico."
He is clearly FOR securing the border.
He is promoting the same kind of friendly neighborhood trade with Mexico, as we have with Canada, but clearly makes it all contingent on securing the border.

An observation:
Full disclosure I support another (not yet) candidate. But all these sudden Perry-bashing articles from the way back machine, seem sort of like what dems would do.
You know. Saul Alinsky.
Just saying. How about we do things differently here?...

"as long as we demonstrate the will to address the obstacles to it. An open border means poverty has given way to opportunity, and Mexico's citizens do not feel compelled to cross the border to find that opportunity." IOW -- he is telling Fox to get his act together and get the Mexican economy going, so the Mexicans won't leave Mexico to come to the US in search of a better life, that the "open border" is contingent on not having hordes of people from Mexico coming here illegally.

From the article:
“If Mr. Perry wants to be a national candidate for office, his handling of these issues over the years will be tough obstacles for the Texas governor to overcome with not only primary voters but also the national electorate. Similar to the circumstances Governor Mitt Romney faces when he must answer questions about why he continues to support his Massachusetts health care plan, Mr. Perry may very well have to deal with his own legislative baggage about the border.”

Good job.
Keep this research up.
Perry is pretending he’s someone he’s not.
We’ve had enough of McCain like tactics ie: he’s conservative while he’s running, and then reverts to full-blown RINO after he wins.
NO MORE RINOS!

I understand Anybody but Obama. And if Perry is the Republican candidate I’ll vote for him.
But in the Primaries? No! Anyone who wants open borders... Well, that’s the kiss of death politically. He might have good ideas for other things but this is a deal-breaker for me.

I’m one to believe when you are re-elected with 32% of the vote in ‘06 you realize you should change some things.

What EXACTLY is there to disagree with in Perry’s statement? He is talking about a Mexico that does not exist and is not likely to exist in the foreseeable future.

I can’t bring myself to support Perry because of his stance on illegals.
Of course I would vote for him in a general election against Obama but if elected he is not going to change the direction of the government on many issues important to conservatives.
