Texas Governor Rick Perry, Republican, reportedly being pushed by Texas lawmakers to throw his hat into the GOP presidential ring, very often touts his background on border security, but what about the Mr. Perry's past remarks and actions about immigration and the border? He is currently supporting a bill that was just passed by the Texas Senate that would give greater power to police officers to question those who are detained about their legal status. The AP reports:
The 19-12 vote early Wednesday came after nearly eight hours of emotional debate in which Democrats railed against the bill as racist and a tool to harass Latinos.
The bill pushed by Republican Gov. Rick Perry now goes to the House for consideration, where it is expected to easily pass. The Republican super-majority in the House passed a similar version during the regular session.
Perry and supporters say the bill will help police fight crime committed by illegal immigrants. But opponents, including law enforcement chiefs in the state's largest cities and immigrant rights activists, say the measure will allow rogue officers to target Hispanics.
However, Governor Perry appeared to be talking differently about the border when he first came to office. In a 2001 Border Summit speech, Governor Perry described to fellow border governors and others in attendance the amount of poverty :
"President Foxs vision for an open border is a vision I embrace, as long as we demonstrate the will to address the obstacles to it. An open border means poverty has given way to opportunity, and Mexicos citizens do not feel compelled to cross the border to find that opportunity. It means we have addressed pollution concerns, made substantial progress in stopping the spread of disease, and rid our crossings of illicit drug smuggling activity."

You won’t be saying that when they come here in droves and undercut our wages.
From the article:
“If Mr. Perry wants to be a national candidate for office, his handling of these issues over the years will be tough obstacles for the Texas governor to overcome with not only primary voters but also the national electorate. Similar to the circumstances Governor Mitt Romney faces when he must answer questions about why he continues to support his Massachusetts health care plan, Mr. Perry may very well have to deal with his own legislative baggage about the border.”
Good job.
Keep this research up.
Perry is pretending he’s someone he’s not.
We’ve had enough of McCain like tactics ie: he’s conservative while he’s running, and then reverts to full-blown RINO after he wins.
NO MORE RINOS!
Ping for later
Boy did I apparently open up a can of worms.
Just a reminder: I’m not a Perry supporter. I could change my mind on that, but it just seems like there’s a rush to mudsling against the guy is all.
Maybe I should stick to supporting Palin. :)
(if she would announce...)
That is impossible, America will always mean a better life than Mexico, even after we become Mexican, the Northern section will still be better than the Southern.
By the way, once the border is "open", then there won't be anymore illegality.
Maybe against drug cartels, but Perry is clearly in favor of continuing unchecked illegal immigration into this country, as his pathetic record of leadership on this issue demonstrates.
Hell, my pocketbook demonstrates it. You ought to see what illegal aliens have done to the building trades here. An honest American can no longer even make a living in some trades in this state.
Rick Perry/Scott Brown 2012! < /sarcasm >
I understand Anybody but Obama. And if Perry is the Republican candidate I’ll vote for him.
But in the Primaries? No! Anyone who wants open borders... Well, that’s the kiss of death politically. He might have good ideas for other things but this is a deal-breaker for me.
10 years ago. Things change.
Here it comes...
So, examining a politician's record is now employing Saul Alinsky tactics? Pardon me, but no politician is above scrutiny by the voters.
I’m one to believe when you are re-elected with 32% of the vote in ‘06 you realize you should change some things.
“We must say to every Texas child learning in a Texas classroom, “We dont care where you come from, but where you are going, and we are going to do everything we can to help you get there.” And that vision must include the children of undocumented workers. Thats why Texas took the national lead in allowing such deserving young minds to attend a Texas college at a resident rate. Those young minds are a part of a new generation of leaders[;] the doors of higher education must be open to them.”
If Rick Perry said that, then he needs to be defeated. That statement is indefensible.
What EXACTLY is there to disagree with in Perry’s statement? He is talking about a Mexico that does not exist and is not likely to exist in the foreseeable future.
Actually, I don’t have such sinister motives. I am one of those FReepers who thinks it’s important to examine a candidate’s record instead of buying a “pig in a poke” or blindly jumping on a bandwagon.
I want to be an informed voter, don’t you? And the only way to do that is to examine the facts.
Sorry if that bugs you. Take the paranoia elsewhere.
“allowing such deserving young minds to attend a Texas college at a resident rate.”
There is a big difference between allowing them to pay resident rate, vs. the Dems “Dream Act” where they want to give gov subsidy and citizen status to illegal immigrants for attending college.
And did you consider the consequences, when you say ‘Perry must be defeated” — THAT means OBAMA WILL GET REELECTED. Is that preferable to you?
Chill.
I already backed down. I can get back in this if you want.
You were the same guy stumping for Trump a while back. What a joke.
