Taking regular exercise, drinking only in moderation and watching what you eat makes no difference to one's chances of reaching 100, research has found.
Those who are lucky enough to qualify for a telegram from the Queen have simply been dealt a good genetic hand at birth, the study indicates.
Academics studied almost 500 people between 95 and 109 and compared them with over 3,000 others born during the same period.
They found those who lived extremely long lives ate just as badly, drank and smoked just as much, took just as little exercise and were just as likely to be overweight as their long-gone friends.

99 would satisfy me if I had all of my mental acuity and was fully ambulatory.
It never hurts to do things, eat healthy, take supplements, etc. to help you live a healthy life — but many recommendations are excessive. And even if you have good genes, you shouldn’t abuse your body, but there is a middle road of everything in moderation.
My Grandpa lived to 100 and would of lived longer except a sick person came to his hundredth B-Day party and he died of pneumonia two weeks later. He drove till he was 95 and rode around on his riding mower after that. Didn’t smoke but chewed tobacco his whole life. Worked till he was 70+ and won a fistfight against a 40 year old when he was 75.
He worked hard his whole life though. I sit on my ass in front of a computer for a living.
I remember him telling me how during the depression he ate “Lard sandwiches” for lunch. Just two pieces of home made bread with pig fat in between. Even when he was old he would sometimes take a dollop of lard and sprinkle some sugar on it as a snack.
Good, I should have never quit smoking then.
"What is the secret of a long and happy life?"
"Well," he replied, "I smoke a carton of cigarettes and drink a case of whiskey everyday, eat nothing but bacon and ice-cream and do drugs regularly."
"Thats amazing!" the women said. "And how old are you?"
"26" the man replied.
she as born in England in 1896 - remembered Queen Victoria's funeral cortege. She was a consummate story teller and possessed that fine - and sometimes a bit bawdy - sense of humor.
She'd have a bit of bread with her butter ;o) ,,, ate few vegetables, lots of meat with out worrying about fat.
She had two favorite drinks: red rose tea and Old Fashioneds - altho’ vodka was not shunned.
I have noticed that whiskey seems to be a common denominator in people living - and healthily - over 100.
Wish I could stand the taste of it!
Gee, what surprise. Not.
“And how old are you?”
“26” the man replied.”
LOL!
As I said in an earlier post — everything in moderation, your genes can only help so much.
There's a rather grim future for our former USA.....glad we won't see all of the downfall; just enough, apparently, to keep us in totally pissed-off mode.
Exactly. Unless I have a boatload of money to take care of myself financially and I can get around and take care of myself, I don’t want to live that long.
Living to be 100 is probably genes, but living to be 75 probably does have something to do with lifestyle. Many don’t make it 75 (or the average life expectancy in the US).
(I considered myself fortunate to have had mine with me until just after his 94th birthday in August of 2007....hard to believe we're approaching what would have been his 98th).
Give your Dad a kiss for me.
So I went to the doctor and asked him if I’d live to be 90. He asked me,
“Do you smoke?’
“No, I quit”
“Do you drink?”
“No. I quit that too.”
“Do you eat red meat?”
“No, I stopped that”
“Do you chase women?”
“I’d like to, but I quit that too.”
Then what the hell do you want to live to 90 for?
So I went to the doctor and asked him if Id live to be 90. He asked me,
Do you smoke?
No, I quit
Do you drink?
No. I quit that too.
Do you eat red meat?
No, I stopped that
Do you chase women?
Id like to, but I quit that too.
Then what the hell do you want to live to 90 for?

That’s great!
A doctor on his morning walk, noticed an old lady sitting on her front step smoking a cigar, so he walked up to her and said,
“I couldn’t help but notice how happy you look! What is your secret?”
“I smoke ten cigars a day,” she said. “Before I go to bed, I smoke a nice
big joint. Apart from that, I drink a whole bottle of Jack Daniels every
week, and eat only junk food. On weekends, I pop pills, get laid, and I
don’t exercise at all.”
“That is absolutely amazing! How old are you?”
“Forty,” she replied!
“Man’s days are determined; you have decreed the number of his months and have set limits he cannot exceed.” —Job 14:5
My mother’s family is full of heavy smokers, and not ONE of them has ever had lung cancer. However, many of them have died from heart disease. While genes don’t dictate everything, and a healthy diet and exercise do help maintain a good quality of life, man’s battle against mortality is futile. That’s why we must look toward Eternity and make decisions that count toward that end.
My mom is quickly approaching 80 and used to eat lunch with a doctor friend. He would put pepper on his hard boiled egg because salt was bad, never smoked or drank, exercised regularly. She told me over a steak dinner the other day that she missed visiting with him. He died of a heart attack at 65.
They just keep truckin and doing what they love to do, smoke, eat, and drink. Excercise is walking from the sofa to the refrigerator and mail box.. They don't listen to today's experts on how to live a long life...It seem's instead of asking experts, they should ask the old folks that have succeeded in living to be old..
