On Wednesday's NBC Nightly News, anchor Brian Williams reported on another development in the Great Obama Recovery:
"We saw some astounding new numbers that came out today. They showed the number of Americans relying on food stamps has hit another all-time record. These numbers would come as a huge disappointment to President Lyndon Johnson, who launched his War on Poverty back in 1964. Nearly 46 million of your fellow citizens are receiving food stamp assistance. That represents 21 million American households. Numbers went up in 49 out of 50 states."
Certainly discouraging numbers, but not astounding. Unless, of course, you somehow expected the machinations of President Barack Obama & Associates to do anything other than kill any hope of economic recuperation.
President Lyndon Johnson may have been disappointed, but the chief warrior in the War on Poverty shouldn't be given total credit, if that's the correct word, for the food stamp program. That distinction belongs to another liberal hero, John F. Kennedy.
According to the JFK Presidential Library and Museum's Web site, on February 2, 1961, Kennedy asked "Congress for program to help end recession, including food stamps, extended benefits for unemployed workers and welfare payments for their children." This was followed by his first executive order, which announced a three-year food stamp "pilot" program. We all know what happens to temporary government programs; his successor and Congress made it permanent with the Food Stamp Act of 1964:
The Department (of Agriculture) estimated that participation in a national FSP would eventually reach 4 million, at a cost of $360 million annually.
Kennedy brother-in-law Sargent Shriver ran LBJ's Office of Economic Opportunity. In 1967, when about $700 million a year was devoted to food assistance programs, Shriver estimated that another billion dollars would permanently solve the problem of hunger in America.

Redistribution of wealth DOES NOT WORK. When are the liberal idiots going to learn?
Hmmm. That's interesting information. Does Maria know her father was a moron?
When you hand out money, Brian, people will take it. Try to wrap your vapid, news anchor pea brain around that concept.
Yeah, it must be LBJ’s fault.
Or... well... ANYONE but Obama, who’s driven the economy of the United States to its knees.
The worst president, by far, in the entire history of the nation remains a media hero.
Clearly the fault of “greedy”, exploitative whites, correct OrangeFace?
Work? You must be assuming a goal that these people don't have. Because it IS WORKING for THEIR goals.
Interesting article. Remember that a liberal media type wrote this. And even Williams acknowledges the complete and utter failure of LBJ’s Great Society programs as we see the aftermath.
But yet... Will he or any other liberal call for halting (or even slowing down) the widespread abuses of the food stamp fiasco?
Nope. Democrats know that the wealthy will pay for it all. And the poor will keep voting for more “free pie”.
if you can’t win a war in 47 years you are obviously employing the wrong strategy.
Exactly. and if wealthy lib TV anchors don’t believe it, they can check out some of their own like Sam Donaldson and his sheep rance subsidies!!!
“When you hand out money, Brian, people will take it. Try to wrap your vapid, news anchor pea brain around that concept.”
Exactly!
“They showed the number of Americans relying on food stamps has hit another all-time record.”
The reality is:
“They showed the number of Americans taking advantage of free handouts has hit another all-time record.”
“Hmmm. That’s interesting information. Does Maria know her father was a moron?”
Sure she does, that’s why she married Arnold. She wanted a moron for a husband, just like daddy was.
Lyndon Bird was a real help to our nation.
We can thank Kennedy’s handlers for pairing these two up on a ticket.
And don’t forget those criminals who planned and carried out the assassination under someone’s orders.
The first guy to get food stamps, I think he was from West Virginia, said after a few months he notifed the county that he didn’t need them anymore because he’d found a job. Guess what. He could never get them to stop sending them to him.
He would not be disappointed, rather, he would be glad.
LBJ: “I’ll have those n***** voting Democratic for the next 200 years.”
Now, blacks are twice as likely to use food stamps as whites and other minorities are attracted to the democrats bag of goodies. Food stamps, section 8, ssi, medicaid, free cellphones, affirmative action, set asides, EIC, half of the country has no income tax liability, etc. They have fostered dependency for political gain and our country has been financially ruined. Forget the debt, our unfunded entitlement liabilities, which do not show up in the debt calculation, are at least four times the national debt.
record number on food stamps
record numbe.er of obese people
coincidence?
(hint: not many “rich” people are fat)

Rush put it well today: Taking from those who will not vote for you and giving to those who will.
These numbers would come as a huge disappointment to President Lyndon Johnson, who launched his War on Poverty back in 1964.No. They want you broken and strung out. Then, they own you.
They don't want a "solution"--they want you under their feet.
LBJ wouldn’t be disappointed -
To the contrary, he would be as happy as a democrat at a Che Guevera rally.
It is well known and documented that the driving force behind LBJ’s “War On Poverty” was his desire to to create a new class of people dependant on federal government handouts. He intentionally developed programs to create a huge welfare class with the goal of inculcating loyalty to the democrat party as the patron of the modern welfare state.
He wouldn’t be disappointed but might be pleasantly surprised at just how successful his programs have been in creating a class of people happy to live off handouts.
We're obviously bogged down and in a quagmire. I expect Williams next observation will be to ask the President what our exit strategy should be in regards to the War on Poverty.
Yea - that's gonna happen.............
