The West Texas jury deciding the fate of polygamy cult leader Warren Jeffs listened through headphones to 21 minutes of heavy breathing yesterday. Some in the room wept. Others held their hands over their mouths. The X-rated recording, a cornerstone of the state’s child-sex-assault case, allegedly chronicled Jeffs’ encounter with a 12-year-old girl, an episode that ended with the self-proclaimed prophet declaring, “In Jesus Christ, amen.”
The jurors heard an almost inaudible voice. “Amen,” echoed the child.
It got worse. According to prosecutors, Jeffs and his new “celestial wife” were not alone. A dozen of his most trusted men were witnesses to the “sealing.” It was a family affair: At least one of Jeffs’ other wives, his purported favorite, Naomi, was also in the room. “What are you feeling?” Jeffs asked the girl. And in a moment that froze everyone in the courtroom, she answered meekly, “Very well, thank you.”

BTW: AAG Eric Nichols and AG Greg Abbott have made it abundantly clear that this case is NOT about religion. It is about sexual assault and aggravated sexual assault of a child.

Who ever knows with a jury? Maybe they've heard so much since AAG Nichols presented the dates and the DNA they wanted to review it. Maybe they're in shock? But, yeah. That's pretty much the question everyone is asking on twitter. You can follow agong here:

I agree. I understand they charged the “leader” but that doesn’t make the crimes of the other adults less (in my opinion). Personally, I think they should have charged every adult who participated and YES... that includes the so called “Moms” who surrendered their daughters.

I do have experience with people marrying very young. My Uncle was 16 and married his 14 year old girlfriend the day she turned 15. I myself married very young as well (been married 14 years to her now).
Serious question. Say you’re in TX & a 20 year old guy marries a 14 year old girl (under parental consent), then divorces her a few months later. A week after the divorce they sleep together.

The jury has asked to hear the tape and see the transcript again. The judge told them initially they could only see the transcript once.
I hope this doesn’t end up with a hung jury. But I can see at least one person saying “I can’t be sure that’s a 12 year old girl on the tape and I can’t be sure they’re actually having sex.”
Or, what if there’s a mormon or two on the jury who thinks this is persecution?

Major understatement!
There is no transcript. The Court reporter hasn't had time to transcribe anything yet. The Judge offered to have the Court reporter read them anything of Rebecca Musser’s testimony they would like to hear. SOP.
They also want to re-listen to all 3 tapes. Understandable to me. If they were listening with head phones and someone was jumping up and down in front of them - they may have been distracted.
Re: Becky Musser’s testimony. She gave many definitions that were specific to the sect Mr. Jeffs belongs to. Perhaps this was new information to them and they want to compare the definitions she gave with the things they're hearing on the tape.
I'd call that a serious and thoughtful jury.
Where I got my information was the T.V. show In Session. The tape of him raping the little girl while other people were present also had a transcript for the jury to follow along with. That’s the only tape that had a transcript and that’s the one the jury wants to listen to again. Again, according to In Session.
There is one piece of evidence that should convict him and that is DNA proving he fathered a child with a 14 year old. They don’t need a tape.
There is a transcript of at least ONE of the audio tapes. There was testimony about how long it took to get it transcribed (Over 5 hours).
The jury wasnts to hear all 3 audio tapes plus review part of the Musser testimony (I’m thinking it is the ‘get close’ part).
I hope this guy gets his due. If he walks nobody will ever have the courage to break away from this creep.
But first they're going to lunch.
