Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) repeatedly criticized Democrats last year for voting on legislation that members didnt have time to read. "Read the Bill" language was even included in the GOP's Pledge to America to ensure lawmakers would have adequate notice to review legislation.
"Neither members of Congress or the public were given time to read the trillion-dollar stimulus before it passed. Nobody read the cap-and-trade bill. Nobody read the budget. And yet Democrats approved them anyway," Boehner said in a video last year. Every major bill should be posted online and publicly available for at least 72 hours."

“due to the Dems, had no way to adhere to the 72 hour rule”
BS. That immoveable deadline shtick is getting a bit stale by now, the statists use it too much. Boehner has learned a lot from his pals Pelosi and Reid. What do you suppose would happen if there were no deal tomorrow? I think nothing would happen. I would not be surprised if they could find tricks and gimmicks to extend the immovable deadline out to the end of the year if they had to. They already moved the immovable deadline once, from June to now. The reason they rushed this through is the same reason they rushed through TARP, Obamacare and other statist wet dreams. It is because this deal massively sucks, Boehner knows it massively sucks and he wanted to get it done before conservatives found out just exactly how massively it sucks. That is why Boehner reneged on his three day promise. This deal supposedly cuts around $2 trillion in spending according to the CBO over the next ten years. Does anybody believe they will really make even these anemic cuts in the out years? If absolutely zero was done to the budget for 10 years, the CBO would score it as a $9.5 trillion cut. That means this great republican negotiated deal only slows the out of control rate of government growth by about 20%. It does not really cut a damned thing, government will continue its explosive growth at 80% of the speed it is growing now. The republicans elected last year promised to cut government and reduce spending. Seen any of that yet? I havent. They promised to do something about Obamacare. Have they repealed or even attempted to defund Obamacare? They promised to reign in out of control government regulation. Have they repealed the light bulb ban? Boehner was particularly treacherous in how he handled that vote. The truth is that Boehner, Cantor, McConnell and the rest of the establishment republican crew are not that different from the Pelosi/Reid establishment rat crew. The difference between the two groups is in degree, not in direction. Boehners action speak louder than his words and they tell me that the two groups have a common goal in growing the government. Why should the people who voted republican in 2010 expecting a change in direction support these liars again? Will they promise to do more cool conservative stuff they will renege on once they get re-elected? If I was trying to get a third party movement started in the USA, I could never handle it as effectively as Boehner is doing it now.
It's not what I call it, it's what it's called when a deal is made where neither side gets everything they wanted.
Exactly what did we get from the Democrats...?
Exactly what did you expect to get from the Democrats?
This country has no leadership. The democrats and the marxists that are guiding their agenda maybe leading their agenda. However, there hasn’t been an American that actually represented everyone, and was able to lead as past the current problems. We are being led by a minority, towards an agenda which will destroy us.
We don't need leadership, just for the government to get the Hell out of our way....we'll manage quite well without "leadership" from Washington.
You answered my question with another question, so I will answer my own question for you... We got nothing in this deal. That's why it was NOT a compromise.
The day I realized they sent McCain against Obama, I started.
Welcome aboard. It’s mostly common sense, but let me know if you need some advice.
We have to pass it to find out how they’re screwing us.
Having only the nominal control of 1/2 of 1/3 of the government, what did you hope or expect to “get” (using a debt ceiling as an “opportunity” to extract some budget concessions) and how would you suggest House leadership go about doing that?
I EXPECT for Republicans not to vote to increase spending. Don’t give me this nonsense about not controlling all 3 houses. They did before and did nothing. They complained then that the reason they could accomplish nothing was because they needed a filibuster proof Senate. Well not only is that near impossible to achieve we know what would have happened next would be the GOP claiming certain members couldn’t vote a certain way because their states would be displeased. Then they’d say they need to control 3/4ths of each branch. What it comes down to is they want power JUST LIKE THE DEMOCRATS and have no intention of ever fullfillng their promise so as they can help.
The House controls spending. Bills originate in the House. All they had to do was not authorize an increase in spending. That’s it. That was in their power. Nevermind if the media rains Hell upon their head. They had it within their power not to have their puppet strings pulled and to take it to the people. Risky? well if you want to spend decades in Congress I suppose so but if they were men and women of principle who meant what they said about debt being unsustainable and this country on verge of financial ruin they’d have done it. And that’s why I’m furious at the freshman. They “claimed” they didn’t care of re-election but were on a mission to sve this economy....didn’t take long at all for them to adapt.
We can’t continue with this GOP. It has suicidal tendencies. I hoping for a filibuster.
They pee-ed all over the 2010 electorate and the marching orders, didn’t they??
“They promised to do something about Obamacare. Have they repealed or even attempted to defund Obamacare?”
Yes, they did try, and because we don’t have the votes, it got nowhere. Geez, what is wrong with the brains of some Freepers? WE DON’T HAVE THE VOTES!!!!!!! Comprende?
You expect miracles where there aren’t any. And drag the debt limit crisis out endlessly? Let’s say for just a few more weeks. The markets would go totally negative, we would be downgraded by Moody and S&P’s, and to what end? And the damage to our credit would mean we would incur millions more in debt added on top of what we currently have. The outcome would be the same anyway three weeks later or even later than that, as WE DON’T HAVE THE VOTES.
Geez, what thick heads one runs into, incapable of understanding the obvious. Dragging this out would just damage the Pub Party further, and make winning in 2012 that much harder. This is what must happen. We must win in 2012, not fight a war that we can’t win right now. I just don’t understand how anyone can deny the obvious, unless they are running on pure emotion, and no rationale.
Why and how is it immoveable.
Do you really think a couple of days delay would create panic and chaos? Shoot they'd just furlough a few hundred thousand government workers, just like they do when a budget bill is not passed and in the absence of a continuing resolution.
Excellent reply to “what did you hope or expect.”
I would say watch the price of gold and silver over the next month to see what the market REALLY thinks about this deal. Gold & silver goes down - good deal for the country... Gold & silver goes up - it stinks!
Who set it, what would have happened if Congress "went over" by a few days.
"The deadline" , along with "the Emergency", is what they use to get "the sheeple" to drink the KoolAide.
You said “WE DONT HAVE THE VOTES.”
I say WE DON’T HAVE THE MONEY BONER JUST HANDED OBAMA. Geez, what thick heads one runs into, incapable of understanding the obvious.
When exactly was any vote to defund any portion of Obamacare? I must have missed it. The House has the power of the purse. The republicans do control the House. I expect them to use that power but they won’t. They could start defunding protions of it, but they do not. Why? Because they are just as much into big government as the other party is. Country club republicans and the democrats are pretty much two sides of the same coing.
Wow. Could you be a more condescending snob? For a second there I thought you were a liberal.
Kind of like when the bank doesn't get the third mortgage payment or the credit card provider doesn't get the payments for several months or the utility company doesn't get the payment or the... (you get the idea) - they start shutting off the credit and/or the services...
... what would have happened if Congress "went over" by a few days.
A "few days" to do what or negotiate what or talk about what that hasn't been done, negotiated, talked about for a month now?
What would a "few days" buy them, except maybe a ratings downgrade (which may be coming anyway but it will cost the taxpayers more and will increase the deficit/debt), more pressure from every corner (forget the media) and eroding support (just like an ill-fated and poorly-thought-out attempt by Paul Ryan to reform Medicare from within a budget process)?
And forget about 10-year "savings" from any "plan" or "deal" hashed out now. They are no more real than the 5-year economic plans that were the hallmark of the Soviet Union's economic "programs." The real discussion about spending priorities and entitlement reforms will be done in the presidential (and congressional, especially Senatorial) campaigns and elections next year.
The ceiling would have to be raised in any case, unless the U.S. government suddenly went into budget surplus (which, as we know, is the fantasy-land) so the only question was how to exact the best price from the "budget" while raising the ceiling. Obviously, it was not helped by the demands that the ceiling need not be raised at all, and neither Tea Party members nor the GOP leadership were ready for alternatives. Neither this would be good for the already/still sickly economy and many more people in the real world would be affected by prolonging political standoff, without any more practical benefits.
For now, the way they played their hand (having no real plan at any given point to go the distance, except for gambling on Charlie Sheen-like "winning" the lose-lose-lose political and economic situation) the end of this "drama" and the uncertainty is the best for the economy and American companies and employment and the taxpayers.
The huge benefit of the fight - that was achieved - was that now the country's focus is squarely on the runaway and unsustainable government spending and government priorities (what needs to be done to avoid becoming "Greece") and that "tax the rich" has become weaker and weaker argument as the fight went on. The rest of the debate about the spending, size, scope and the priorities of the government will be done on the 2012 campaign trails. But this was a good assist.

You can't always get what you want but if you try... you get what you need... sometimes.
Who cares what the GOP got? I'm more concerned with what the American people got.
