10:56am | Good Saturday morning.
The House and Senate will convene at 1pm today. The House will likely go out of session after a vote on the Reid plan to raise the debt limit, while the Senate will stick around until 1 am Sunday to vote to end debate on the plan.

5:29pm | No closer.
Reid to reporters after his meeting with Obama: “The question is are we closer to an agreement, the answer is ‘no.’”
These people are arguing over pennies. Whatever solution they come up with, won’t make a damn bit of difference, default is inevitable.
Yes. 100% correct.
None of this matters. It is all a game and the American people once again are the losers.
Now we wait for the next vote - in a few hours.
Yep, just as soon as I get done riiiiping this bandaid off.
Pure Kabuki Theater.
The only thing at play here is that the Marxist wants the Debt Ceiling to be raised enough to support his spending until after the 11/2012 election. That is all. The rest of this nonsense (”arguing over pennies” as you point out) means nothing.
The Dummies want no restrictions on their immoral and unethical handling of the American Taxpayers money.
Reid thinks it’s HIS money and HE will decide what happens to it.
Just like Tarp 1 and Tarp 2. Oh and the great bankruptcy causing Obamacare.
If the Repubs cave to this Obamageddon action yet again. It will get very close to time for a March on Washington AGAIN.
I can’t believe they are arguing this vote with Chuck Shumer sitting as the President of the Senate!
Reid wont allow a vote!
DeMint and others--yes, even Boehner--were left without boots-on-the-ground backup from the grassroots.
Republicans have had to fallback because they didn't get the support needed to pressure Democrats to pass it. Now they're taking on "friendly fire" from their own "supporters."
It's a fiasco and the Democrats are celebrating.
The "compromise" that comes out tonight, that will be impossible to change after midnight eastern, that we won't get to scrutinize before final form, will be absolutely hideous.
It will not be what Boehner wanted, not what McConnell wanted. It won't what I wanted, not what DeMint, West, Ryan, or most others wanted.
It will be a BAD DEAL but it will be the deal that must be made because the grassroots backup for "Cup, Cap & Balance" wasn't there.
It will be just as Boehner warned: the nearer we are pushed to Aug 2, the weaker the GOP's bargaining position gets. Well, this is it. This is where a "Tea Party" Tantrum--aimed NOT at Democrat's obstruction of "Cut, Cap & Balance"--but at Republicans, will have put us.
I was "tea party" in thinking long before it existed. Decades ago a deficit hawk, I was among those here on FR mocking Tom DeLay for his sham "no fat" budget lies and criticizing W's spending habits. But that GOP is finished. It's largely been taken to the woodshed, it's on the right course.
I never joined a "tea party" because I'm naturally suspicious of populist movements and this week showed why: allies became enemies and enemies became spectators cheering on the infighting!
The energy of the "tea party" is great but it needs to be focused on advancing objectives rather than looking for ways to hit self-destruct.
I am praying this current fiasco does not foreshadow a second Obama term and Pelosi returning to the Speakership.
Doing that would make Obama a de facto dictator. Time to review constitutional provisions for impeachment if that occurs.
From POTUS to DICUS (Dictator-in-Chief, Pronounced like Monty Python's, Biggus DICUS)
From POTUS to DICUS (Dictator-in-Chief, Pronounced like Monty Python's, Biggus DICUS)
I heard Rush say that he heard from somebody on the Hill that such a bill - to mandate payment of SS, military, etc. - was introduced by Michele Bachmann and did pass the HOUSE. But that it never went anywhere after that. I have not tried to confirm or not confirm this...
Boehner is in no way the same as Reid, Pelosi and Obama. It is delusional to think so. Your hero Rush does not believe that, because he lives in literalville. It isn’t true.
John knows the military should get paid, that there’s no excuse for not paying them, but he also knows that Obama can choose not to pay them. Instead of saying that, he put it in the framework of trying to resolve the issues so it won’t come to that.
You chose to believe that he deliberately lied and wanted to alarm and hurt our military. No, that’s Obama, Reid and Pelosi. It isn’t Boehner, and even your hero Rush knows it isn’t.
It’s clear to me that he held back on saying, well, if you military don’t get paid, it’s Obama doing it to you. Because you should get paid, there’s no reason for you not to be. I don’t think he wants to go there rhetorically, but would rather try to get somewhere so that Obama doesn’t do that to our troops. What a horrible conundrum...having to accuse the CIC of deliberately not paying his troops.
I think Boehner will go there only if he has no choice, and that would be if nothing is resolved and the money has to be prioritized and Obama chooses to do something else with the money before paying the troops.
Once Obama actually pulls that, the bets are off on rhetoric...
9:31pm | Democrats are accusing Republican Senators of a filibuster.
Harry Reid has repeatedly requested unanimous consent to vote on his bill, but Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has demanded that vote require 60 votes. Reid calls this a filibuster, because Democrats want a straight majority vote on the bill.
9:28pm | The next big deadline is midnight.
If a deal is not reached by midnight tonight, the Senate will be unable to act to raise the debt limit by August 2nd without unanimous consent a tall order.
The 1 am vote is not on the Reid bill but to end debate on the Reid bill. The final vote would be on Monday morning if the cloture vote passes.
Is there anything going on right now on this debt “crisis” resolution? If so, any ideas on how I can follow it? Thanks all.
9:38pm | “Triggers” explained.
Expect to be hearing the word “triggers” thrown around a lot this weekend. Republicans are demanding that there be consequences if spending cuts put forward by a bipartisan fiscal commission fail to pass Congress.
The Boehner plan makes a second increase in the debt limit conditional on passing those cuts to the deficit and passing a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution.
Democrats are demanding that the debt limit not be held hostage by a more cuts and especially a balanced budget amendment which is certain to fail and are counter-offering with spending cuts and other proposals to incentivize the consideration of the commission’s cuts by both parties
