Tropical Storm Don has formed in the Gulf of Mexico. Current forecast track indicates Texas should receive much needed precipitation. Interests in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico should monitor the progress of Don.
Thanks for the ping, I will be keeping an eye on Don, gonna do my prep tomorrow.
Honestly couldn’t say. I’ve been through them since before Alicia, but I don’t recall. I’m not hard wired anymore at my house.
My parents live in Georgetown. They do remember that storm quite well.

Wasn’t it during Katrina that we started a parallel thread for the big graphics — that way the people who need the information but can’t handle big downloads are taken care of -

It just may be too early to crunch numbers on this storm.
We should know more tomorrow night about this storm. Right now, I think the NHC was caught off guard for this storm.
The Gulf of Mexico is just too warm a body of water for storms not to intensify rapidly right now...
They are not predicting this to be a Cat 1 or any sort of hurricane..................................................................................I remember they said the same thing about Alicia. Nothing to worry about, just a rain maker. That was a gulf storm also.

We did, but decided for posterity’s sake to stay link only at the time, I believe. Then no CONUS falling canes until ‘08, not sure what rules of the road were then, then three years later in ‘11 we might be able to post large graphics unless the people stealing wireless from three blocks away complain about the wire-up speed :)

We have been getting pretty regular rains for the past several weeks here about 7 miles NE of Conroe, to the point that I am going to have to mow the grass. Downtown Conroe area has had several gully washers recently, but just gentle rain showers here.
I was one of the real whiny dial up dinousaurs. To this day I still can’t get cable or DSL at my house, even though the DSL is available a mile away.
I just got Virgin Mobile BroadBand2Go. It’s not as fast as the WiFi/Broadband all my friends 15 miles away have but a darn sight better than dial up...........and I can use it most any where.
I’m on the Comcast bundle with phone, cable & internet. I imagine I’m done for if the wind gets up to 25 mph

MODELS FORECAST THE SYSTEM TO REACH 55-65 KT BEFORE LANDFALL IN
TEXAS...AND THE INTENSITY FORECAST FOLLOWS THAT SCENARIO IN BEST
AGREEMENT WITH THE SHIPS MODEL. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT THE 48 HR
INTENSITY OF 55 KT IS WELL BEFORE LANDFALL...AND DON COULD GET
STRONGER THAN THIS BETWEEN 48-72 HR.
You only have to look at Alicia - that blew up to a Cat 3 with a lot less Gulf to work with than Don has.
This is Hurricane season, and some of us (—>’me’) like to post nifty real big graphics. Back in the day (’04), we used to post real big animated graphics before China and India discovered the interwebs and sucked up all the bandwidth. I think the animation was what shut so many potentially-affected FReepers down on dial-up.
Nautinurse has been generously administering FR PSAs on hurricanes since.. forever. It is her judgment we will adhere to.
True, but if memory serves me correctly, Alicia sat off shore a day or two longer than anticipated.
Comcast is the only cable company available in this area, but do not phone or internet, let alone bundling.
When Isabel came through here in ‘03 we were prepared to lose the electric and thus cable, but never thought about losing the phone and because we were on dial up with though we would be good to go and recharge the laptop in the car if need be.
HAH - phonelines were the first thing to go, then cable. We never lost electric except for about an hour - the next day.
