A south Bossier City homeowners association has sued to force a family to remove a front yard sign supporting their son's military service because it violated subdivision covenants.
The Burrs placed a large multicolored banner with a picture of their 20-year-old son, Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Corey Burr, and the phrase "Our son defends our freedom" in January after Corey Burr was deployed to Afghanistan.

Are you sure you’re a vet? You fought for this country so somebody can’t put up a patriotic sign on their front lawn?
Luckily, I don’t live in a HOA community and we have signs all over the place - my favorite being one neighbor’s huge “America - Love It or Leave It.” Makes me laugh every time I pass it. In fact, I drive my lib friends past it and they chuckle every time. But then I’m not into gated communities and we somehow manage to be clean and safe without resorting to gates.
And I don’t live in a ghetto either.
HOA should be banned. They act as a government entity without usual safeguards to your rights. I'd rather live in a cardboard box in an alley than an HOA.
Why is it people on FR deride Hillary Clinton for her “it takes a village” attitude and then come here and say the same thing about HOA.
They ALWAYS claim a HOA protects their property values (it takes a village) like it is the duty of all of us to do so. Simply unbelievable double standard. It is NOT my duty to protect property values of anyone or anything. What part of property rights do HOA so-called conservatives NOT understand?
I don’t know what kind of HOA you belong to but where I used to live (6 years ago) you joined up and paid dues. The town was not controlled by a HOA and you certainly didn’t sign a contract once you bought the house. They had no control over other people’s property except to occasionally send a letter telling you to cut your lawn. Maybe it differs from state to state. Weird.
I have to agree with you. Some weird anti-Conservative types writing in on this. It’s creeping me out.
And a lot of freepers are all for this socialist non-sense. Read some of the replies already.
I never understood these types of people who sue others who put a cross or a flag or in this case their sons picture.
Do they really care THAT much?! Why does it even bother them..
Precisely why all HOA’s should cease to exist or everyone can move to communist island and have matching mail boxes.
I don’t belong to any kind of HOA - I eliminated houses in mandatory HOAs when I was looking.
Funny thing OldNavyVet,
I live in a private airpark community.
For two years I was HOA president, two previous on the board.
Everyone with a worthless bitch, complaint or grudge against another neighbor immediately became MY problem.
Finally my term was up, I withdrew. Speak to NO one and get along much better.
Life is good.
Yeah, I’m sure I don’t live in a ghetto. And I don’t use ghetto language like you do, either.
When I was in a HOA in GA, I left my lawnmower out for my husband to start when he got home from work, because I couldn’t get it started. It was put away by dark. I got a letter complaining that I was “storing” my lawn mower in front of my house.
What is a mandatory HOA? Seriously, when I lived in a town with an HOA you just paid your dues, joined up and got into fights at meetings. It had very little teeth outside of the occasional brawl in front the community center. What’s with this mandatory thing?
That's right! Let the government restrict what kind of homeowner associations are allowed.
do i really need to add a sarcasm tag?
Exactly how is it any better to have HOAs restricting what kind of Free Expressions are allowed?
I’m not saying it’s better to have HOAs restricting free expression.
I’m saying HOAs shouldn’t be banned. Why would you want the government to have the right to ban how you want to live?
Let people choose if how they want to live. Some people want to live in an HOA. If they choose to do that they should be prepared to live up to the responsibilities of that kind of home ownership.
People should always read before they buy a home. It is the law that all HOA regs and dues be provided prior to closing on a home. Me- I would move and NEVER be in a HOA again. That’s just me I am a country living guy.
Where did you get that information and what signs are you refering to?
I was moving out of a rental, didn’t want to uproot my children from their schools, and had only HOA neighborhoods to choose from.
Here in my part of CA there are far fewer HOAs than in GA.
