John Boehner: New debt option may be worthy'
By: David Rogers July 14, 2011 09:12 PM EDT
With White House debt talks at a make-or-break stage, Speaker John Boehner signaled Thursday that hes open to new options to avert a default next month, including a novel Senate plan that would surrender much of Congresss power over Treasurys borrowing to the president.
It would be a remarkable shift for House Republicans something like telling Picketts charge to go around Cemetery Ridge and not up it. And Boehners remarks may be a ploy as he keeps throwing out options to his rank and file in hopes that they come around to the merits of the $4 trillion grand bargain he attempted with President Barack Obama last week before being pulled down by the right.
But time is running short, and to describe Congress as a confused, even panicky army at this stage is not an overstatement. Senate leaders in both parties already are working on some survival strategy. And Obama, who will address the debt issue at a press conference Friday morning, will be forced to do the same unless he can salvage a more meaningful deficit reduction strategy over the weekend.
The genius of the plan put forward by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is that it gives lawmakers what politicians most love: an out. But its so obvious in doing so that deficit hawks are dismayed at the crossroads Congress has reached.
As outlined by McConnell, Congress would temporarily surrender its power to approve any increase in the debt ceiling.

Looks like they are going to call his bluff.........sigh.......
They don't CARE if we support it.
They see it like it is: They know we'll moan and groan, post snide comments on the Internet, vote in elections we know are fixed, play by the rules..
But they don't play by the rules - they use the rules, and they will rule us.
I hold the winning hand, all the cards favor me....must find a way to lose....cave.....can’t actually let those tea party whipper snappers ruin things....New York Times profile....60 minutes segment....I’ve grown into the job....not an extremist....Rachel Madow interview...lady fingers with Lindsey Graham....where was I oh yeah “We hope to find a way to work with the President to achieve a solution together....”
Infuriating, this bunch ,they have detached themselves from OUR Realities!!
Why is it when I see stories like this it from the likes of Politico, NYT, AP or Rooters.
Remember in 2012, if there is anything left of the Constitutional Republic to save.
More debt is NOT an option.
“They weren’t elected to find an out. They were elected to do the right thing!”
Remember, these people are living ina bubble, surrounded by largely gay reporters screaming “WILL YOU STARVE GRANDMA!” at them.
They are under tremendous pressure right now, from both the folks at home, and the whacckjobs in the media.
John Boehner and Mitch McConnell are monumental disappointments. How do they think capitulation helps their party? All it does is give us four more years of Obama.
Genius my ass, it just shows how badly the republicans want to cave and continue spending. This is the same crap the republicans in the senate pull in the lame duck.
They ALREADY delegated it to a private company called the Federal Reserve, not only to borrow it from the Fed, but to allow the Fed to print it in the first place at the cost of the paper, and then loan it to the country at its face value - with interest. And that's just to GET our own currency, before we DO anything with it.
That's why this whole "crisis" is a joke. A bad joke, a harmful joke, but a joke nonetheless. Because neither the administration nor Congress calls the shots anymore, and hasn't for a long time - the Fed alone controls the money supply, and the government does what they're told.
You're watching a dog and pony show.
So win addition to defecating on the Constitution; will he also urinate on it?
Does he know know the words to his oath of office:
“Oath of Office
“I, (name of Member), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.” .”
Boehner will cave. He’s so queer.
“Actually it’s more like telling Picket’s men to kill each other”
Ha! That’s a good one, but that’s about right. The McConnell plan is a lock in the Senate. Easily 70 votes. The question will be whether Boehner decides to bring it to a vote in the House, or if he decides to fight. And I think we all know what he’ll do there. Once Boehner places the McConnell plan before the House, with all the sad language, and “tough vote” garbage that he said when he voted for the Bailout, it’ll pass, probably with 250-300 votes. Nearly all the Democrats will vote for it. The RINOs will go for it, and that will be that.
The question at that point is, what does the GOP caucus do? The GOP freshman will know at that point they’ve been sold out. I don’t know what the rules of the House are, but it seems the only logical step then for the Tea Party freshman will be to “kill” Boehner, if you will. To oust him as Speaker. It will be clear as day at that point you have GOP House members who want to clean up the mess, and you have the leadership who wants to do business as usual, go to cocktail parties and play golf. If the GOP/Tea Party members don’t revolt against the leadership, I would think the GOP will lose the House in 2012, and not retake the Senate. The only chance we would have to defeat Obama is if we have a candidate who aggressively runs against both Obama and the GOP.
The GOP does not realize that the potential exists for Trials and Hangings on the Capitol Steps.
If Politico’s calling it “genius”, the plan is obviously a win for Obomba. The truly annoying thing is that the Republicans think they can abdicate their responsibility and not suffer any consequences. They truly are idiots if that’s the case.
I do believe the GOP would be blamed for no deal and the subsequent cuts—unless the House just does its job and passes a modest bill on its own. Let the Senate Dems and Obama refuse to accept the House’s work.
As to cuts from the Dems, read this and weep—they are negotiating more than a $100B of increases at this point:

Charles may be late to the point, but he’s here advocating the right thing for Boehner and the House to do:
And if too many GOP freshmen won’t go along with it, it’s time to whip them into agreement.
