President Barack Obama told congressional leaders that a deal must be in place on Friday, or lawmakers will have to make contingency plans to raise the national debt ceiling, a top Democratic negotiator said Thursday.
Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) relayed Obamas message to reporters Thursday, saying they will have to act fast on a Plan B if a deal doesnt appear in place by tomorrow. Treasury has said the country will run out of money to pay all of its bills on Aug. 2.
"The president has expressed to the group that by Friday we have to get something done, Durbin said Thursday. And its realistic because if were going to extend the debt ceiling, it takes some time to not only write the bill but to have it scored and move forward.
Asked if that meant that Congress must move to another option if a deal isnt reached on Friday, Durbin said: We will have no choice at that point but to turn to some other option.

Be right back. Have tyo go eat my peas. The dictator said so.
Well, skooby do!
Ha! Or what?!
Now go away you spending kill-joys or I shall taunt you a second time.
He’s got golf balls to hit, ice cream to eat, trips to take, tax dollars to spend.
And Chewbacca should be coming back soon from yet another vacation.
Key words are also “all it’s bills”. So, you don’t pay all the bills, just the most important ones. The “pork” can sit and age a little.
Boner told zero no to Camp David.
So let me get this straight....
Reid wants Cantor out of the room because he is “juvenile,” yet Dick Turbin is the White House spokesman on these “negotiations”? Who the hell let him into the room?
So according to the libs we have Dick Turbin, Harry Reid, and Obama as the responsible adults in the room. Yeah, right.
The Rs need to tell zero to dump obummercare and then we talk again.
Did he actually say that?
Is there any logical reason that Social Security and Medicare should be considered more important for the government to pay than any of the other things included in the spending bills that were passed into law?
So, Obama caved. He allowed for a Plan B. Start passing Plan B in the House. Direct the Treasury to pay debt, military, ss, medicare recipients, NIH, etc., first. Then give percentage targets for the other departments. If the GOP did this, there is no way on earth the O will veto it.
Aha! Bombadan starts 8/1, no wonder the boy King is in such a big rush.
But if they had agreed to go to Camp David this weekend, would the deadline still have been tomorrow?
Heard today on TV that items NOT on the chopping block are:
Green programs for Obama’s pie in the sky green jobs - like the ones that Spain failed at
High speed rail - oh we really need that at a time like this. I understand this is highly cost inefficient.
And how many other of zero’s favorite programs is he demanding be funded that we don’t want?
He really does think he’s king.
Boner said “No dice.” He knows it’s a losing proposition. I know it’s not his first thought, so I credit Cantor.
By law certain things are going to have to be paid. Given these are entitlement programs it may be they are in line first before other things.
Is there any logical reason that Social Security and Medicare should be considered more important for the government to pay than any of the other things included in the spending bills that were passed into law?Long term, no difference. Short term, big difference. Drastically reducing this without ample time to allow people to prepare hurts the most vulnerable in our society. That is why most reform focuses on altering the structure gradually in these programs - raising the retirement age gradually over the course of a decade allows people to adjust and reduces financial exposure. “OK Buckwheat. What is a bicameral legislature?”
Honorary Civics/Civil Teacher Obama
Buhwheat: Silence
“Can you tell me what a quorem is?”
Silence
Suppose I—as president—told a co-equal branch of government that something must be done by a certain time.
Can you use the word `dictate’ in a sentence’”?
(Pause)
“How do my dictate?”
This sure sounds curious after the walkout - it’s strategy, not a real need - Obamanation wants to force a final decision on his terms. I’d say, let Friday pass with nothing decided.
