Dozens of Atlanta educators falsified tests, state report confirms

Dozens of Atlanta public school educators falsified standardized tests or failed to address such misconduct in their schools, Gov. Nathan Deal said Tuesday in unveiling the results of a state investigation that confirmed widespread cheating in the city schools dating as far back as 2001.

"I think the overall conclusion was that testing and results and targets being reached became more important than actual learning for children," Deal said. "And when reaching targets became the goal, it was a goal that was pursued with no excuses."

Falsifying test results made the schools appear to be performing better than they really were. But in the process, students were deprived of critical remedial education and taxpayers were cheated, as well, Deal said. Investigators said 178 teachers and principals working at 44 schools were involved. The educators, including 38 principals, were either directly involved in erasing wrong answers on a key standardized test or they knew -- or should have known -- what was going on, according to Deal's office.

Deal's office said 82 of the educators acknowledged involvement, according to the report. Six principals declined to answer investigators' questions and invoked the Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination, Deal said.

Whether to bring criminal charges will be up to prosecutors, Deal said.

The report also has been forwarded to the state teacher licensing board, Deal said. That agency could take disciplinary action against the educators involved. Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, who was briefed on the report, said the investigation "confirms our worst fears."

"There is no doubt that systemic cheating occurred on a widespread basis in the school system, (and) there is no question that a complete failure of leadership in the Atlanta Public School system hurt thousands of children who were promoted to the next grade without meeting basic academic standards."

Then they aren’t ‘educators.’ Probably never have been based on their products.

And those principals and teachers MAY get their wrists slapped while they continue to dumb down the students. I strongly believe that little or no action will be taken to get these miscreants moved out of the school systems.

FREEPERS should know that this isn’t just an urban school problem. Nearly all the districts, including suburban and rural districts, are cheating in various ways. Why? Because when you use the curricula mandated for government schools, it is almost impossible to do well even on simple tests of reading and math.

How about that? I used to live in GA and I chastised Nathan when he was just a Rep.

Dunno if it worked, but he’s doing a bang up job right NOW it seems.

Liberals: Education is a jobs program

Conservatives: Education is for teaching kids.

Big deal. At the defense contractor I work for you don’t have to be able to read, write or speak well at all.

We promote minorities and women at all costs. Amazing that so many that are lacking in these areas have college degrees.

Seriously...there is one guy that says “las pass sic mont.” He was born and raised in the USA and you should see his e-mail. Translation for the uninitiated is ‘Last Past Six Months.’ Whatever that means...

The public school system was modeled after a system designed to create factory workers and cogs in society’s wheel under the control of government.

When my daughter was in high school in California, they tested the kids regularly and the state funding was based on the tests.

The school my daughter attended required 100% attendance on test day, no excuses accepted. The reason was that a 20% absentee rate was permitted for the test and the school wanted to pick those 20% who would not be tested. That 20% spent two whole days in the school library and probably a couple of other less conspicuous places around the school.

The following is from a google search of Atlanta public schools....

Jul 4, 2011 – Our schools provide a vibrant, high performing learning environment with excellent teachers, the latest technologies and practices, ...

You're nothing but cheaters and typical urban democrat liberals, turning out kids who can't read beyond a 6th grade level and couldn't balance a checkbook if their life depended on it. And then your website wants to make you out to be on the cutting edge of education?

Puhleeees?
