Following bankruptcy filings by Sbarro, Perkins and Marie Callenders this year, new data suggests that other popular restaurant chains are in danger of following suit.
TheStreet.com recently looked at restaurants based on their Altman Z-Score. The website says the score is based on several aspects of a company's financial health -- including working capital, total assets, total liabilities, market capitalization, sales, retained earnings and earnings before interest & taxes (EBIT) -- to forecast the probability of it going bankrupt within two years.
Since it began the scoring system in 1968, TheStreet says the formula has been 72 percent accurate in predicting corporate bankruptcies two years prior to the filing.
The list of restaurant in order of most at risk to file for bankruptcy (limited to those with a market capitalization of $100 million):
1. Dennys 2. Wendys/Arbys 3. Mortons Restaurant Group 4. DineEquity (IHOP, Applebees) 5. Dominos Pizza 6. Bravo Brio Restaurant Group 7. McCormick & Schmicks 8. Ruths Hospitality Group (Ruths Chris Steak House, Mitchells Fish Market) 9. OCharleys 10. Einstein Noah Restaurant Group
It was "scary" with "no end in sight" in 1961. And 1971, 1981, 1991 and 2001. And it was true. There was no end. 2011 and we're still here. 2021 we'll still be here. With maybe fewer Wendy's and more Culvers.
It’s only a ‘hog trough’ if you make it one..............
Don’t scare me like that!................
Home...............
They have really good roast beef and cheddar sandwiches. And their fries are pretty kick butt too. But the best is the Jamocha milkshake. Unbelievable and nothing else like it.
Weird story.
Wendy’s bought Arby’s.
Arby’s management eventually became Wendy’s management.
Wendy’s sold Arby’s............
I’m disappointed about Sonic’s new menu. They use to have $1 junior size ice cream sundae’s, perfect size for anyone but especially for kids. I had to order the regular size sundae and they were huge and expensive. At least Braum’s still has a child size cone for a dollar!
When we traveled through Kansas it seemed every town, large or small, had a Pizza Hut.
I think the Denny’s down the street is going to take over the old Marie Callender’s building a few doors away.
Wait til ObamaCare really kicks in... then we’ll see a collapse like we’ve never seen before. And the worst part is, there is no good reason for any of this. If we were to take the shackles off our businesses, lower taxes, close down the alphabet agencies, drill for oil, and reform entitlements, we could recover from the madness foisted on us by the leftie lunatics.
They have a great chicken salad sandwich... yum! and you can get it as a wrap.
All the buffet places in Tucson are suffering. The Home Town Buffet just down the street from the dead Golden Coral is contemplating closure, it all depends on how much “new” business they get from the closing of GC. And with good reason, frankly these buffet places are a rip off unless you pig out. For the same price as lunch at GC that consists of hot plate mediocrity that mostly tastes like salt I can get a really good burger and fries at the bar and grill down the street. Half the places in town give you better food for the same price. If you’re a 3 or 4 plate person the buffets make some sense, but even when I was fat I couldn’t pack down enough of their food to make it worth the price.
Five years ago we ate there a lot.
Now, with the economy in the tank, it’s a ‘special’ dining out place. Our previous ‘special’ place was Red Lobster and some local fancy places, but money is tight....................I hope it doesn’t get to the point where our ‘special’ place is some McBurger joint..............
Red Lobster makes sense as a special dining out place, the food there is actually pretty good (I’m old enough to remember when it wasn’t glad they turned it around). If you’re in a place big enough for a Red Lobster then you can definitely eat better than GC for the same amount of money.
That’s how the Jack in the Box was around the corner in Fresno. During the day - great. After 4:00pm - yuck.
This is a tourista place, so we have most of the big name chains here, at least one of each, many of whom are on that list..............
If you want good food at a good price rule #1 is avoid the big name chains. There are exceptions to the rule of course, but by and large local guys will give you better food, better service, and better prices. Might be tougher in tourist land of course where most of the local joints are about sheering the sheep, but that’s what life off the beaten path is all about. Even in non-tourist land off the beaten path is where the good stuff is.
We have local restaurants that serve good food that don’t cater to touristas, too. They are “home cooking” types, aka “comfort food” and some nuevo cuisine types that I don’t care for............
There’s bound to be places that serve food similar to GC but cheaper and tastier. GC is just basic generic American meat and bread food. If you were in Tucson I’d tell you to go to Shooters or Codys, Shooters especially I know you can get in and out of for the same price as GC only having eaten quite good basic no-nonsense dead cow.
A group I’m in recently moved their meetings to GC, that’s why I kind of have in for them. Having had to eat there and really experienced just how really bad the food is and really expensive. Of course we met at the GC that closed, was quite pleased (not for the place closing, just that I wouldn’t get stuck eating there anymore) until someone suggested Furrs, gotta learn to speak up before the obscenely obese members of the group. It’s amazing how bad their taste in food is.
We had a local FL chain, based in Pensacola, that was just like GC, same food, same buffet style, that was here and doing well before GC came to town. Then when GC opened they went belly up.................
Trouble with these places, is for the most part, they don’t actually serve food. No, instead it is something that looks like food, tastes funny, and is more likely to have been made in a chemistry lab.
Worse yet, I think the modern grocery store has gone the same way.
We need a grocery store that only serves REAL food, grown without massive human interference, chemicals, alterations.
I suppose I can grow the stuff myself? I think that might have to be the next alternative.
When you look at national obesity today, much of it can be blamed on lack of excercise, but I actually think the majority of the problem is the content of “food” today.
