A Putnam County man mauled by two pit bulls last week died late Wednesday afternoon after being taken off life support. Roy McSweeney, 74, suffered brain damage from severe blood loss that occurred when the dogs severed one arm, partially removed the other and attacked his face, said Jennifer Biewend, his family's attorney. Capt. Johnny Greenwood of the Sheriff's Office said he was pronounced dead at 4:18 p.m.

The original Staff was created *long* before WWI as a drover dog, capable of catching and holding potentially dangerous bulls to save the drover’s life, if need be.
They were also used as “catch dogs” for swine.
The sexually repressed and infinitely twisted Victorians then used them for ‘blood sports’ such as bull baiting.
They also used many varieties of terriers for mass ‘rat pit fighting’ wagers.
The sickos would bet on anything bloody and cruel.
As far as WWI goes,

As far as I can see the woman committed manslaughter just as much as if she set up an anvil to drop on his head if he walked into his own front yard.

I’m sure you keep that Pit Bull for it’s cuddliness toward strangers. Do you read? Your baby is not safe around a Pit Bull. I’ve noticed there are parents that get a kick out of placing their offspring in dangerous scenarios to see what will happen, ‘rescue’ them at the last second, and feel like heroes afterwards. The children, if they survive, will repeat this behavior with their own kids, or someone else’s unlucky enough to be in their care, in order to relive those crazy times with dad. It’s all in the diagnostic manual.
Poor or no training in every case...unless you really want to sell the notion that triggers pull themselves.

Certain kinds of owners should never ever own such dogs. But I do tend to see a problem becoming more and more evident lately...many of the 'shelter dogs' are turning up bully/mixes. It does make me uncomfortable for perhaps unknowing or ill-informed folks may be taking on some of these dogs.
But, many dogs can be just as unpredictable too. There are biters and then there are attackers.
And then there is this: The Dogs are Alright

Suppose I were raised by irresponsible idiots, imparted no sense of appropriate behavior, brutalized and beaten throughout my childhood, left to roam the alleys terrorizing people at will with no repercussions and later went on to attack and kill someone, even if it wasn’t my ~conscious intent~ to do so; I just happened to be ‘strong enough’ to cause their death?
Oh...but I’m a *human*, you say and should “know better” therefore I should be held solely liable for my actions, correct?
This is a case of a _dumb animal_ suffering the consequences of an _even dumber animal_ who *should* have been the “smart one”.
FYI, if one my dogs gravely injured or even killed someone and they locked *me* up and gave the dog to a -better- owner, I wouldn’t have the gall to utter one peep in my defense or in outrage of the “unfairness of it all”.
What my dogs do or are _begins and ends_ with -me-.
Just like their ‘intellectual equivalent’ of a 3 year old child, I’m a _wholly responsible_ for what they do.
The woman should get every charge they can make up laid against her.
Hopefully, everything she owns now or will ever own will go to his survivors.

What are you talking about, the dog is innocent? The dog killed an elderly man. And what is this animals-before-people PETA crap?
I’m not a nanny-stater but the days of people shooting someone’s dog for harmful infraction are gone.
These dogs have been bred for attack for centuries. In my town every socially insecure loser with an IQ below 100 has one because they’re incapable of articulating and defending themselves using their language and mental skills.
Please, show us the news stories of Pit Bulls saving lives as opposed to mounting evidence against all the MORON owners who are incapable and unwilling to control these attack dogs? Must we license owners on proper training, care and handling of these dogs? Is the dog’s behavior that inherently dangerous?
Automobiles and guns don’t kill people on their own yet both are regulated. But a potentially deadly animal is loose in a neighborhood and there are no restriction?
Lemme guess, you’re a pit owner, never use a leash and walk it on other peoples’ lawns, around their kids, etc because ~he’s-never-done-anything-to-you~ ?
Yeah, maybe it is the owners but it’s a lot simpler to regulate their access to dangerous equipment than to elevate their consideration and responsibility in society.

I had no idea you intimately knew everyone in my area.
Yes, dear child, even seasoned, expert hunters can mess up...or have the ‘unexpected’ happen.
That’s why it’s called an “accident”.
Innocence or culpability means little to me from an animal. It is not a worthwhile investment of time or energy, in my mind. Dog rehabilitators think differently - but I think that even they can find a more rehabitatateable dog than ones that have killed a human being.
Yes, until owners are held liable, and the property owner who allowed this woman to maintain this danger on his property - and until Animal Control takes dangerous dogs seriously and actually follows their policy on dangerous dogs running loose - this will continue to happen.
Look at my 4 criteria again. You see this in almost every dog attack involving death or serious maiming.
1. Large and/or aggressive breed of dog.
2. Running loose, often >1 running loose.
3. Previous acts of aggression towards humans.
4. Unrealistic expectation of passivity from owner, often despite #3.
Not just guns.
Swimming pools, hot dogs, 5 gallon buckets, ATVs, marbles, all coins and all objects that will fit through a toilet paper tube, popcorn, peanuts, plastic bags, swing sets, SUVs, and mothers, who, all by themselves, are responsible for killing more kids per year than any other cause.
Oh, hell.
Just ban everything and keep your kids in a sterile bubble.
