A Putnam County man mauled by two pit bulls last week died late Wednesday afternoon after being taken off life support. Roy McSweeney, 74, suffered brain damage from severe blood loss that occurred when the dogs severed one arm, partially removed the other and attacked his face, said Jennifer Biewend, his family's attorney. Capt. Johnny Greenwood of the Sheriff's Office said he was pronounced dead at 4:18 p.m.

There are many cases of these attacks occurring where the dogs involved had never gone to the Michael Vick dogfighting academy. The way I see it, these animals are as bloodthirsty as many small dogs, but don't limit themselves to attacking rats and squirrels.
The probability of these incidents seems to rise when there are two or more pit bulls. That's not a trained ring-fighting trait, it's a pack-hunting instinct... and humans are on the target list.
Wow. How “conservative” of you to want to decide what kind of dogs other people should be allowed to own! (/sarcasm)
Right now our pit bull is curled up with our 5-year old. In your plan, I wonder if, after you’ve deprived your fellow citizens of their family pets and property, what you’ll turn your attention towards next? Maybe in your next fit of “conservatism” you’ll get rid of all those guns that kill people (/sarcasm)

I'm all for that....now, which guns have a history of killing all on their own?
Pit Bulls were the trench dogs of the Marines in WWI. They were bred as fighting dogs, as in to attack people. That is what the breed is for, attacking people. It is their instinct. They should be outlawed.
Owners whose pit bulls attack people should be charged as accessories to attempted murder. When pit bulls attack a child owners should be charged with accesory to assault upon a minor along with attempted murder.
Sue-the-crap out of the owners and throw them in prison!
Ignorance and aggression against the innocent must be punished.
My son brought home a pit bull puppy 10 years ago. He is a freaking lap dog, cuddler. 60 pounds, lets the cat boss him around. Very mellow companion.
Get them as puppies and be firm and consistent, any dog is capable of being a fluffball; however, they’re still animals and any breed can lash out if threatened, regardless of the perception of the threat.
That being said, I would be weary about any dog from the pound since their pedigree is often questionable and their upbringing unknown.
I currently have 2 Brittanies...I have had Shepherds, pit bulls, labs, I have had dogs from the pounds....
I do not allow my dogs to hurt people and my cats...they are all sweethearts either by nature or nurture....some take more training than others...but my mutts from the pound were always more sweet from the get go...
Please don’t misunderstand; I’ve had numerous pound pups and had nothing but pleasant experiences with them all. I simple mean to say that pit bulls are often given up to the ASPCA or HSUS because the owners cannot wrangle them properly. Some of them can be troublesome. It’s just a matter of being careful.
Dreadful monsters. RIP.
In MD, you are responsible for loss of livestock and must pay fair market value.
[for a 500 pound Angus, that’s some money]
God forbid your dog kill a Sacred Whitetail...now you’re looking at a felony charge and $10K fine.
If you are referring to the Lakeview guy, you have the ‘dogs kill man story” wrong, I’m afraid.
They suspect he OD’ed and the dog gnawed on him long after the fact.
“An autopsy of a 25-year-old Lake View man whose dog chewed portions of his upper body after his death proved inconclusive Wednesday, pending additional tests.
Matthew Lebold, of the 3400 block of North Janssen Avenue, was found in his home and pronounced dead at 1:13 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiners office.
Sources said Lebold apparently overdosed on drugs, but an autopsy Wednesday proved inconclusive pending the results of toxicology tests, according to the medical examiners office.
The body had been there for at least a couple of days and was already decomposing, according to a source.
A pit bull had eaten through parts of the mans face, neck and chest after he was dead, the source said.
Police found the man dead at 12:27 p.m., News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala said.”
It was *a* dog, not “dogs” and the dog did NOT kill him.
Please refrain from “rewriting” facts.
There have been *plenty* of stories where pets [cats, dogs, etc] have gnawed on their already deceased owners.
That may not be an especially pleasant thought but if you were a starving animal trapped in a house with no food, what would you do?
The dogs are dead.
Far as I know, the “responsible owners” are still walking free and probably will remain as such.
Nothing like a good scapegoat dying for your sins.
You have a foul mouth. And don’t tell me what to read.
I’m not sure of the caliber but in a bedroom where my cousin and his friends had been admiring one’s boy’s new pistol, one kid put it on the nightstand and it went off and shot another kid.
He died.
Nobody had hold of the gun...so I reckon you could say it killed all on its own.
My 4th cousin set his rifle down to climb over the fence near a graveyard and the rifle went off and hit him the thigh, back in the 40s.
He bled out in that very dark, very creepy cemetery, alone.
At least one hunter in my area, every season, has a “rogue gun” go off and either wound or kill him.
It happens.
We should ban them.
And when not properly trained they attack mercilessly and without provocation. That elderly man had no chance and neither will your loved one if an unhappy pitbull happens her way.
Hi there.
Fancy meeting you here.
;]
1. Large and/or aggressive breed of dog? Yes. Pit Bulls - bred to fight and ignore submission and keep fighting.
2. Running loose, often >1 running loose? Easily leaped over fence = running loose. Two of them packed up and ready to kill.
3. Prior aggressive behavior by dogs? Yes, they had attacked this guy before, and several other people as well.
4. Unrealistic expectation of gentleness from dogs by owner, often despite #3 above? Yes. She thought it perfectly OK for them to be in a yard they could (and had before) escape at will and to attack people (as they had before).
