In two separate incidents, as many as 15 teens have stormed Chicago Transit Authority buses, attacked their victims and darted off with cell phones and other electronic devices, authorities said Tuesday.
Both incidents were near the University of Illinois at Chicago campus, prompting city and campus authorities to issue community alerts.
In the first attack, near West Roosevelt Road and South Loomis Street at about 11:40 p.m. Saturday, a victim was struck multiple times before the thieves ran off with his cell phone.
About 25 minutes later, near South Racine Avenue and West 13th Street, a student said he was sitting on a No. 12 bus when as many as 15 black boys and young men boarded the bus without paying. The student was hit in the back of his head with a glass bottle and was robbed of his iPod, said UIC police.

Do you / does he know who they are?
You could contact their fathers for redress... /sarc
Unfortunately, urban areas have laws against victims carrying guns. I find an impressive knife works pretty well. Spring-loaded knives are legal in most places.
Mobs depend on helpless victims. Victims who show a willingness and ability to defend themselves to the death (of the perp) generally get left alone.
I suppose knives will be banned next.
Your .45 has a clip?
You probably won’t need the extra mags.
Even if you had only 10 rds,
no one wants to be numbered in “the first ten”.
“prompting city and campus authorities to issue community alerts.”
Yep, that should work. Maybe tack up some little posters on telephone poles; hand out flyers on corners, maybe a public service radio ad or two. You know:
“Warning: FERREL YUTE PACK ZONE. Ferrel yutes are known to travel in uncontrollable packs in this area. Everyone else is strongly advised to vacate this zone and stay out as the police are unable to protect you there. Wandering into this zone is extremely hazardous to your health! Note: it is against the law to arm yourself in any way, and if you are hurt trying to protect yourself in a unauthorized manner in a Ferrel Yute Pack Zone, you WILL be arrested and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. You have been warned.”
There are a lot of defenseless people left. Simply displaying a weapon will deter further problems.
I wonder if a starter gun would be effective at dispersing a mob. It's loud enough to sound like a real gun and the mob wouldn't know it's fake.
Why in the Hell would you carry a fake gun?
They’re entitled.
Ah, the sweet irony that now pesters the “dead fish” Mayor Rahm:

My answers would certainly be perceived as racist, so I’ll reply by FReepmail.
It is unfortunate that “displaying a weapon” is a criminal act in a lot of cases - it’s called “brandishing”.
I don’t know what this ass of a law was intended to prevent,
but the result is that a CCHL holder has to let the situation escalate to the point where you HAVE to shoot and kill your attacker instead of deterring him by displaying your ability to defend yourself.
I think South Carolina has had a problem. Myrtle Beach had at least one incident. Charlotte, Boston and a few other places had them all at the same time. There was concern that they were coordinated attacks.

The question was: What can you do inside a bus when under attack by a flash mob? A gun shot is likely to disperse the mob. A starter pistol may accomplish that without innocent victims and without risk of prosecution. But I wouldn't be surprised if it's illegal to carry a starter pistol in Chicago. LOL!
Sadly, the gangs may be using Facebook, Twitter, and cell phones to coordinate their flash mobs.
What do we as a society do if civilized behavior breaks down in our big cities?
It’s one thing to see ghettos in which civilization has deteriorated, but what about when entire cities or regions become infected?
Should we all move to small town or rural America? Move to an island somewhere?
If entire cities are going to go ghetto, where will we be able to escape to?
But if it occurs on the Gold Coast or the Near North side or State Street, it affects city tax revenue in a big way if high-end, profitable businesses are ransacked, or destroyed....or if they close or move out.
Emanuel is very aware of this. The Chicago business community is now putting enormous pressure on him and the City Council. He's already quietly put around 500 more police on foot on the streets. Folks are reporting seeing them in clusters patrolling the intersections where the perps gather to plan their attacks.
Emanuel may surprise some people with a firmness not found in former Mayor Richie Daley. To keep the peace, Daley just paid off the aldermen and community organizers in the black precincts who in turn paid off the gang leaders to keep things cool.
It's a different ball game now with new and different tactics on the part of the gangs rquiring new and different tactics on the part of a mayor as well as John Law.
The new police head just brought on board is one tough SOB. We shall find out about the mettle of Emanuel and the new police superintendant as both the weather and the unemployed black yutes get hotter in the City of Broad Shoulders.

Nor mine. There are usually several old farts like myself that do not take kindly to some young whippersnappers acting like hooligans.
What you have at Myrtle Beach are two biker weekends, one white (mostly) and one black. The latter has been marked by trashings, drugs and violence for so long that local merchants shutter their businesses and declare a general strike whenever it rolls around. It does not appear to be part of the sudden current urban epidemic.
The use of social media could exacerbate things at Myrtle Beach as it has elsewhere, though.
