Was it a flash mob that forced the closure of North Avenue beach on Memorial Day?
Chicago Police News Affairs released a statement saying they had to close the beach for safety reasons, as people were suffering heat exhaustion and emergency vehicles couldn't get through to help. But, WLS listeners say there was what they called a "large gangbanger element" at the Oak Street and North Avenue beaches.

Listeners report being at the beach, and seeing dozens of gang bangers pushing people off their bikes. Another listener says those causing havoc were not dressed for the beach and looked like "bad elements."
Webster's dictionary defines a flash mob as a group of people summoned (as by e-mail or text message) to a designated location at a specified time to perform an indicated action before dispersing. Flash mobs also can be organized via social media sites. But recently in Chicago, flash mobs have gathered along Michigan Avenue to do anything but entertain.
In January, groups of teens assembled along Michigan Avenue and shoplifted at three separate stores. Eleven teens ranging in age from 14 to 17 were arrested.
Chicago Police are denying that a flash mob intent on causing havoc forced the closure of the North Avenue beach on Memorial Day Monday.
No doubt about the consequence to the cities at all. I’m speaking about the consequences to the looters and the mob.
” With LBJ in office, the rioters thought (correctly, as it turned out) that the mobs could smash, burn and loot without much consequence. “
In all fairness, Bush-The-Elder’s craven response to the “Rodney King Riots” was as bad, if not worse, than anything LBJ did...
I once dictated an arrest report and the typed version came back with a mis-spelling.
I'll never forget the inflection in the typist's voice [she was canadian by birth, and had just a bit of british colombian accent]
"Oh that's not Elroy, that Leroy", raising the note of the first syllable of the second name.[Maybe I just need to cut an mp3 and post it.]
You know, after awhile, all the elroys and leroys start to run together anyway.
God Bless all the Amish!
How true and may come very close to that.
There was violence in several cities over the weekend, all instigated by black gangs. Something not reported in the media. It’s the beginning of the end. Welcome to the Dark ages.
I don’t know that your analogy is apt for today. Look at what happens when anarchist riot so they can have more government and less free market.
The police move gently and grudgingly against them.
Do you think Mayor Rham will ever issue a “shoot to kill arsonists” and “shoot to maim looters” like Old Man Daley did?
If a half dozen anarchist were shot dead by owners or police you’d end their rioting forever. They’re mostly cowards and college brats.
These blacks are very, very angry young men. Prone to incredible violence as a way of life. They no longer respect authority or the police. It’s bad and could still turn worse. I’m not convinced the CPD can handle it.
Don’t kid yourself. Even if the politician can’t think like us, he has people who can. They know what they want to do and their experts tell them how to spin it so that 51% of the voters think its a good idea. It doesn’t always work, but they do a pretty good job a wrapping up a giant steaming pile in pretty paper and a big bow and telling us it’s Christmas.
This was just a case of letting the criminals win because they outnumbered the cops. Civilization gives up ground and the barbarians take it. Spinning it as “too many cases of heat exhaustion” is so laughable that even a democrat teacher wouldn’t fall for it. This is one of those Baghdad Bob moments.
You’ve made my point. The electorate in 1968 felt that the liberals (LBJ, Humphrey, et al) coddled the lawbreakers. Nixon was elected partly as a result, IMO.
Well stated.
I was present for what I believe to have been the last "Annual Virginia Beach Riot".
In 1989.
After that, VB made it clear that the urban black "fraternities" from NY, NJ, Philadelphia were NOT WELCOME ... and the organized events catering to them were canceled.
I have since moved away, but I believe they no longer have riots.
A law and order presidential candidate for 2012 won’t help Chicago today. That’s my point.
Plus, Nixon didn’t make things better did he? I mean in the general sense. He gave us Carter and Democrat majorities. Shall I continue the list?
Excellent post. BTTT.
“. . .There appears to be a growing lack of a moral code, lack of respect for others, lack of respect for the law and for those who have been authorized to uphold it, and a general lack of respect for life. We have big problems.”
Not too surprising if you read the Bible:
“And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice, they are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, without understanding, unloving, unmerciful, and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.” Romans 1: 28-32. (I should note that the “they” referred to here refers to ALL humans.
Add Miami to the list. Several were killed and injured in an annual thug event known as "Urban Beach Week" which coincides with Memorial Weekend.
My wife and I had the grave misfortune of visiting South Beach one year during this travesty. Needless to say I'm not surprised that people who show up to this sometimes get killed.
Another Rampaging Amish Youth story?
Specifically, Nixon's election signaled the end of the 60s urban race riots. Whether his election was the cause of that, or just then general political climate is of course debatable.
He (Nixon) gave us Carter and Democrat majorities.
I suggest that it was not so much Nixon that caused that as much as it was a State-Run Media sponsored coup de'tat, also known as Watergate.
Your argument is very persuasive.
So went Detroit so goes Chicago....
Get while the gettins good.
