Specifically, Nixon's election signaled the end of the 60s urban race riots. Whether his election was the cause of that, or just then general political climate is of course debatable.

I suggest that it was not so much Nixon that caused that as much as it was a State-Run Media sponsored coup de'tat, also known as Watergate.
But yet, in 1980, was elected what would become the “great communicator”, a special era indeed.
