Southeast students served raw onions as snack
Washington Examiner ^ | 5/26/11 | Lisa Gartner

No matter how you slice it, the days of milk and cookies are long gone as schools aim to provide students with healthy fruits and vegetables as snacks.

But raw onions?

That's what several classes of students at Southeast's Turner Elementary were fed Tuesday, instead of the zucchini slices the school's food provider, Chartwells, said it would serve as part of a federal initiative to provide healthy food to young learners.

BTW, make the rue with sweet butter and wholewheat flour, then add the sweet milk, slowly, stirring constantly.

So it’s basically simple gravy with lots of fresh ground black pepper. I love black pepper, can hardly eat without it.

In high school I used to eat peanut butter and pickle sandwiches, preferably on rye. Yum!

Kind of reminds me of this song:

The lyrics to "Junk Food Junkie" have held up extremely well. All of the junk food referenced in the song (Dr. Pepper, Ding Dongs, Colonel Sanders, Hostess Twinkies, Big Macs, Moon Pies, Fritos, Pringles) is still very much with us. The sanctimoniousness of the new age/healthy eating crowd is also still with us.

Speaking of pickles, for years my favorite late night snack was sweet gherkins, seriously sharp cheddar cheese, and an ice cold Pepsi or heady, cold Ruby Port. ... Hmmm, I think I've got those in the fridge right now! See y'all

Standard white milk gravy (or as the french say bechamel) with cracked pepper to suit. I make my bechamel 1tbs butter, 1tbs flour, and one cup milk. I might use bacon drippings or sausage drippings and lower the butter content if I have them.

labor camps in the East.

Oh no, not labor camps in the East!
They don’t serve onions there,
only pictures of onions...

"They’re prolly serving the raw onions with a side of pintos and cornbread. Delicious."

Add some pickled yellow chilies and you have a four course feast for a king!

Finish with a desert of cornbread with honey and a cup of boiled coffee...

I used to get a Nutty Buddy for 15 cents at snack time when I was a kid.

Would sometimes go for the Push-up, but nothing better in this word than the last soggy-coned bite of a Nutty Buddy.

When I was growing up we’d have fried onions with ketchup sandwiches at least twice a week. Most of the time lunches consisted of either peanut butter and jelly or peanut butter and banana sandwiches. Sodas were a treat. My dad would send me down to the store on my bike to buy a soda for everyone.

I was just responding to the poster that mentioned Reagan and ketchup being a vegetable. Don’t be so uptight. Culinary arts can call them whatever they want, I don’t care. Classify them as kumquats if you want.

...living off kraft dinner seasoned with sardines. Heck, students get to thinking they could live the rest of their life that way!

You say that like it's bad or something.
