Its a bummer. Perry has been very effective in KILLING the more conservative stuff before it gets to his desk, by using surrogates in the state legislature. In fact, he allowed a liberal to run the State House, even though we have a greater-than two to one majority over there...he could have pressed for a more representative leader...but didnt seem to be interested.
Give the Republican majority in our State House and Senate, we should have turned this state into a right-wing utopia by now...but a certain governor did not really have that as an objective - rather he more wanted to sign a few token token pieces of legislation and be able to say the big stuff (like Arizona-type immigration laws, taking on the unions, taking on Big Education, for example) never made it to his desk...just conveniently died in the legislature...
Thanks for your comments. I saw Governor Perry on Greta the other night and did like what he said. However, I want to learn more about Governor Perry. I heard Rush seems to favor him, and Rush made the comment that the GOP elite “inside the beltway” Republicans don't like Perry. That just made me want to hear more from Texas Freepers about how they feel about Rick Perry running for President.
Doing a Texas Freeper Ping to see more comments from Texans.
As always, if you wish to be off my Texas Freeper ping list, just let me know through FreepMail. Thanks!
DewCrist and Straus are also really good at shafting conservatives
With that being said, I wonder if I will be zotted for this statement. Have the FR big wigs deemed Perry taboo yet?

I’m a Texas Freeper, and I concur with BobL. We’ve damn near got a Republican super-majority in the state House, but Perry’s done nothing to push them to send him the sort of legislation that Texans have demanded.
Another legislative session is about to close, and we still don’t have a bill that would close the door on illegal immigration. Perry could have (and should have) made that one of this session’s top priorities, but he didn’t.
Perry will talk the talk when it benefits him politically, but when it’s time to walk the walk, he’s got his feet kicked up. Disgusting....
I have to say that Rick Perry is NOT a Conservative. I’ll be the first to admit that Texas has prospered under Perry, relative to the rest of the USA, but I can’t say whether that was because of him, or in spite of him. He’s way down on my list of preferred Republican candidates, although if he ever becomes the nominated Pubbie, I will then support him.
Thanks for the ping! On balance Rick Perry is a good man and a competent governor. More conservative than not, he would be a good choice for president OR vice president. He can be fiery when he wants to be and is a cut or two above “W” in speechifying. All in all, we could do worse, a LOT worse.
Perry talks a good game and will support conservative principles when it’s the populist thing to do.
Back when Al Gore was running for president in 1988, Perry was a Democrat and Gore’s state campaign chairman. Gore was pretending to be a southern “conservative” Democrat.
Perry is along the same lines. He’s somewhere to the right of the Bush family (which doesn’t like him) but he’s not a conservative.
He is relatively tuned in to political winds though. If being conservative will get him elected, that’s what he will be. If he had been Governor of Massachusetts, his credentials would likely resemble RINO Romney. That wouldn’t fly in Texas so Perry has tilted right.
Would he be better than Obama as prez? Of course.
Is Perry politically astute enough to win the GOP nomination? Sure.
If he won, would he be more conservative than either Bush in the White House? Absolutely.
Would he be the best voice for conservatism in 2012? No.
Of those with a realistic chance of getting the GOP nomination, I’d rank Perry just behind Palin among the current field.
FWIW, a Palin/Perry ticket or a Perry/Rubio ticket would crush the Dems next year. Can’t say the same about any of the other potential combinations out there.
Yes, there are flaws (particularly immigration issues and the Trans-Texas corridor fiasco). But none of the candidates walk on water and the perfect should not become the enemy of the good.
I also pledged to always give Gov. Perry, for all of his faults, props for cracking down on the Chicken D's who ran to Oklahoma in 2003 over the redistricting battle. That is the day he won his stripes from me.
I don't think he'd make a particularly good President though.

I want him voted out of office as Governor. Why would I want to vote him in as POTUS?
In my book he is nothing more than a party swapping, go the way the wind blows progressive Republican. If you look up "political expediency" you get a picture of him as a result.
The only way he has kept his office this long is because people worse than him run against him.
Here, here, and here for a quickly put together series of replies.
No, Mr. Goodhair is not for me. In the end, look into the man yourself (don't look at his campaign sites as those will naturally be glowing endorsements) and make your own decision.
His position on the Trans-Texas Corridor, signing the bill for in State tuition for illegal aliens, his wishy-washy border attitude and the HPV vaccination mandated for girls are some of the worst things he's done.
And the most glaring hit on him was this just today...
...he doesn't appear able to grasp the most elemental concepts of America's form of government
Most of the opposition to Perry comes from one issue mushheads or folks who don’t understand how our state government works. He has been a Great Governor and that’s why he keeps getting re-elected by the good folks of this great state. BTW..he is a Veteran (C-130 pilot)so he wouldn’t have to be taught to salute....
You have to push Perry to the wall.
Texas has the best economy of any state and you have to give credit where credit is due.
I'll say it again, in the end it will be Palin & Perry teaming up.
Mark Levin has had fill-in hosts this week, but the one last night had been impressed with Perry until his started getting Texas callers. Not one was a positive for Perry.
I tend to think if we keep nit-picking we will end up with more of what we already have. After every candidate suggested, we get the inevitable, “well but...”
We are going to “but” ourselves right back into four more years of the one and completely lose our country. There is no candidate that walks on water. I disapproved of some of the things Ronald Reagan did while in office, although I consider him the greatest President in my lifetime and would clone him in a heartbeat if it were possible.
The LT gov has more power in the legislature than the gov does. It sucks, but that is the truth.
My comment when someone suggests that Perry would make a good Prez usually starts with “Noooooooo!”.
I would be very surprised if he actually runs. I think he likes being considered candidadential, but I think there may be a bit too much baggage for him to run.
Perry is a RINO plain and simple. He’s a good conservative when he’s running for office, but thats about it. Google Perry and Arizona and see what you find.
We call him Governor Good Hair.
Perry used to be a ‘Rat years ago. He still has ‘Rat inclinations. He’s tried to sell out Texas farmers to Spanish business interests for a toll road from Mexico.
But on the whole, he’s more of a conservative and libetarian than most of them currently in the race, the sane ones, anyway. AND, he is able to use the word “Secession” in a sentence describing what States can do if oppressed by the federal government.
He does have charisma, too. If it came down to a choice between him and Cain, I would have to really think about it. With most of the rest of them, it would be Perry, no hesitation. Rick Santorum would be the only other real hesitation for me. He’s the man who should be president, IMO, I just don’t know if he has the charisma to get it done.
Please see Post #150.
Most of those yammering for Perry are outside of Texas. He looks better from afar.
I’d vote for Yosemite Sam to get Obama out of office, but Perry would be a hold-your-nose choice.
