Maybe Texas Gov. Rick Perry said hes decided to test the waters on a presidential run just because hes feels left out.
For all the attention paid to the presidential possibilities of two members of the House (Paul Ryan and Michele Bachmann) and a reality show host (you know who), youd never know that the Republicans had on their bench the three-term governor of the state with the nations best economy and the largest Republican population.
But for some reason, when Perry told people he wasnt running, reporters believed him. If Chris Christie even flies over Iowa, the blogosphere goes into meltdown mode, but the political press for some reason mostly took Perry at his word.
It seems strange that they would have.
Perry, who has been governor for more than a decade, is a favorite of the Tea Party movement for his tough stands on state sovereignty, border security, taxes and gun rights. Anybody who packs heat when he jogs so he can blow away coyotes that mess with his Labrador retriever and hangs out with Ted Nugent at a Tax Day rally is going to have serious street cred with the Republican base.
As the Perry talk heats up, these primary election positives will be reinforced by liberals who find his Texas-fried politics to be repellant. Every time Democratic cable news talkers remind viewers that Perry once warned that Texas might secede from the union if Washington kept piling on new federal powers, somewhere in Iowa or South Carolina a Republican primary voter thinks, Not bad. When Perry gets chided for declining photo-ops with President Obama on visits to the state, somewhere in New Hampshire a guy...

Agree
Its a bummer. Perry has been very effective in KILLING the more conservative stuff before it gets to his desk, by using surrogates in the state legislature. In fact, he allowed a liberal to run the State House, even though we have a greater-than two to one majority over there...he could have pressed for a more representative leader...but didnt seem to be interested.
Give the Republican majority in our State House and Senate, we should have turned this state into a right-wing utopia by now...but a certain governor did not really have that as an objective - rather he more wanted to sign a few token token pieces of legislation and be able to say the big stuff (like Arizona-type immigration laws, taking on the unions, taking on Big Education, for example) never made it to his desk...just conveniently died in the legislature...
Thanks for your comments. I saw Governor Perry on Greta the other night and did like what he said. However, I want to learn more about Governor Perry. I heard Rush seems to favor him, and Rush made the comment that the GOP elite “inside the beltway” Republicans don't like Perry. That just made me want to hear more from Texas Freepers about how they feel about Rick Perry running for President.
Doing a Texas Freeper Ping to see more comments from Texans.
As always, if you wish to be off my Texas Freeper ping list, just let me know through FreepMail. Thanks!
the RinoCrat Oligarchy is basically running down the list...trying to decide who they can “accept”
Anything but whomever the peons and peasants choose...
Thanks Bob, I’ve just in the last couple of days starting paying attention to the Perry chatter. One thing that really stands out is the number of Texas freepers who don’t like him, I mean REALLY DON’T LIKE HIM.
Needed to make myself clearer:
“we need a president with rock-solid conservative principles that is unafraid of controversy.”
Sounds like Congressman Allen West to me!
No
Perry has FAKED being pro border security for years... but what he has done is mostly smoke and mirrors... Perry has been the PRIMARY advocate for the Trans Texas Ripoff... a highway to hell for Texas land owners and tax payers... plus this was the biggest boondoggle for allowing unregulated Mexican trucks to enter the USA with van loads of illegal aliens... Pretty Boy Perry is a FAKE... pretending to be Tea Party, pro border security WHEN HE IS NONE of those things...
I have lived in Texas my entire life, including all 10 years of his governorship and many people have not liked him for a long time, maybe 8 years. Yet the man keeps getting re-elected.
I believe people just generally don’t like established politicians and most people dislike him for one reason or another or they claim he is a “sleazy politician” without giving anything specific. Those same people probably agree with 80-90% of what he’s done. He’s probably no different than 99% of other politicians in that way, but that doesn’t mean that he hasn’t governed effectively. Texas has done quite well through 9/11, a couple of recessions, and 1,200 mile border war under his watch. I’m not saying he’s responsible, but I would say that he has done far better than most governors at maintaining a friendly business environment.
The Texas governor actually is a very weak governor anyways. The legislature only meets every 2 years and the liutenant governor actually wields more power in what legislation gets to the floor for a vote. For example, Lt. Governor David Dewhurst pretty much just squashed the anti-TSA groping bill at the last minute behind the scenes. Bottom line, he’s done an above-average to great job, hence why he has been re-elected twice, TWICE. Everyone is going to find something they don’t like with any politician, especially one that’s been in office for 10 years, but I would say again I can’t disagree with much
All of us don’t agree with bobl and all I have to say to any Okie, Don’t Mess With Texas.
The reality in Texas is that the governor has very little control over the Legislature, leadership or Bills. It was set up that way.
Having lived through a number of Texas dem and GOP Governors, show me one other that has proven more “net” Conservative than Gov. Goodhair. One things for damn sure, Perry is night and day more Conservative than nobama.
Whether or not he’s Prez material needs to be prove Yay or Nay.
Thanks for the post, I’ve been particularly interested in what Texas freepers have to say about Perry.
I will say one thing: Jesus Christ is coming back... nobody knows when... let’s assume, for argument sake, he is among us now. With over 6 billion people in this world, and I can only rule out myself, chances are he is not going to be one of the about 8 people running for POTUS in 2012. My point is, some of you seem to be hoping for some kind of savior, but we are about 99.999999% likely to have to unite behind” acceptable”. Perry might fit the bill. Worth hearing out if nothing else. I am a Virginia guy and have the exact same opinions of Bob McDonnell as these Texas folks have of Perry. They are all politicians. Either are preferable to Zero... neither are “ great”
DewCrist and Straus are also really good at shafting conservatives
“The new Fox flavor of the week?”
Daily specials now, apparently.
So you smell the fear as well?
Right on. I find it funny that people dislike Perry. Texas is about to become the largest economy in the U.S., which by the way makes the Texas economy bigger than probably 90% of entire countries on the planet. Unemployment is comparatively lower than other states. There is no state income tax, granted this is by no reason of Perry’s, it’s constitutional law in Texas. People complain about property taxes being high and want to blame Perry, but you can look at all 50 states and the overall tax burden in Texas is very low.
Probably the biggest dislike people have of Perry was the Trans Texas Corridor, which got thrown in the trash can after so much uproar, mainly about using eminent domain laws to built a massive highway from Mexico across Texas and eventually to Canada. I can’t say it was a great idea, but it’s not like Perry is out there trying to continually defend it like Romney does with his commy-care law.
In short, there isn’t a lot that Obama or anyone else could criticize Perry on. Oh and by the way, Texas just became the first state in probably 50 years to actually CUT spending. Not reduce the rate of growth, but actually spend less than they spent last year.
Palinistas, better learn to like Perry as he has a great shot at being her VP candidate. By the way, I will be voting Palin over Perry if both run, but I like both.
Your point is well taken. I don’t have any problem with Perry at all at this point. I still have alot to learn about him, I’m nowhere near up to speed. I’ve read both positive and negative. I’ll keep an open mind as I learn more.
I do like the fact that he is the Governor of a large, successful state. I get the impression that his pro-life and pro-2nd Amendment credentials are solid as well as his support of DOMA and his opposition to embryonic stem cell research.
Just wondering, but exactly who should he have supported? It’s not like there was an army of conservatives running in 08’.
