Awkward Moment During Obama Toast to Queen
May 24, 2011 5:32 PM
The president and the orchestra at Buckingham Palace this evening were a bit out of synch.
When the president toasted the Queen the orchestra misunderstood a pause and what seemed to be a cue from the president for God Save the Queen to begin playing.
Ladies and gentlemen please stand with me and raise your glasses as I propose a toast, the president said, putting down his note cards and grabbing his glass. To her majesty the Queen.
The president paused, the guests stood, and the orchestra prepared to play.
But the president wasnt done speaking.
The vitality the president said before the orchestra began.
Then the familiar tune you might know it better as My Country Tis of Thee started up.
The president kept going: -- of the special relationship between our peoples and for the words of Shakespeare to this blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England, the president said as the awkward moment played out.
The Queen looked ahead as the UK anthem played.
To the Queen, the president finally said.
He lifted his glass to her, she smiled a bit uncomfortably.
But because the song was playing, no one drank from his or her glass, including the president, who put his glass down on the table.

Aren’t there people in the Ubama regime who are supposed to handle this stuff?
The incompetence of this White House from top to bottom is far worse than merely embarrassing. It’s downright frightening.
My question is how did this guy get the visit to Ireland days after the Queen, a State Dinner, and a visit to empty Westminster Cathedral and a chat with the Royal newlyweds, when he was snubbed for the wedding three weeks ago?
This guy has no brain - he can’t even remember a short toast? And still screws things up.
It could have been worse. He could have said:
Through the lips, over the tongue -
look out liver, here it comes.
How about “Smacked Ass”?
Like everything Øbama does he’s trying to rewrite history.
You can take the president out of the ghetto, but you can’t take the ghetto out of the president.
“Grace... either you have it or you don’t; you can’t get grace.” (Or class.)
O Lord, how long is this cretin going to embarrass us?
“Huge capital letters on his first/last name denote his over-sized ego”
Really; that’s a fact, per handwriting experts. The audacious signature is a sign of an affected Narcissist. I had a boss whose official “signature” was a huge “Z” although none of her names began with Z. Same personality type as Hussein, and non-Christian. Had a mini-Stonehenge in a position of prominence in her office. Creeped me out.
“The QUEEN has to tell him to set it down...”
I’ll bet Hussein is the first U.S. president to have been spanked by Israel’s Prime Minister and England’s Queen in the very same week. LOL!
Sadly, there is Obama version 1, with complete teleprompter system, and Obama version 2, which bumbles along with any speech. One would be a five-star performance....one would be a one-star performance. Kind of reminds you of the comparison between Richard Burton and some soap opera star on One Life to Live who gazes toward a teleprompter to speak his parts to Nurse Wanda.
It is about the freakiest signature I’ve ever seen. It also looks somewhat frightening or vulgar, in more ways than one.
Trust the BBC to cover. “The string orchestra of the Scots Guard mistakenly began playing the British national anthem before the president had finished his address during a banquet at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday night.” http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-13537972
My husband is in the military and as a veteran of many formal diplomatic occasions we are well aware that there are certain protocols that vary with the situation and the country and we are always aware of what to do and what not to do.
It isn’t difficult. If a lowly military officer knows the protocols certainly the President should know them.
He just doesn’t give a damn and thinks he’s so much smarter than everyone else. The look on his face, however, when he realized his gaffe, was priceless. Unfortunately everyone else in the room politely averted their eyes from his crash and burn and didn’t get the full evil effect.
My favorite part...the look on his face after the Queen told him, “Set it down”.
This clown can hardly breath without a TOTUS or cue cards.
Geez, talk about constant diplomatic and etiquette faux pas. All of it was embaressing, cue cards, speaking over the anthem, not having a clue. He really needs to be here acting like he gives a darn about his citizens. I have no doubt his hosts are thinking the same thing.
Something tells me his ego thought the orchestra was adding some drama and flair to his toast with the music to toast, because after all, it is about him and his greatness /S. Geez.
Barry's whole claim to fame was ONE SPEECH he gave in 2004 that he didn't flub. In the seven years since he can't even get one right with a teleprompter, or in this case, note cards. And when speaking 'off the cuff' he comes across as a blithering idiot.
So it's no wonder that all his college records are 'state secrets'. If released they'd likely show he barely passed his courses. And only did 'pass' thanks to a grading curve (aka: Affirmative Action).

I know what mine is. But like Groucho Marx said:
"I'd never join a club that would have me as a member" ;-)
Before the wedding, the WH released some info about this trip to the UK, it almost seemed like it was a way to show Obama was not snubbed druing the wedding, since he was going there later anyway.
He looks like a little boy who has been reprimanded. What a maroon!
Barry and Michelle's whirlwind tour.
