St. Anthony's High School in Long Island bars lesbian student from bringing female date to prom

St. Anthony's High School

A Long Island Catholic high school senior barred from bringing her ex-girlfriend to the prom can come by herself, find a male date - or just stay home.

Angelina Lange, 17, of Bay Shore, was turned down by St. Anthony's High School administrators when she asked about a same-sex couple attending the annual event.

Brother Gary Cregan, principal of the Roman Catholic school, said the decision was nothing personal - just a reflection of the school's religious tenets.

"Our Catholic faith specifies that marriage involve a man and a woman, and our policies on dating must reflect that," Cregan told MSNBC.com. "We mean no malice or disrespect."

Lange, a good student who transferred into St. Anthony's as a junior, isn't challenging the school's decision - not that she would have much leverage.

As a private institution, St. Anthony's can enforce its own restrictions on school events. But local gay rights activist James Fallarino told MSNBC.com that the decision was wrong-headed.

"The message is that the school doesn't really care about its students, and that's not a good message," said Fallarino, of the Long Island Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Services Network.

How about this: NO Proms. NO formals. NO homecomings. Period.

I’d be fine with that. Make the school an institution of education, and let the students socialize on their own time. If there’s a demand for teenage social dancing events, the community will provide them, either pro-bono or for profit.

No, the message is WE DON'T WANT YOUR LBGTQRHSTS in our faces.

It's a private Catholic School for goodness sakes!!

Does the school receive any federal dollars?

The message is that the school will follow the teachings of the Holy Church. I wonder why they can’t understand that.

Eric Holder's Justice Department lawyers are descending upon the High School as we speak...

This time every year we see a litany of pathetic articles about poor kids who can’t go to the prom or walk at graduation for some reason, usually for breaking some rule or another. For my part, I go by what my mother always told me: obey the law, or you’ll go to prison and be raped. Or, in these cases, obey the rules, or you won’t go to the prom.

I don’t know of any Federal dollars going to any Catholic primary or secondary school. Unless I hear differently...?

"The message is that the school doesn't really care about its students, and that's not a good message,"

Or, maybe the school cares a great deal for their students, and that IS a good message. Sometimes saying NO to your child (or student) is the best thing you can do for them.

Of course they care about the kids, to the point of taking a brave stand for their long-term spiritual welfare! Idolators, thieves and homosexuals will not inherit the Kingdom of God. How clear is that?

From what I read, the student gets it, but the LGBTQRFGTRD (they have a really long name now) doesn’t.

Which is exactly why these parents WILL NOT send them to a public school!

Had she just quietly shown up with her date, no problem. Mouthing off about it, daring the powers that be to react, got her banned.

Respectfully, I do not think so, given the principal’s comment. If she had shown up with her “date,” they would have been asked to leave, quietly. And really, that would have likewise been the considerate method displayed herein. It’s good to find that she is being adult about it. It would be better still if she would consider recanting on the same sex attraction, in favor of Church teachings. If she’s at a private Catholic High School, it’s likely that she at least professes Catholicism. Needs some prayerful reflection.

I went to High School in the 50’s, back then girls couldn’t graduate if you were pregnant. When they started showing thy started leaving. Their diploma’s were sent home in the mail if they finished their studies.
