New Insect Repellant May Be Thousands of Times Stronger Than DEET
Science Daily ^ | May 9, 2011 | Staff

Imagine an insect repellant that not only is thousands of times more effective than DEET -- the active ingredient in most commercial mosquito repellants -- but also works against all types of insects, including flies, moths and ants.

That possibility has been created by the discovery of a new class of insect repellant made in the laboratory of Vanderbilt Professor of Biological Sciences and Pharmacology Laurence Zwiebel and reported this week in the online Early Edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"It wasn't something we set out to find," said David Rinker, a graduate student who performed the study in collaboration with graduate student Gregory Pask and post-doctoral fellow Patrick Jones. "It was an anomaly that we noticed in our tests."

The tests were conducted as part of a major interdisciplinary research project to develop new ways to control the spread of malaria by disrupting a mosquito's sense of smell supported by the Grand Challenges in Global Health Initiative funded by the Foundation for the NIH through a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

"It's too soon to determine whether this specific compound can act as the basis of a commercial product," Zwiebel cautioned. "But it is the first of its kind and, as such, can be used to develop other similar compounds that have characteristics appropriate for commercialization."

The discovery of this new class of repellant is based on insights that scientists have gained about the basic nature of the insect's sense of smell in the last few years. Although the mosquito's olfactory system is housed in its antennae, 10 years ago biologists thought that it worked in the same way at the molecular level as it does in mammals.

Libs favor policies that make them feel good about themselves, it doesn’t go any deeper than that.

They profess to “care” because that makes them feel good about themselves,
and the ban harmful chemicals because that makes them feel good about themselves.

They are entirely consistent within their worldview.

Hey, sounds like, if you did this on a embryonic level, you could make a human that was naturally repellent of insects.

“Let’s invite Fred to our BBQ! He keeps the bugs away good!”

One scientist mentioned that overuse may turn you into a “chaz” but did not elaborate.

I want it.

They love me. As I get older, my ‘bug magnet’ is stronger and the effects of the bites are stronger. Many times I have had to run into the house to slather Benadryl gel over my arms & legs.

I buy a spray with the highest DEET concentration I can find. Wearing long sleeves and long pants is not an option. Not in the southern summers. I love being outside; staying in the house is not an option.

I hope they are able to get something to market (the sooner, the better).

Liberals are very fond of wind turbines (”clean, renewable energy”), which kill thousands of bats and birds, which are natural controls on insects.

A miracle of science. Reflected light from Helen Thomas has been reconfigured into a molecule.

That’s what I’m saying - they never “think beyond stage one” as Thomas Sowell puts it.

They stop examining any issue exactly at the point where they feel good about themselves.

But he's too cranky right now

Give what you can
Or donate monthly, and a sponsoring FReeper will contribute $10

Good way of putting it.

It thusly means, 1) they are totally self obsessed, and, 2) it is about "feeling," i.e. a completely emotional reaction.

How about those Obama and Pelosi characters?

Do you only
Care about the bleeding crowd?

They aren't "libs" as in the "sheeperals"...
They are Marxists. They use the "depth of thinking" of the sheeperals to gain power to implement their Marxism, and the sheeperals will defend them to their own deaths because putting the Marxists in power proves that they are "good people", and they'll die rather than give up that belief.

As Rush said today, if any leftist were honest about what s/he wanted to do in office, s/he'd get 30% of the vote.

Yes, it's a brand name. Here is a link to the manufacturer and the product. If you search around you might find the product sold in health food stores or something like that

Cactus Juice

The Desert Spring Total Body lotion has a nice, pleasant fragrance and seems to work wonders in keeping mosquitos away..........Try it, if it doesn't work against the bugs, at least your skin will feel smooth and you'll smell nice......LOL!
