For a few years I have discussed the potential of a higher education bubble and the fallout it will have on the housing market. Logically you would assume that young adults with back breaking amounts of student loan debt would have a harder time taking on another giant commitment through a 30 year mortgage. At the very least this would stifle home sales from young households given that the vast majority of mortgage originations are now stemming from government backed sources that require income verification. Even with ultra low down payment programs like loans backed by the FHA many people are still struggling with the idea of saddling debt on top of already large piles of debt like a poorly played hand of Jenga. We already know housing was a bubble and we are dealing with the ramifications of the pop back in 2007. Yet the higher education bubble keeps moving higher and higher. I think viewing a chart of California home prices and the University of California tuition over the years might shed a bit of perspective here.

Government contracts and grants constituted around 17% of budget revenues, and the amount of money available to granting agencies is shrinking, so this source of revenue will likely be reduced. ~25% of revenues came from the UC medical system, and under Obamacare that is likely to shrink.
Bottom line - unsustainable.
Here’s to hoping it detonates spectacularly and throws most ivory tower academics out of work.

College has now become an extension of high school. High school educations that are now the equivalent of a 8th grade level and college educations that equal a 1965 high school education.

Weren’t college tuitions in the CA system back then heavily subsidized making the much lower for the student ( and more expensive for the tax payer) making this comparison questionable? I believe the subsidies are reduced during the ‘90’s

I believe the tuitions at the UC’s and the CSU’s are still heavily subsidized. Does anyone have a breakdown of the California State taxes?

However, what is the ratio of Engineering and scientific degrees to nothing but Crap!
It would be interesting to compare the characteristics of the UC workforce in 1980 to today. Specifically, the ratio of administrators to faculty and the average faculty course load.
Who’d want to go to a quality school like UC Santa Cruz?
