Government contracts and grants constituted around 17% of budget revenues, and the amount of money available to granting agencies is shrinking, so this source of revenue will likely be reduced. ~25% of revenues came from the UC medical system, and under Obamacare that is likely to shrink.
Bottom line - unsustainable.
Here’s to hoping it detonates spectacularly and throws most ivory tower academics out of work.

College has now become an extension of high school. High school educations that are now the equivalent of a 8th grade level and college educations that equal a 1965 high school education.

Weren’t college tuitions in the CA system back then heavily subsidized making the much lower for the student ( and more expensive for the tax payer) making this comparison questionable? I believe the subsidies are reduced during the ‘90’s

It would be interesting to compare the characteristics of the UC workforce in 1980 to today. Specifically, the ratio of administrators to faculty and the average faculty course load.
