Yesterday was a sad day for Free Republic
May 3, 2011 | Huck

Posted on 05/03/2011 4:46:53 AM PDT by Huck

Yesterday should have been a glorious day around here. There should have been fireworks and celebration. There should have been somber remembrances. There should have been patriotic tributes. There should have been shared joy at the news that our guys had finally gotten Bin Laden.

Instead, when I visited the site, what I found was a lot of carping. I found people focused more on the political spin than on the great news. I found people transferring their birther mentality onto this event, talking about Obama faking this news, photoshopping information, etc. It wasn't everybody, but it was a LOT of people. It made me sick.

Yesterday Free Republic seemed like DU. It makes me wonder what the hell is going on. Are Freepers getting younger? I always assume that DU is so pathetically immature because they must be younger. Free Republic has always been a place dominated by great class, and wit, and decency. Not this time. What I saw yesterday was a pathetic embarrassment and totally unworthy of this great forum.

As some of you may know, I was in lower Manhattan on 9-11. I was just across the street from the WTC when the first plane hit. I still remember the beautiful clear blue sky that day. I remember walking in between the towers just a minute or so before 8:46am, on my normal route to work. I remember my co-workers screaming in panic when they watched from an office window as the second plane hit the south tower. I remember women crying and screaming hysterically. I remember not being able to contact my wife to tell her I was OK. I remember people jumping to their deaths. I remember seeing the north tower go down with my own eyes, hearing it with my own ears. I remember fleeing Manhattan. I remember it was a Tuesday.

I remember returning to work the following Monday, riding the ferry passed the site, noxious smoke still billowing from the wreckage. I remember armed troops on the sidewalks. I remember wearing a breathing mask inside my building because the foul odor was seeping in through the ventilation system. I remember thinking we'd really gotten kicked in the teeth. They had killed innocent people, they had traumatized our women and children, and I really wanted revenge. I hung a picture on my wall of the American eagle sharpening his talons.

It has been a long time since that day. It's hard to believe how fast time flies. Then again, if you lost your loved one, I imagine time hasn't gone so fast. I love my wife so much, I can empathize with anyone who has lost the one they love. I can't imagine how that would be, and don't want to know, but I can cry for those people because I know what it is like to find your one true love.

I'm not an Obama fan. I hate socialism. But I am so happy that Bin Laden is killed, and that we have exacted some real revenge. It's about time. The politics don't even play into it for me. I still have the little flag, now tattered, that I flew on my car antenna after 9-11. I want to take it out of storage and put it on my car. I want to see American flags on cars like we saw back then. But it's not going to happen, and partially because the normally patriotic conservatives such as the ones here on Free Republic are instead focused on the politics and the fact that a socialist Democrat was president and will get some of the credit.

I guess you all would have been pissed on D-Day too. FDR was as big a socialist as anyone. I guess VE day and VJ day would have chapped your hides, since Truman was a DEM. I don't mean to paint with a broad brush. I know it wasn't every Freeper acting this way. But when I went on the board, that was the general impression, and it was really disappointing. It should have been a great day here. Instead, I saw a lack of patriotism and a lack of class. Free Republic should be better than this. If conservatives lose their patriotism and class, then what will happen to those virtues? I hope we can get them back soon. In the meantime, thanks for reading.

Respectfully,

Huck

“Point is the meat of this can be processed pretty quickly”

Of that we disagree and is the point of my posts to you.

Cheers, and see you around. . .

As a LOT of us Freepers are Christian...

Proverbs 24:17 (KJV)

Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth:

Job 31:29-30 (NASB)

“Have I rejoiced at the extinction of my enemy,
Or exulted when evil befell him?

“No, I have not allowed my mouth to sin
By asking for his life in a curse.

And WHY is his father's race listed as AFRICAN?

That is a CONTINENT - not a RACE!

If this would have occurred on Bush's watch, the celebration and talking up Bush would have went on for weeks or months....years..

And deservedly so.

See, that's the whole point. President Bush didn't get elected by trashing the occasional need for warfare. He acknowledged it. He didn't get elected by promising to close Gitmo. He explained the need for it. He didn't get elected by saying he would prosecute our military personnel for war crimes. He heaped praise on them.

Ubama is a fraud and a cheat and a liar and the fact that he made one good decision is not enough reason to shower him with accolades. He's Commander-in-Chief for petes sake. He's SUPPOSED to make decisons like this.

The fact that everyone claps and cheers for him like a little baby who just went potty by himself for the first time only serves to underscore how anemic his efforts to battle terrorism have been up to this point.

So, yeah, we're happy bin Laden is dead but we're not going to pat Obama's head and rub his tummy just because he didn't poop on the carpet for once.

And besides, I'm hearing a lot of criticism for the lack of appreciation expressed for our men and women in uniform but the criticizers don't seem to be doing a whole lot of that themselves.

So, here. Allow me.

Ooh-rah! Marines! Hoo-ah Soldiers! You rock Sailors! Kick some tail, Airmen! Thank you for all you do, all you've done and all you're going to do to keep this country safe. Even for the crybabies.

This is not new. The short form COLB, the data from which is supposed to be taken from the long form COLB, also said “African”. “Black” is not a race it is a color. And he wasn’t “African-American” because he was never American. ;)

But it didn't. Woulda, coulda shoulda...

You can pretend it did, cry and whine about it, mock others, or throw yourself a party..

But in the end, you'll have to deal with the fact it didn't occur during his watch.

I came on looking for somewhere to post, but there were no celebratory threads that I could find. Maybe you can show me one that you posted on that I missed.

There were plenty of them, and if you didn't see one to your liking, you should have started a vanity, like you did today.

The fact of the matter is that our party was spoiled when Obama pissed in the punch.

That happened within minutes of the leak that Osama had been killed. Obama took to the airwaves to heap praise upon himself (something he should have left to others) and then to heap scorn upon Bush and his administration. He apparently delayed the announcement until his campaign cronies had awakened all his campaign workers from their drug induced comas to meet in front of the White House armed with Obama re-election posters to cheer on their Messiah.

Yes it was a sad day for Free Republic. The glory that belonged to the American People (all the American People) was glory hogged by the Messiah and it made me sick. But not sick enough to heap scorn on my fellow freepers for their ingrained cynicism. That cynicism is the result of Obama prevaricating on every trivial matter he has spoken on since illegally taking the oath of office.:-)

Who cares what Obama said? Oh, wait you do. You care so much you’ll besmirch the efforts of the intelligence community and military personnel who brought OBL to justice in order for you to focus upon Obama’s ‘story’. Yeah, it’s all about Obama, isn’t it? I’m not the one who fails to grasp reality troll.

You have reading comprehension problems mixed in with your spastic drivel. The only people I besmirched are you and Zero. Two peas in a pod.

You respond and argue like a liberal. You call me a troll; once again you are projecting. I'll not be responding to any post of yours again, unless it's to poke fun at you. Zero would probably appreciate your little tight ass but you're a little too gay for me.

If you wanted a celebration thread yesterday, why didn’t you start one? You didn’t have any problem starting this thread being critical of other Freepers.

I was replying to your post today, not yesterday. If you dont believe those things today, dont post them today. It had odd speculations and the claim that they arent bizarre because they might happen. There’s a lot of ‘mights’ out there, but only one reality.

“scenarios thrown out for discussion before verifiable evidence is made available - none is made available as of the writing of this very post “
This is wrong, we knew within hours the exact compound that was raided and you can even view it via google earth, now there are pics of it, and there were contemporaneous tweets of the raid from a guy next door, and the DNA testing/matching was reported as well. Either it was OBL or it was a Big Lie.

And now you add the further insult that not buying into these fantastic speculations is a ‘simple reliance on faith’. Hardly. You are making a huge LEAP to assume a President - even one we dislike - and his whole administration including many professionals in the military, would make a public announcement based on a big lie. That’s what it would be if its not OBL, at the level of “the moon landing didnt really happen”.

The leap of faith required to place evidence-free speculations that assumes big-time official lied is precisely what is beyond the realm of reasonable skepticism. THAT’S where you are wrong. Taking the official story as the vastly likely reality is actually skepticism - skeptical that there is a Big Lie going down.

While it’s reasonable to be not 100% sure about the details of the event until more verified evdience corroborates it, such doubt does NOT give an excuse for groundless speculation. It’s nutty to make speculations out of thin air and act like such scenarios are as plausible as news accounts from multiple official sources. They are not - aka monkeys might fly out of my butt. This kind of nonsense is the source of many discreditable rumors and falsehoods.

As I said before, doubting OBL’s death is not ‘healthy skepticism’ it’s nutty.

“it is clearly pointless since you are incapable of grasping your fallacies and failures”
A pot kettle black moment.
The real fallacy: Absense of proof is not evidence of a conspiracy.

There’s a lot of ‘mights’ out there, but only one reality.

If everything you say is right, then why is the story continuing to change from moment to moment even now and the promised "evidence" not in evidence?

What I believe "might" be the truth I will not be convinced of until the evidence is in. Bigger scams have been pulled off in history than this IF it is a scam. I have NEVER said it was. I have never said it wasn't. You don't seem to get this.

My point is not to close my mind prematurely as you have done. I have posted my view in this thread. But I will not close my mind off to other possibilities while the sand is shifting under my feet. That is foolish. You have solidified your position. Good for you. I shall wait for evidence or, at least, for the story to settle down to one version with the corroboration of somebody I TRUST agreeing with it.

So far that is not the case.

Absence of proof is not evidence of a conspiracy.

Absence of proof is not evidence of anything, which makes it fair game for any speculation. Absence of proof requires faith. Faith usually involves the concept of a higher power. Zero ain't it.

What you said about the car flag- I’m sure many had that same thought. I had had one in the car and couldn’t find it Monday morning. I really wanted to see them. I remember some time after 9-11, when many people had stopped using the car flags, stickers and magnets were fading, my son commented to me it was a shame people didn’t display the flag and other patriotic stuff all the time.
