Canadian voters have delivered Conservative Leader Stephen Harper another election night victory, but it is still too close to call whether he will head a minority or majority government, CBC News projects. Meanwhile NDP Leader Jack Layton was set to become Official Opposition leader.
The NDP, according to projections, made a major breakthrough and appeared to have more than doubled their seat count, while the Liberals were poised to suffer a major electoral loss.
As of 10:25 p.m. EST, the Conservatives were leading or elected in 152 seats, followed by the NDP with 100, Liberals with 30 and the Bloc with four.
In Quebec, Bloc Leader Gilles Duceppe was trailing behind NDP candidate Hélène Laverdière in the riding of Laurier-Sainte-Marie, in what was shaping out to be a disastrous night for the sovereignist party.

Comments or opinions - anyone?
It looks like the Bloc and Liberals made a huge mistake in voting to bring down the government. Epic miscalculation.
Let’s hope.
Totals seats = 308, so a majority = 155
This will be REALLY close ....
(nice to see the traitorous BQ wiped out though!!)
Just heard it on the radio -
now predicting a MAJORITY for Harper!!!
You might have been thrown off because it didn't have the word "Night" in the title. :-)
On that thread, we have later data than you have in your title.
Cool! I’ll go there!
Conservatives have won a majority
A dismaying and unfortunate aspect for the once powerful Liberal Party. It looks as if the New Democratic Party will form the opposition. I did hear 164 leading and elected, being seats for the Conservatives. Needing 155 seats ( I am told) for a majority.
Bloc Quebecois taking an awful beating by the NDP, in Quebec. I heard only four leading Bloc Quebecois ridings Mansbridge said.
The NDP are more vicious leftist thugs than the Liberals.
Still it is good to see the Good Guys win overall.
Don’t shed too many tears for Liberals - they created this election, so they got what they deserved.
But the BQ ... man, they went from 75 to 4?? They’re not even an official party in Parliament now - no more taxpayer dollars for you, Gilles!
“The NDP are more vicious leftist thugs than the Liberals.”
Jack Layton is an Obama clone with lighter skin.
Yes, they never turned their backs of the millions of dollars from the rest of Canada. Perhaps Prime Minister Harper can do something about the travesty of transfer payments next time.
Anyway I have 167 Conservative. 108 NDP. 39 Liberal. 1 Green Party. Sault Ste Marie, Ontario has just lost Tony Martin NDP member for over twenty years. It is Brian Hayes Conservative. Close vote and hard fought.
Tories get an absolute majority!
And yes, Jack Layton is the Canadian term for “douche bag.”
Liberal leader Michael Ignatiev making exit speech after close defeat in his own riding.
Tories have won a majority! Big win in Ontario.
Socialist NPD is now in second place for the first time. They’ve almost swept Quebec. The separatist bloc is all but dead. Their clownish leader lost his own seat. An NPD college student who doesn’t speak French and just got back from Vegas won a Quebec seat. Lots of nobody candidates who thought they were gonna be sacrificial lambs.
Liberals are now a rump. Their leader lost his own seat as well. He had the perfect pedigree to be a Prime Minister. LOL.
Eerily similar to the Labour party displacing he Liberal Party in the UK many decades ago.
The Green party leader, a stupid slag who thinks children should vote, may be elected in British Columbia.
I’m in London, Ontario and things are good here — my man, Ed Holder is in and it looks like Susan Truppe is in too (though not official). I’m happy conservatives are in the majority.
The Tories are roughly the Canadian equlivant of Republicans. This is good news.
They have more RINOS/CINOs traditionally called “Red Tories”.
But this is very good. An NPD government would be a disaster.
The Conservatives share values with the GOP here in terms of foreign policy. What they do internally is a reflection of the difference in culture of the USA and Canada. Remember at the time of our revolution, the loyalists went to what is now Canada... They will always be more statist and socialist - it is in the Canadian blood, just as we have our entrepreneurial individuality.. Harper is on the whole a good guy and we should be happy he has a majority
