The transgender victim of a brutal beat-down at a Maryland McDonald's broke her silence to call the attack a "hate crime," and says it's not the first time she's been assaulted.

Chrissy Lee Polis told the Baltimore Sun on Saturday the incident, which was captured on video and posted online, has left her "afraid to go outside."

"I want to cry, but I need to hold my head up," she said, adding that she's been beaten and sexually assaulted in the past because of her sexual identity.

If I went into a public bathroom and saw a person of the wrong sex in it, I would immediately walk out and just go away.

If it was a man in a woman’s bathroom, I might - just might - alert a manager.

But, since I am a hermit and rarely go anywhere, it’s all very theoretical.

I certainly would never call 911. Nor would I beat anyone up. But I would feel so extremely uncomfortable I would instantly leave.

And if it was not a regular man or woman but a sick pervert, I would not only leave, but I would leave very, very quickly.

It is hard for me to say whether I would notice that that is a disturbed man and not a ropy sort of young female.

I notice more aberration from gait and mannerisms than from a photograph.

what would my reaction be if I saw this man follow my young daughter into the ladies’ room?

It all depends on the environment and how many people are in the place...

If I am alone and it is a questionable, possible security risk I go into the toilet stall, latch the door and urinate... then wash hands and exit...

If I saw that thing, it wouldn’t bother me... so long as I am not approached or accosted in any way...

The hypothetical of me being a woman is illogical, but if I were a woman, given the personalities of females in my immediate family, I would grab that thing by the hair and drag it out of the bathroom...

Whwere I attend school, LGBTQ people have a group of people on campus who support them and address their concerns http://www.oakland.edu/safe/ and a center that caters to their unique issues and interests http://www.oakland.edu/gsc/.

School policy prohibits any harassment, intimidation, threats and assault against such people.

I am pretty sure the policy here is they can use whatever bathroom is "appropiate for their gender presentation."

Personally, I feel that the law has to be followed, and that all people deserve respect.

I feel sorry for "Chrissy" in the photo. I agree that people who are like this will have a very difficult (and possibly prematurely shortened) life ahead of them.

I do not believe that I would feel threatened by this person. But my rape awareness / prevention and self defense training still dictate that my guard would be up and I would take a defense posture around I think may become a possible threat to me or others.

I should also add that that I would act to intervene (if possible) or at least act as a witness and immediately report any threats or assault againt such an individual.

That said, any bad behavior by any such individual should be immediately delt with. For instance a man in the ladies room needs to sit down on the seat and not stand to tinkle. If he went in the stall and stood up and urinated into the toliet instead of sitting down I myself would consider that disordly conduct in the womens room. Not a good charge to have to explain to a judge.

It (people's rights and respect) has to go both ways.

We are not merely animals. We are more than that.

Human individuals are created in the image of God and have rights endowed by their creator.

We live in a society that provides for social order and protects people's rights. These rules of behavior are enforced by law. Without these rules society descends into anarchy (like the situation which apparently exists in the urban areas where these kinds of attacks occur).

The same people who attacked this transgender person would likely just as soon attack you for your (assuming you are a white male) "white male privilege". Maybe you can fight pretty good. Well, they can get more people and grab baseball bats and so on, until they are able to finally beat you down. When later caught, they will say that you muttered the "N" word to set them off.

That by using this excuse they simply confirm by their own admittance that they are nothing but animals with no ability to think before acting and no self control seems lost on them...

Well, My Whole POINT is that there is No Excuse whatsoever for this kind of behavior to be tolerated from any corner of society. If you found a transvestite walking into the ladies room you might want to confront the individual and ask politely if there is fear of some kind of privacy invasion. Maybe talk to the manager and see if there’s anything he can do. Or walk out of the place and never return if it offends you so much to participate in this individuals delusion.

But this kind of beatdown is inexcusable on any level. It was just mean on the face of it. And i personally will not tolerate any kind of excuses from conservatives surrendering to bigotry. I expect bigotry from a liberal democrat, but not from a conservative or libertarian. If this guy is a he and thinks he’s a she or whatever the case. He wasnt hurting anyone. The only time I’d use the Men’s room is if I had to go really bad and was about to have an accident.(To urinate,that is).I would let the men know that I’d be coming in to use the toilet so they would not be caught totally off-guard.
