~ The FReeper Canteen presents…. ~

ANZAC DAY, April 25th

Last Post - click

Come home! Come home! The last post is sounding
for you to hear. All good soldiers know very well there
is nothing to fear while they do what is right, and forget
all the worries they have met in their duties through the
year. A soldier cannot always be great, but he can be a
gentleman and he can be a right good pal to his comrades in
his squad. So all you soldiers listen to this - Deal fair by all
and you’ll never be amiss.

Canteen Mission Statement

Showing support and boosting the morale of
our military and our allies military
and the family members of the above.
Honoring those who have served before.

ANZAC War Memorial, Sydney, Australia

Anzac Day is commemorated by Australia and New Zealand on 25 April every year to remember members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who landed at Gallipoli in Turkey during World War I. Anzac Day is also observed in the Cook Islands, Niue, and Tonga. It is no longer observed as a national holiday in Samoa.

Anzac Day marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. The acronym ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, whose soldiers were known as Anzacs. The pride they took in that name endures to this day, and Anzac Day remains one of the most important national occasions of both Australia and New Zealand.

When war broke out in 1914, Australia had been a Federal Commonwealth for only thirteen years. In 1915, Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of an Allied expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli Peninsula to open the way to the Black Sea for the Allied navies. The plan was to capture Istanbul, capital of the Ottoman Empire and an ally of Germany. The ANZAC force landed at Gallipoli on 25 April, meeting fierce resistance from the Turkish defenders. What had been planned as a bold strike to knock Turkey out of the war quickly became a stale-mate, and the campaign dragged on for eight months. At the end of 1915, the Allied forces were evacuated after both sides had suffered heavy casualties and endured great hardships. Over 8,000 Australian and 2,700 New Zealand soldiers died. News of the landing at Gallipoli made a profound impact on Australians and New Zealanders at home and 25 April quickly became the day on which they remembered the sacrifice of those who had died in war.

Though the Gallipoli campaign failed in its military objectives of capturing Istanbul and knocking Turkey out of the war, the Australian and New Zealand troops' actions during the campaign bequeathed an intangible but powerful legacy. The creation of what became known as an "Anzac legend" became an important part of the national identity in both countries. This shaped the ways they viewed both their past and their future.

Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature’s gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history’s page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair.

In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.

Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We’ll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who’ve come across the seas
We’ve boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To Advance Australia Fair. In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.

Hi All and Many Thanks for the ANZAC Day Post!!!! I went to early sunrise service and will be attending several BBQ's in the afternoon. I'll try to post a few more pictures of what we did here in Charleville.Here's my feeble attempt at an ANZAC Day Post.God Bless You All

ANZAC DAY 25 APRIL 2011

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.

Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow; I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain; I am the gentle Autumn’s rain. When you awaken in the morning’s hush. I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft star that shines at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry. I am not there; I did not die Photobucket

Oh - and the news - we have several friends who have had damage to their homes. It’s a pure miracle that no one died. One of the tornadoes was rated at an EF4. There were a couple of EF2’s and an EF1 as well.

Two-up is a traditional Australian gambling game, involving a designated 'Spinner' throwing two or three coins into the air. Players gamble on whether the coins will fall with both (obverse) heads up, both (reverse) tails up, or with one coin a head, and one a tail (known as 'Odds'). It is traditionally played on ANZAC Day in pubs and clubs throughout Australia, in part to mark a shared experience with Diggers through the ages.

My family in New Zealand fought in all the wars

a great grandfather fought in the Maori Wars in the 1860s...(Moms side)

his son my grandfather fought in the Boar War in Africa...

3 of my mothers uncles died at Gallipoli..the brothers of her mother...there were 18 children in that family

There were 15 children in Moms family...of my mothers 7 brothers 6 fought in WWII

5 in the Pacific and 1 in Nth Africa and Europe...he died in Italy...

3 of the ones in the Pacific were coast watchers in the Solomon Islands...

Some of the 8 girls were in the New Zealnd Army Womens Auxilary...they drove trucks and dug ditches and worked in the hospitals in New Zealand...

and dated the cute American Marines who were there in NZ training to go to the Pacific :)

(My mother was already married but apparantly her younger sisters used to giggle to her about some drop dead gorgeous hunk or 2...the sisters were always very close)

On my fathers side several of his brothers fought in WWIII

The youngest (about 14-15) couldnt get my Nana’s permission to join up so he went to Australia and signed up under an assumed name and age and went and fought with the Diggers

Nana never knew where he had gone until he can home years later from the war...

It was all a lark to him...

Of my generation...my brother was in the RNZ Navy ...his ship patroled the China Sea during Nam

Several of my cousins fought in the New Zealand army in Nam...

Some girl cousins were in the New Zealand Air Force...

Just Mrs,SR, #1 Dau, and I.

We had an odd Easter Repast - Roast whole ears of corn in their well soaked (4-hrs) husks, hamburgers, Chips, Drink of choice, followed by a desert of watermelon.

Only thing that blasted Bugs brought me yesterday was a wrenched back! Icy-Hot pads, Tylenol, Sleep, a back brace like you see store workers wearing, and it's somewhat better at the end of today. Hopefully it will be much better tomorrow so I can work.

That sort of news wasn't heard but anyone with half a mind knows that a storm system of that magnitude would have effected a greater area. All the news focused on was the damage and subesquent shut down and delays at the airport.

Great thread, Galz! Seems like I’ve read about this just recently
and one of our Canteen heroes said...

“ANZAC Day is for our Veterans. Lest we Forget.”

Thank you, DieHard....and we’ll be remembering the heroes
from New Zealand! :)
