The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) this week released a report that said taxing people based on how many miles they drive is a possible option for raising new revenues and that these taxes could be used to offset the costs of highway maintenance at a time when federal funds are short.
The report discussed the proposal in great detail, including the development of technology that would allow total vehicle miles traveled (VMT) to be tracked, reported and taxed, as well as the pros and cons of mandating the installation of this technology in all vehicles.
"In the past, the efficiency costs of implementing a system of VMT charges particularly the costs of users' time for slowing and queuing at tollbooths would clearly have outweighed the potential benefits from more efficient use of highway capacity," CBO wrote. "Now, electronic metering and billing are making per-mile charges a practical option.

All good points, but I think it’s going to be easier to implement something that’s connected to the car’s on-board electronic system rather than a GPS technology that seems to be easier to interfere with.
Look at #49!
There will be a huge market for slightly over sized tires. Then the gov’t will have to inspect cars for anything that may change the odometer reading.
It’s inevitable that this sort of tax would require government Gps units that could provide complete data of everywhere a car was driven. Then it would be subject to search warrant and subpoena.
It would be a huge invasion of privacy.
Exactly!
One day they will figure out how to tax how much I piss.

“Isnt beer taxed already?”.

“Let me be clear”: Confiscation is always a viable option for revenue enhancement.

This system is up and running across the county. they just want to plug us private citizens into it - to TRACK us..our every movement. Get it?
And on the heels of that they will start issuing mile allowances. they will decide how many miles you can use in a given time. (Of course, if y ou’re a ‘friend of the administration, you can get a waiver.)
FOLKS: this is NOT about taxes. It's about control. Stop dragging your noses on the grass, trotting along behind the bellwether sheep. He's gonna lead you over a cliff.
Looks like the CBO is ready to shut this economy (what’s left of it) down real good.
True. But... We’re talking about an increasingly fascist Federal government, here. You really think they’re just interested in mileage?
Cheers
Want to drive a big, gas-guzzling SUV because you prefer them? F you, pay me.
Want to drive a small hybrid or electric car because you care about the environment and/or want to save money? F you, pay me.
We need to eliminate every last bit of Leftist influence to the course of our Nation since day one, and especially since the Woodrow Wilson era.
Hit the reset button, but NOT Hillary’s.
One very important aspect of Communist States is LIMITING MOVEMENT of citizens.
The TSA Scan & Grope program has this same effect (among others). Individual movements could be tracked, but they won’t be — unless you are already a “person of interest” to the State. Limiting movement has the effect of limiting the spread of information and ideas, and preventing groups of like-minded individuals from gathering (or “community organizing”). Limiting the mobility of the populace is as much a tenet of running a totalitarian state as limiting the flow of information, the flow of wealth, or the flow of food.
Hmmm... sounds like the mandate that we have to buy health insurance. I doubt this will go anywhere fast. I don't see the House Reps going along with this.
Thinking about the lyrics for “taxman”....
FAIL!! Where are you posting from; the Supreme Court??
You actually think we care to imitate the overbearing tax-raising methods of used-ta-was European socialist governments??
Get me the name of your dealer, 'cuz you're smokin' some SERIOUS hooch!
See, here in this Constitutional Republic, the way we go about encouraging people to drive more efficient cars is — and this is really novel — WE ACTUALLY TRY TO MARKET EFFICIENT CARS THAT PEOPLE WANT TO DRIVE!!
You know what happens then?
The people that want to drive them go out and buy them, and they actually DRIVE them.
I'm tellin' ya, man; the free market is totally righteous; you oughta try it sometime.
P.S. — Senator McCain, tell your Euroweenie friends to piss off.
