Presidential Proclamation--100th Anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire

On March 25, 1911, a fire spread through the cramped floors of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in lower Manhattan. Flames spread quickly through the 8th, 9th, and 10th floors -- overcrowded, littered with cloth scraps, and containing few buckets of water to douse the flames -- giving the factory workers there little time to escape. When the panicked workers tried to flee, they encountered locked doors and broken fire escapes, and were trapped by long tables and bulky machines. As bystanders watched in horror, young workers began jumping out of the windows to escape the inferno, falling helplessly to their deaths on the street below.

By the time the fire was extinguished, nearly 150 individuals had perished in an avoidable tragedy. The exploited workers killed that day were mostly young women, recent immigrants of Jewish and Italian descent. The catastrophe sent shockwaves through New York City and the immigrant communities of Manhattan's Lower East Side, where families struggled to recognize the charred remains of their loved ones in makeshift morgues. The last victims were officially identified just this year.

A century later, we reflect not only on the tragic loss of these young lives, but also on the movement they inspired. The Triangle factory fire was a galvanizing moment, calling American leaders to reexamine their approach to workplace conditions and the purpose of unions. The fire awakened the conscience of our Nation, inspiring sweeping improvements to safety regulations both in New York and across the United States. The tragedy strengthened the potency of organized labor, which gave voice to previously powerless workers. A witness to the fire,

Never heard of it.
Obviously it is a big UNION moment to attempt to connect to modern times.

Well now the circle is complete. Unions are burning down the nation.

Let’s hold hands and sing “I dreamed I saw Joe Hill last night” and get ready for May Day celebrations.

This is the only thing that my 16 year old granddaughter knew about Unions...until her dad and grandma set her straight.

I heard that several exits were closed because the workers were stealing from the company. The company only had one exit open and were checking employees before they left. I would not put it past some early union goon from “accidently” setting a fire.

Shirtwaist was THE big event which escalated Union power way back when.

The public was snookered into thinking that if one private company was evil they all were.

The fact that I've seen Shirtwaist multiple times in the news lately tells me that Unions are flailing around for something that will give them a lifeline.

Regulation by local jurisdictions did nearly every good thing that is attributed to unions in this country. Child labor banned.....by law. Maximum working hours....law. Disability for workers......law. Worker safety regulations, state mandates.

Sigh. Here we go yet again with that tired old story (and that's largely what it is, much of it fabricated) of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire. Let's see what else. The settlers killed all of the good peace-loving Indians. White-on-black crime is a hugh [sic] problem along with marauding gangs of Tea Partiers wreaking havoc.

What's not publicized is how, from the very outset, the labor union movement was an outgrowth of the Comintern. Also swept under the rug is the history of violence and mayhem spawned by union goons.

And today, entire cities and regions are mere shells of what they once were due to unionism. The woes of Detroit, Pittsburgh and Cleveland are all rooted in the anti-capitalism, anti-profit motives of unionism.

I guess I shouldn't hold my breath waiting for him to recognize the 100th anniversary of the introduction of the 1911 tomorrow, huh?

Thanks, John Moses Browning, for 100 years of firearms excellence!
