Ryan Fantasia couldnt figure out why his 9mm handgun wasnt firing correctly, so he was fiddling with it Friday night in the bedroom of his Chicago Heights home, police said.
His girlfriend entered the room and told him to stop playing with the gun, but he pulled the slide back and the gun then fired, killing the 19-year-old woman, police said.
Haley Pelock, of the 3100 block of Courtney Lane in South Chicago Heights, died from a gunshot wound in the chest, according to the Cook County medical examiners office.
Fantasia, 20, of 43 W. 26th St., was charged with felony obstruction of justice for hiding the gun and originally telling police a different story, police said. Cook County Circuit Judge Darren Bowden set bail at $5,000 Sunday at the Markham courthouse, and Fantasia is next due in court April 4.
While trying to figure out why the weapon wasnt working, Fantasia put a loaded magazine into the gun and began pulling the trigger, police said. It still wasnt shooting until Pelock entered the room.
Chicago Heights police received a 911 call about the shooting about 7:30 p.m., police said, and when they arrived, Fantasia told them Pelock had been shot and was lying on the floor of his second-floor bedroom. Officers went to the room and saw Fantasias brother, John Fantasia, 30, attempting to give Pelock CPR, police said. Chicago Heights police Detective Art Robles said Ryan Fantasia, who hid the gun in the back of the house, initially claimed someone else had shot into the house.
Robles said Fantasia and Pelock had been seeing each other for about two years and there was no argument between them before the shooting, which they ruled accidental.
You shouldnt be playing with guns, Robles said.
Sounds like he bought the pistol, tried to figure how it worked, slammed into it a loaded magazine and pulled the trigger. Nothing happened.
The girl walks into the room just as he pulls the slide back, releases it and pulls the trigger.
Boom.
Dum bass.

Sure it sound like that’s what happened. If we just sit back like idiots and believe everything we’re told.
All other things being equal, how accurate are they compared to a Beretta Model 92?
Two thoughts..
Don’t you have to pull the trigger on a Glock to remove the slide?
If you are just getting a handgun to have around the house.. Get. A. Revolver.
This exact same thing happened to friends of friends.
The guy was “fiddling” with his shotgun, and it “accidentally” fired, hitting the girlfriend center mass.
Of course, being true brainiacs, the rural cops immediately bought the story and the perp was not charged.
So, to paraphrase O.J. Simpson, “If you do it, here’s how you do it.”
Amazing.
It killed the girl in my story, too.
I’m glad my career Army dad and the Boy Scouts taught me gun safety at a young age. I still remember the principles. Always assume every gun is loaded. Always check for yourself. Always control the direction of your muzzle. Keep your finger off of the trigger until you are ready to fire.
I have a healthy respect for guns.
Because the gun was hidden in the back yard and he lied at first to us, he did get charged with felony obstructing, Rogers explained. There was no first-degree murder charge. The States Attorneys office is ruling it as an accidental death. Why the rush to make such a questionable ruling? After all, he's already a proven liar, and now they're accepting his Story 2.0 as The Truth.
Who is this guy? Who are his relatives? This whole thing is as phony as a Kenyan US President.
slide to barrel lockup would be more significant to accuracy than what is going on after the bullet leaves the barrel
And don’t point your weapon at anything you don’t intend to shoot. And don’t put your finger on the trigger unless you intend to pull it (the trigger, not the finger - whole different point to that last).
Colonel, USAFR
Yeah, yeah - “SQUEEZE”, not “pull” - but whoever heard of “Hey, kid - squeeze my finger”?
Colonel, USAFR
The Glocks are plenty accurate, but the Beretta 92 points much better.
For me, that just means that my Glocks require more practice, and my 92 makes me look like a pro at the range. My 92 has always been a great shooter.
My Glocks (a 21 and 19) as well as my Beretta 92 have never given me a single problem, and I wouldn't part with any of them. My G19 is my primary weapon, FWIW.
It looks like Mr Right hand is just narrowly avoiding some slide bite.
Let me get this straight. Off all the directions in 3 dimensions this guy could have been pointing the gun it just “happened” to be pointing at his girl friend’s chest when it went off.
Yeah. I believe that. /s
***Sure it sound like thats what happened. If we just sit back like idiots and believe everything were told.***
I’ve seen some intelligent people who were so dumb when it came to firearms they were a danger to everyone around.
I can recall one dumb, dum bass who was so dumb he made the mistake of telling us at work about being stopped by the highway patrol with a pistol stocked shotgun in the seat.
He said he HP unloaded his shotgun, confiscated his ammo and let him go because they told him that he was “DUMB”! “Too dumb to be arrested”!
Coule of comments:
1. Is this not Chicago, and is not Chicago still in IL? The guy had a handgun-is that legal? I doubt there is a FOID card involved.
2. 20 year old purchasing a handgun-THAT is illegal at the federal and I am certain IL State level (while I recognize the illegality of this, I do not agree-mind you, lawful citizens of less than 21 YOA should be able to be responsible for thier own armed self-defense).
He should be charged with at least three other felonies as well as declared stupid beyond rehabilitation....
Regards
***Is it loaded?***
The old way to check if a MUZZLE LOADER is loaded is to but the muzzle in your mouth and blow to see if air comes out the touch hole.
This is shown in one scene in the movie CUT THROAT ISLAND. A man points a pistol at Gena Davis. She says the pistol is unloaded because “I have your balls in my hand.” He then places the muzzle in his mouth to see if it is unloaded. It was.
I have an old report from the 1700s in which an Englishman who is bird hunting fires a flintlock. It misfired so the helper put the muzzle in his mouth and blew. It was a hangfire and it fired then and took the back out of the helper’s head.
“Is it loaded?”
No, it is not. It is a Remington Rolling Block, or a copy. You can see that the hammer and rolling block are both back, making it unable to fire. He is checking to see how clean the bore is.
