State officials said Thursday that damage to the marble inside and out the State Capitol would cost an estimated $7.5 million.
Cari Anne Renlund, chief legal counsel for the state Department of Administration, said in Dane County court that estimates of damage to marble includes $6 million to repair damaged marble inside the Capitol, $1 million for damage outside and $500,000 for costs to supervise the damage.
Much of the damage apparently has come from tape used to put up signs and placards at the Capitol.

How can tape damage stone? If it is only a matter of washing the tape off, get busy and make those teachers scrub up the mess they made!

I would say that the teacher’s union had better start buffing and polishing then! THAT would be an excellent lesson for THE CHILDREN...

Not only that, but those large crowds are clearly in violation of fire codes when it comes to the number of people that can be safely allowed within a structure.

Will union laborers being doing the repair work?
To: evets
If marble reacts like polished concrete does to tape, then it's FAR more serious than that. There is some sort of chemical reaction which occurs that leaves a permanent shadow on the stone where the tape used to be, it has nothing to do with the sticky residue.

Tape adhesive will stain and penetrate stone.
Stone is a very porous substrate, marble is the worst.
Nice to look at but that is about it.
To: milwguy
take the cost of repair out of the budget of those responsible for protecting it - the Madison P,D. - if no money there then sue the WI Democratic Party for the cost and more.

"I would say that the teachers union had better start buffing and polishing then!" Except that everything they touch turns to sh!t. They should pay for it to be done by non-union professional stone restorers.

I hope that the damage to the Capitol is well documented and made public. Take plenty of photographs of the pigsty that is left behind.

Belligerant, uncouth a-holes are evidently the rule and not the exception these days. I saw a bumper sticker the other day - more like a bumper poster - that said "Veterans did the impossible for the ungrateful". Too true, unfortunately.
