A veteran Houston police officer who was participating with a cooking team at the Houston rodeo's Bar-B-Que cookoff has been relieved of duty for reportedly tossing a tear gas canister to booth opponents during the popular event, sickening several patrons.

Senior police officer Mike Hamby, 51, was relieved of duty with pay on Monday while he is under investigation for "criminal allegations,“ said HPD spokeswoman Jodi Silva. The nature of allegations against Hamby are under investigation by the internal affairs department and will not be disclosed, Silva said.

At the Houston Police Officer Union, where Hamby is a member of the board of directors, president Gary Blankinship said he had no comment on the officer's suspension. Hamby, who joined HPD in December 1980, is assigned to the department's burglary and theft division.

It seemed like a good idea at the time.

Should have waited for the Chili cookoff. That way he could have blamed the noxious gasses on bad chili.

If it was anybody but a cop, they'd be charged with an act of terrorism with a weapon of mass destruction and be cooling their heels in Gitmo.

This guy gets suspended "with pay" thanks to the cop union. This is a great example of why public employees have no business being in a union.

No, you would have been arrested and charged with a felony, committing a terrorist attack. Why is not this cop charged with a terrorist attack?

It’s the apartheid criminal justice system at work. One set of laws for us, another for the cops...

Back in 1984 a platoon from 3rd bn 4th marines was aggressing a unit of reserves at Camp Lejeune.

One night after dark people from the reserves used one of the emergency landlines along the road to call out for pizza. The troops see all these weekend warriors chowing down during the only time in the year they are expected to train for deprivation and war...and gassed them with morters.

You’re not mentioned in the article.

I sense a deeper story and your involvement somehow.

“Sources tell Eyewitness News Officer Hamby got into an argument with some people in one of the cook off tents and threw a tear gas grenade inside the tent. The tent was evacuated.”

This man needs to see the inside of a jail cell.

HPD has been out of control for quite sometime.

In fact, they've had a pretty poor reputation round these parts since the 70’s.

Just one more bit of proof.

When I was a teen the saying was the HPD was just another gang, but the city paid for their colors. Haven’t spent much time there in years, but they were pretty much outlaws thirty years ago: Throw down guns, planting narcotics, etc. My only contact with them was when I was thirteen. Cop rolled down his window and asked me if I’d seen anyone run by. I told him no sir (yes, I said no sir, and said it politely.) He called me a lying little bastard and burned off. For the record, I hadn’t seen anyone run by.
