Fox News says the United States has deployed some Marines and two amphibious ships to help with the evacuations in Libya.
The news comes one day after the U.S. moved naval and air forces closer to Libya and said all options were open, including patrols of the North African nation's skies to protect its citizens from their ruler, Muammar Qaddafi.
The Obama administration is demanding that Gadhafi relinquish power immediately.
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton warned that Libya is at risk of collapsing into a "protracted civil war" amid increasingly violent clashes between the two sides.
On Tuesday, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice cast doubt on Qaddafi's sanity and ability to lead and said the international community will continue pressuring Qaddafi with embargos and sanctions until he steps down.

Send in the freakin’ Red Cross. Our Marines aren't a bus service.
I can see it now...100k Libyans rush to the shores to be evacuated along with the western folks. Where do you send them? I think we’d be better off getting all of these westerners to just drive over the border into Egypt and put them up in fancy hotels for a week or two.
LOL! Great point! ;-)
Well now, if this is prophecy, the Halls of Montezuma must be on the horizon.
Let Libyans mind Libya’s business.
...to the shores of Tripoli...” Been there. Done that. Go get ‘em, boys!
They ought to send a few Marines over to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. I hear there’s one hidin’ out over there...

Call came in at 3, Hillary Rodham calls back a week later at 4 PM worst Sec state ever!
I’d like to see Gaddafi unable to fly planes that bomb innocent civilians. If that takes some air cover, I think that is something we should do. We should have done that in Darfur, IMHO, with a (one) B-52 on station over Khartoum.
I don’t want boots on the ground. But I think a relatively low risk to us / high reward to innocent civilians intervention is strategically in our interest. When the Libyans control their own country, they may be more inclined favorably towards us if we shot down Gaddafi’s planes of death.
I’ll take that bet.
There is always a Battalion Landing Team afloat in the Mediterranean Sea.
All that needed to be done was tell the Admiral in charge of the fleet to direct it to Libya.
The Marines are in there 24/7/12
God speed , brothers..
Semper Fi
It looks like they will just be assisting in getting refugees safely out of Libya.
Actually, that would make an incredibly good poster. But, it would be more appropo if adults were actually in charge of the govt. and not the current group of Marxist adolescents.
If the ROE are just I have no doubt our brother Marines will fare well. If not. I don't see how we can benefit from any scenario Obama/Clinton can drum up.
Semper Fi,
TS
Will they be allowed to do what they did last ime they were in that region ???
or will they be told not to fire back etc ???
What a difference 2 centuries make
Since the likelihood that very little American interest will be protected here, can at least one Marine take a shot at the Lockerbie bomber while he is there?
We have no reason to be there. Big mistake.
Why is it that the world complains because the US is a bully etc., etc.. Then the first time there is a problem they demand to know why we haven't gotten involved yet. We have troops in Iraq and fighting a vicious war in Afghanistan and now they want our Marines to die in Libya. For what? let the Libyans take care of their own problems.
And we could barely give lip service to Iran’s uprising where it is in US interests to overthrow the regime.
Once again Zero has it a** backwards.
