I have it on my ipod from Audible.com. The unabridged addition, 63 hours long. The Narrator is excellent and its a lot easier to listen to than to read. I have listened to it at least 6 times. Just got THE FOUNTAINHEAD a couple of days ago.

How's it go? "Roark jumps on soapbox again and runs on woodenly for days ... Well, I'll be, Roark jumps on a soapbox again and runs on woodenly for days?"

Don't get me wrong, reading Rand was transformational for me as well and I regard myself as something of a small-L libertarian, but all the elevation of her writing blows my mind. She wasn't among the great authors. Her sphere was in communicating ideology.

I greatly prefer her earlier work, which was rather unapologetically more of a, what, manifesto? Primarily Anthem and We The Living.

There’s something fundamentally wrong about that. :-)

Roark was “The Fountainhead”, not “Atlas Shrugged”. I only know for sure because I’m reading that right now. OMG, she really has a thing for beating dead horses.

It’s a tough slog sometimes, but worth it. She’s not the greatest author but the concepts and ideology, she’s almost without compare.

I do get my Rand protagonists in a tangle sometimes. Fountainhead is architects, Atlas is trains and mining, right.

I began reading Atlas Shrugged in 1976.

I’m almost done.

From the analysis section at the link:

Dagny is a model of the spirit and practice of capitalism. She believes in industrial production and profit — hard work and earning large amounts of money. She orders rails from Hank Rearden instead of Orren Boyle because Rearden delivers his product and Boyle does not. Likewise, Dagny will provide freight service to Ellis Wyatt and the Colorado industrialists but not to the destitute economy of socialist Mexico because Wyatt and his colleagues produce but the Mexican economy does not. Jim, on the other hand, is an example of the spirit and practice of socialism. He believes in sacrificing for the "public good" and in giving chances to the little guy, rather than dealing with those already successful. He orders rail from Associated Steel instead of the efficient Rearden Steel in order, he says, to give Orren Boyle a chance. Likewise, Jim builds the San Sebastian Line at a cost of millions to give the impoverished Mexicans an economic opportunity. Dagny seeks to earn profit; Jim seeks to serve the public welfare. Because of their underlying differences, Dagny and Jim clash regarding the San Sebastian Line, the choice of steel companies, and many other things.

Based on this, I have to agree with EBH that Publius' threads - especially with Billthedrill's comments - are much better.

Thnak you both for your kind comments. Billthedrill and I worked tirelessly to come up with something better than Cliff's Notes, and we succeeded. We've turned it into a book (tentatively titled A Navigational Tool for Atlas Shrugged), we have an agent in New York, and we're hoping that a publisher will acquire it. Earlier in this thread are links to all the FReeper Book Club threads on Atlas Shrugged, and FReepers are free to go back and "take the course" as the movie's release approaches.
