Gov. Rick Scott has turned down more than $2 billion in federal money for a high-speed rail project that would link Tampa and Orlando.

"The truth is that this project would be far too costly to taxpayers and I believe the risk far outweighs the benefits,'' Scott said this morning in a release announcing his decision to turn down the rail money.

Scott said he weighed three main points in deciding to turn down the money:

Our new governor is infuriating ALL the right people!

I held my nose when I voted for him- but so far I’m really pleased!

Nice one by Rick Scott. Come one FL - get on illegal immigration and get a BC check for the primaries ASAP.

Great news for our state!!

If this is built - you'll have to rent a car when you get to your destination anyway.

The time saved using this stupid idea train is not worth what it will cost us in the longrun!!

Our trains in Florida? Freight trains do just fine in FL. Passenger rail is a joke.

Unfortunately, the money will just be transferred over to another state to a governor who will gladly partake at the guv’ment teat.

Here is Portlandia, officials are excited about the possibility of getting $200 million for light rail, even though the cost is $1.5 billion...and we all know just how much extra cash we have laying around to throw into money-losing projects.

Same here...although I wasn't exactly "holding my nose" like I was for McCain '08.
Actually, it was Sarah Palin that I was voting for then.

All the liberal comments at the link are equating Gov. Rick Scott with the tea-party and THAT'S a good thing.

Good for Gov. Scott! Now, we need to spread that scrutinizing mentality to CA where there is another ridiculous “high-speed rail” proposal.

OMG!!! Are you telling me that a Governor actually thought past cashing the check and took time to actually look at the long term effects? I am shocked!!!!

We don’t need a stinkin’ 2 billion dollar train.

But what about saving the environment, and helping the poor that don't have transportation? /SARC

Exactly. Temporary jobs for temp workers.

More like temporary jobs for ILLEGAL ALIEN workers, as with this VA hospital in FL.

The commission behind this train estimated tickets would be $20 per person one way.

Most recent data shows CA only receiving 78 cents on the dollar for every dollar sent to Washington. I’m tired of paying outrageous taxes to support the welfare states. And yes I want it back. CA state taxes are beyond outrageous and uneccessarily so if we just got our due from the federal taxes. CA essentially pays for the welfare states. End of story.

Perhaps the price would be $20 but the costs would be much more!!

If the tickets were $4 people might use it. At $20 its cheaper to drive.

Never mind the lack of transportation when you arrive in Orlando
