Lakin’s brigade commanders could no more lawfully order him to combat operations without a valid CINC’s approval than they could lawfully order him to combat operations in Iran.

If the orders had been for combat operations in Iran and Lakin had refused, should he be left to “swing in the wind”?

SINCE Obama is not a Constitutional POTUS, there was no lawful authorization for the Afghanistan combat orders, just as there is no lawful authorization for Iran combat orders. It’s the same thing. Joe Biden has not approved either combat operation, and the 20th Amendment required him to “act as President” when Obama failed to qualify by Jan 20, 2009.

It’s time to break camp and move everything to the Pakistan-India border.

General Petraeus? Do you know the history of the Iraq war?

Yes, he's a great hero of Time, Newsweek, The New York Times, etc., but I'm talking reality.

Spend some time talking with troops that were in Ninewah with him and after, and you'll find that things weren't so rosy as the lefties would have you believe.

Petraeus was brought in as the commanding general because he literally wrote the book on urban pacification and dealing with insurrection.

Funny...he was in the war in 2003, but the COIN FM wasn't drafted until 2006. Did he have a time machine?!?

The Left loved him because he acted like they do...he threw money around, not really caring where it went or how it was spent. "Money is ammunition" is a great line--if you follow through on it...as in, "Money is ammunition, so don't give it to your enemies!" Too bad so many arms went missing under him, and too bad he helped funnel so many US taxpayer dollars to the insurgency.

As much as he's perceived as being all touchy-feely and understanding "the people," he sure screwed up in his approach in Mosul. While it's true that Sec. Rumsfeld was clueless with his Stryker brigades serving as blunt instruments where a delicate touch was needed and providing too few "boots on the ground," that doesn't explain the whole story. Recall how poorly the Iraqis trained by him performed, as compared with others. Recall the warnings the Kurds gave about who he was putting into place, and how, after he left, the Sunni police capitulated while the Kurdish police didn't.

So the whole "Gen. Petraeus was great in Mosul" narrative isn't as straightforward as the hagiography would indicate.

The changes that were made in the Iraq strategy were his changes, as was the surge.

Wow...is Fred Kagan actually Gen. Petraeus in disguise? Or maybe Jack Keane?

This man ( with domestic balls of a dust mite) turned a blind eye to two officers who **politely** asked Obama to prove his natural born citizenship. Patraeus let two truly brave men and war veterans, Lakin and Cook, twist slowly in the wind.

Ah. So better to let Obama remain in power until 2016, then support the most qualified soldier of our generation, simply because he didn't self destruct his career over a pointless gesture that the courts and the people declined to pursue?

If you're in love with moral victories, as opposed to real ones, then by all means, keep up this absolutist line. Even if the Birther issue is %100 true, fact of the matter is, most Americans are going to give Obama the benefit of the doubt on this issue forever. Get over it. You want to win the next election, or change people's minds, focus on what sells.

Petraeus has more ability, intellect and stature than Obama and the next five GOP contenders put together. Freaking out over an issue of birth certificate paperwork that *isn't his lane to check* is counterproductive on a galactic scale.

Character is EVERYTHING! It is fundamental to everything that will follow.

A man that allowed his troops to serve under a likely usurper posing as president and Commander in Chief has a despicalbe character!

While General Patraeus might be willing to fall on a grenade for his troops against a foreign enemy on foreign soil, I **seriously** doubt that he would defend the Constitution against a **domestic** enemy. Gee! doing that might hurt his career or pension. (/s) That he abandoned his troops **is** Patreaus’ **fundamental** character.

What sort of **character** does a man have if he turned a blind eye to two officers who **politely** asked Obama to prove his natural born citizenship. Patraeus let two truly brave men and war veterans, Lakin and Cook, twist slowly in the wind. That is his character.

Aside from this being extremely offensive to everyone in the military who's still out every day risking their lives, even without a copy of Obama's long form in their email inbox, do you extend this to everyone else in uniform?

Secret Service? FBI? Your local police department? Lots of people swear oaths to uphold the law. They all cowards too? Unworthy of your support? There's hundreds of other generals, admirals, and senior law enforcement officials. None of them have spoken out. Not voting for them either, I take it?

Will you be refusing to pay taxes this year, until you get your copy of Obama's long form in the mail? Or will you only be holding others accountable for not destroying their lives in vain protest? Is manning your keyboard sufficient?

I am criticising General Patraeus NOT the military.

**I** am OFFENDED that you would suggest this.

As for the rest of your post, I can NOT defend a strawman of YOUR creation.

FACT: General Patraeus abandoned his responsibility to our nation's troops to assure that they were serving under a legitimately eligible Commander in Chief! That is **this** man's CHARACTER.

FACT: When lower level officers politely asked Obama to prove his natural born citizen, General Patraeus turned his back on them. That is **General Patraeus’** CHARACTER!

Sorry...I am disgusted.

Yep.

I wonder how he feels/felt about the new non-DADT policies?

Thanks for the ping, Starwise.

“It was temporary anyway, it was a step down for him to take this job.”

That’s very true, but why now?

His tour of duty could have been extended.

Is this his idea, or are “they” throwing him under the bus, too?

What’s if he’s being thrown in as a ringer by Obama/RINO Inc. to prevent Sarah Palin from getting the nomination?

I find it peculiar that after reading every single post up to this time, not a single person suggested a new war is coming.

With all the unrest in the world there are several probable scenarios on the radar.

Israel, India and the west in general, are credible threats to the middle east as long as Iran is developing nuclear weapons.

-——not a single person suggested a new war is coming——

Interesting concept. Not knowing exactly what happened, it is conceivable he is returning to plan.

However, did he not resign?
