Arguing that state and local governments need the ability to adjust to the new economic paradigm, Senate Republicans today unveiled details of the most sweeping attempt in 27 years to limit the power of public unions to negotiate terms of employment.
The measure attracted a large group of union supporters to the Statehouse. The crowd inside spilled into the atrium, where a sound system was set up so they could hear testimony. Outside, several protestors clad in yellow shirts and carrying signs that urged a no vote demonstrated on the sidewalk.
The stakes are huge.
Collective bargaining would be wiped out for all state workers, including those at institutions of higher education. Local police officers and fire fighters who cannot strike would see weakened binding arbitration. Local workers would no longer bargain for health insurance, automatic pay increases would be stripped from state law, and teachers would not get a say in which buildings they teach in. While Sen. Shannon Jones, R-Spingboro, insists she is not trying to punish state workers, her Senate Bill 5 is expected to ignite a war with the unions the likes of which this state has not seen in decades.
"I believe the vast majority of government workers are good people who work hard every day," she said. "But I don't think that everybody, by virtue of showing up every day, should be entitled to the same increase in salary."

Proposals in the bill:

Long overdue. No need to unionize “state” workers if they’re on the public dole. And it’s dangerous besides. Very dangerous.
Collectivists vs Taxpayers, and so it begins.
Pray for Americans
Don’t get too excited. It’s likely that some communist Federal Judge will strike this down on orders from Barry.
Mitch Daniels did this within 3 weeks of taking over the Governorship here in IN.
he removed the requirement they join a union, and within a few short years, practically all of those affected opted out of their union and their dues.
And they workers still have a secure job with bennies.
Excellent! Ohio FReepers might want to pick up a few fire extinguisers and extra ammo...
I guess I was wrong on the dates and time....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitch_Daniels
on his first day in office, he decertified all government employee unions, removing the requirement that State employees be union members; and, within eight months, 92% of government union members quit their union.[22]
I don’t like unions, but merit pay has its problems too. If you don’t kiss up, don’t play the bureaucratic game, aren’t registered to vote the right way...you can forget any raise.
BUMP for excellence.
Good on Ohio!
Well done!
Another good reason to like Daniels. He seems to be leading the way in a lot of reforms.
And we are all paying union dues to the DOL already.
Wisconsin, also. National Guard will be called out there if there is trouble from state workers.

Run Sarah Run!
.
Good news bump!
There is an inherent conflict of interest in “government employee unions”.
A good knowledge worker has no need for a union.
