Daniels to CPACers: Don't Be 'Suicide Bombers'
national journal ^ | 2/12/11 | Alex Roarty

Posted on 02/12/2011 8:43:02 PM PST by Nachum

In a speech that appeared aimed directly at conservatives wary of his stance on social issues, Indiana Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels bluntly warned participants at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday against spurning candidates and issues capable of attracting broad public support.

"Purity in martyrdom is for suicide bombers," said Daniels, whose potential 2012 presidential candidacy has been defined by his critique of the some of his party's most ardent activists. He also called not-so-subtly for a shift in the party's political tone.

"I submit that, as we ask Americans to join us on such a boldly different course," Daniels said, "it would help if they liked us, just a bit."

Daniels' speech was markedly different than those given at the conference by other prospective GOP presidential candidates, who mostly struck to red meat for the party's base. Though the governor did take a few early jabs at President Obama, he seemed less interested in catering to his than in challenging to reach beyond its orthodoxy "to unify America, or enough of it, to demand and sustain the big change we propose."

Anyone who stands for principle is the equivalent of a “suicide bomber” in Daniel’s world.

One more proof, as if we needed it, that the GOP leadership is pretty much made up now of self-aggrandizing, unprincipled political hacks, fake conservatives, and libertarian nuts.

I'm glad this bum keeps saying this stuff because it makes me oppose him even more. Soon enough, the purity test will be applied to social conservatives to keep us out of the party. You wait. If you're not pro-"gay" and "open-minded" on abortion, you're out.

How's that for purity?

Make no mistake. What Mitch Daniels is proposing is not a truce. It's a surrender.

to demand and sustain the big change we propose

No big change (for good or ill) has ever been made anywhere, in any field of human existence, without pissing off the opposition.

The GOP ruling class think they're still in charge.

Boy, do they have a nasty surprise coming.

"it would help if they liked us, just a bit."

No thanks. I'm not going to compromise my pro-life or any other principle so people will 'like' me.

This is what I have read that he said:

He urged conservatives not to let the “perfect to be the enemy of the historic good.”

“Purity in martyrdom is for suicide bombers. King Pyrrhus is remembered, but his nation disappeared. Winston Churchill set aside his lifetime loathing of Communism in order to fight World War II. Challenged as a hypocrite, he said that when the safety of Britain was at stake, his “conscience became a good girl.” We are at such a moment. I for one have no interest in standing in the wreckage of our Republic saying ‘I told you so’ or ‘You should’ve done it my way.’”

If your support is broad enough, your supporters are willing to accept your narrow issues as well as their own. Daniel’s problem is that he can’t understand why Dr. Paul defeated McConnell’s pick in Kentucky. It is because Paul says what he means and means what he says. That Paul’ says this in an attractive manner is, of course the difference between victory and defeat.

Sorry Mitch, that is no way to appeal to a large group of voters... demanding they change and suggesting they are like suicide bombers if they don’t... you may be intoxicated by your own BS, but we’re not...

Isn’t he saying that we must let Daniels and his friends decide what is good? I respect political experience, but we forget that Lincoln was far more radical than we like to think. Easy enough to think of him as a “Henry Clay Whig,” In reality Seward was the Whig, and Seward would never taken us into Civil War.

These guys working from inside our ranks are FAR more dangerous than ANYONE on the left to conservatism and it's movement... FAR MORE!!!

I sincerely hope at least some of you watched as Arnold Schwartzenrenegger pulled the wheels off the Republican Party and anything to do with conservatism in it's platform while he watched CA become deformed and bankrupted and further demoralized!!!

I’ve been watchin the cpac speeches. I thought Romney’s was good (not saying I would vote for him in the primary) I thought T-Paw’s was good and I thought Daniels’ presence was actually quite bad. He doesn’t have that presidential quality. I think Trump showed incredible foolishness by directly insulting Paul supporters, how dumb. And I was loving what Trump was bringing to the table in terms of China. But how naive do you have to be to tell all Ron Paul voters not to vote for you id Paul doesn’t run?

Palin 2012.

It's clear this year's agenda is to legitimize perversion within the conservative sphere. I am very disappointed with Palin & Coulter. Daniels can take a walk. I wont support him. And I am rethinking my support of Palin.

There are certain issues that are “no compromise” for me & legitimizing perversion is at the top of the list.

Yep. It was a fantastic speech. You can sure tell who the lazy ones were on this thread who didn't listen to it...they will fall for anything.

The author of this piece is just a big fat liar. Daniels has unnerved some folks..LOL.
