U.S. Envoy to Egypt: Mubarak 'Must Stay' for Now (Obama Humiliated by Special Envoy)
The Hill ^ | Saturday, February 5, 2011 | Bridget Johnson

Posted on 02/05/2011 1:59:09 PM PST by kristinn

Amid calls for President Hosni Mubarak to not wait until the end of his term to step down, the U.S. special envoy to Egypt told the Munich Security Conference that the 30-year ruler needs to stick around fro now.

Frank Wisner, a former ambassador to Egypt deployed there this past week to apparently urge Mubarak to hand over the reins, said Saturday that the transition "is an ideal moment for him to show the way forward."

Wisner spoke to the conference via video link from New York.

"We need to get a national consensus around the pre-conditions for the next step forward. The president must stay in office to steer those changes," he said.

"I believe that President Mubarak's continued leadership is critical -- it's his chance to write his own legacy," Wisner added, according to reports.

President Obama also referred to Mubarak's legacy Friday in appealing for him to make "the right decision" and "make a judgment about a pathway forward that is orderly but also meaningful and serious."

Wisner said caution should be exercised in the transition because "this is a very volatile and dangerous time."

"The more Egyptians hear from the outside world that the president's got to go, and this has got to happen, that's got to happen, we create a negative force inside of Egypt itself," he said in arguing that rhetoric shouldn't get out of control.

...even the leftist MSM will take notice of Obama’s incompetence.

A person who was demoralized is unable to assess true information. The facts tell nothing to him, even if I shower him with information, with authentic proof, with documents and pictures. ...he will refuse to believe it.... That's the tragedy of the situation of demoralization.

Even some of Obama’s supporters are starting to realize he is in way over his head and are no longer willing to toe the company line.

That does not play well, even the leftist MSM will take notice of Obama’s incompetence.

One hopes so, but I am not counting on it. I do hope the international community takes note, though.

“””U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron supported Egyptians’ demand for reform but stopped short of calling for President Hosni Mubarak to step down immediately. “I don’t think we in the West should be the ones to point fingers and say it’s this leader or that leader who has to go now or start now,” Mr. Cameron said. “We should say that we back countries that are putting in place the building blocks of civil society, and that’s exactly what we’re doing in Egypt.”””

Merkel and Cameron have rebuked Obama.

“We have great respect for Frank Wisner and we were deeply appreciative of his willingness to travel to Egypt last week. He has not continued in any official capacity following the trip. The views he expressed today are his own. He did not coordinate his comments with the U.S. government.”

Amb. Wisner had been sent to achieve an impossible goal. He was not likely surprised to be refused a second appointment by Mubarek.

Today, Amb Wisner protected his reputation.

Obama is still upside down on Egypt and is contrary to the position of every nation except Iran.

Obama currently poses an immediate risk for world peace and a threat to U.S. interests in the Arab world.

I have read pieces to that effect. But I also visit discussion groups where many lofty Europeans and Canadians, and lofty US libs can't praise his brillance high enough. These are topic related, viz., Antiques and Agriculture, my areas of interest, where politics are secondary. It is mind-numbing.

Wow, this is so funny it could pass for an April Fool’s posting. Obama has to be the biggest idiot to ever set foot inside the White House. It could not happen to a nicer guy.

“Today, Amb Wisner protected his reputation.”

You are certainly correct.
Of course, publically contradicting the “most powerful man in the world” on a global scale takes some guts.
Notwithstanding P.J.’s comments, Wisner’s principal in this instance, Hillary (and her faction), may have assured him of cover before he left on his assignment.

Yah, but—The One is watching the Super Bowl with Jennifer Lopez!

That’s what’s important.

We must keep our priorities straight.

Today, Amb Wisner protected his reputation.

Indeed. Wisner's father, Frank, Sr., ran the OSS in southern Europe during WWII. After the war, he was head of the Directorate of Plans.

The other day, Christiane Amanpour managed to interview Mubarak and his son (and also Vice President Suleiman). Mubarak said he was tired of public life after six decades and wanted to quit but couldn't right now, because the country would be plunged into chaos, and the the Muslim Brotherhood would end up in power. They also denied that Mubarak's son Gamal was slated to succeed his father as president.

This doesn’t fit the Muslim Brotherhood President’s script. He is very very angry.

I wish she’d confirm it a little louder.

Actually, I don’t think he’s clueless. He just has a different project - and it’s not favorable to the US.
